President Robin Smith had a surprise visit from District 5300 Governor Miles Petroff as she opened her next to the last meeting for the 2013-14 year. After our pledge, inspirational moment and song, she invited DG Miles, Past Dist. Gov. Roy York and Asst. Gov. Linda Bertuzzi to the front of the room to induct our newest member, Kevin Wool of First American Home Warranty, who was sponsored by AG Linda (her 4th new member this year). DG Miles & PDG Roy shared the importance of Rotary, both in the community and the world, and after which AG Linda presented Kevin with his membership pin and welcomed him as the newest Rotarian in the World. Welcome Kevin!

The 2014-15 Board was presented to the membership for vote and with no nominations from the floor, the new Board was approved:
President Teresa Sowers
President Elect Michael Woodfield
Treasurer Albert Guida Jr
Secretary Larry Goldstein
Past President Robin Smith

DG Miles presented the club with the RI Presidential Citation with Distinction - not the first one for our club, but the first one presented tfor 2013-14. This Citation was awarded for our club's outstanding work with children through the Back to Booker program, membership participation in club growth and activities, having a signature event, which is our Block Party, and support of the Rotary Foundation, including Polio Plus. Thanks to every member who made this award possible!

After our traditional birthday hum to DG Miles, we moved into cross-fines - to DG Miles for referring to PDG Roy as a "two-timer"; multiple to our newest member Kevin Wool; to Past Pres. Geoff for "man you need to shave!, which resulted in PDG Roy referring to him as scruffy; to Kevin Mills for sporting "great legs"; to PP Lane for his sincere whining about missing his wife while at the lake; and finally to Michael Woodfield for renting a member's home at the beach.

President Robin presented a short video on the long and eventful year our club has had in 2013-14, featuring Birthday Bashes, the Block Party, new member inductions, membership events, Summerlin Patriotic Parade, India NID, and the Mexico home build, just to name a few. Check out the video below:

June Birthday Bash

Thankfully we had a large group of Rotarians on hand for the large number of Agassi Boys and Girls Club kids who were all celebrating their June Birthdays.  Captained by Kevin & Priscilla Mills, the kids were treated to their favorite - Pizza, followed by gourmet cupcakes!  They were then were split into 3 teams to play a round of the Sticky Hand game refereed by Rotarians.  The noise level was over the top as they worked together to win prizes.   Everyone had a great time, even the big Rotarian kids, which included Rusty Bridges, Larry Goldstein, Kevin Wool, and Past Presidents Lane Kay, Duclinea Rongavilla & Linda Bertuzzi. Join us next month on July 16th.

Rotary in the News

A busy May for Rotary International didn't go unnoticed by the rest of the world. It's not all the time that Rotary's work is written about in the New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, and Bloomberg News, just to name a few. But that's exactly what happened last month. From our record-breaking bridge climb across the Sydney Harbour Bridge to the polio emergency in Pakistan, Rotary-related stories in global news outlets touched audiences around the world. This kind of attention wouldn't be possible without the dedication of Rotary members. So to commemorate these achievements, we used Flipboard to gather the news coverage. The result is a curated magazine that's easy to read on a tablet or mobile device. The magazine we've created also works on desktop computers. May's magazine also features the first graduating class of Rotary-supported scholars at the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, a quote from Pakistan PolioPlus Committee Chair Aziz Memon in Bloomberg News, and top stories from the Rotarian magazineThumb through last month's Rotary Flipboard magazine.
