With only three meetings remaining and the anticipation (or dread) of her upcoming debunking, President Robin Smith opened the meeting with our usual traditions of pledge, song and inspirational moment. After enjoying time for fellowship and our delicious meal, we were introduced to our guests:
Jim Otwell, Rotary Club of Forsyth County, Georgia
Rosalie Hedrick, Las Vegas Rotary Club
Ty Salazar, Las Vegas Rotary Club
Debbie Harris, Las Vegas Rotary Club
Keith West, guest of AG/PP Linda Bertuzzi
Kevin Wool, guest of AG/PP Linda Bertuzzi
Marie Mortera, Channel 3 and guest of Debbie Harris
Past Dist. Governor/Past President Roy York presented copies of books co-authored with the Kermit Booker Elementary 4th grade students to the club for the Las Vegas Fremont Rotary Reading Room at the Agassi B&G Club, along with books signed by all the kids to Past President Allen Puliz as a thank you for funding the program. A full set was also presented to the Booker library earlier in the day during the 5th grade graduation ceremony. PDG/PP Roy said the kids really enjoyed the book writing process and the teachers are looking forward to continuing the project next year.
AG/PP Linda presented Pres. Robin with a copy of the Booker Elementary year book, in which our club is prominently featured on numerous pages. Most notably was the Principal's Page with a photo of Principal Marcus Mason and Past Pres. Lane Kay showing off their now infamous turkey dance moves at Booker Thanksgiving.

- The Debunking to Put All Others to Shame - just a reminder that rsvp's are due asap to PP Lane for the debunking on Saturday, June 28th at the Kay residence. The details are still being concocted, but if you have an extra pool towel, please bring just in case we run low. Contact PP Lane for details.
- Agassi Birthday Bash - Kevin Mills is June's Bash captain and is looking for volunteers to help him at the party. Just a note, this will be the first stop before you head out to Spring Mountain Ranch the same day. Also, Kevin's daughter is looking for 2 or 3 summer projects her Faith Lutheran team of 28 girls could work on during the summer. Contact Kevin if you have some ideas.
Presidential Recognition went to Bonnie Helms for supporting the recent District Conference with a company ad and for also already completing meeting makeups during her Northern Nevada business trips.
Cross fines - To PP Lane for confirming he is the biggest turkey in the club; to PP Tabor for introducing PP Albert Guida to his first Cameroonian, after which PP Guida learned Cameroonians have the worst odds of winning the World Cup; and we had a few "selfies" this time - to PDG/PP Roy for his granddaughter's graduation from Cashman Middle School as Valedictorian and to PP Allen for current incubation of the 5th grandbaby.
As the Children's Free Clinic Website states "Dr. Noah Kohn might as well have a doctorate in doing good. Serving as Medical Director of The Children's Free Clinic of Southern Nevada, he has devoted himself entirely to helping children." After working in private pediatric practice for several years, he decided he needed to do more. With more than two dozen private practices in Summerlin, there were still countless children in Clark County with no options to turn to if they got sick. Knowing this, Dr. Kohn closed his practice and, with only himself and one assistant, opened the doors to serve all families, no matter ability to pay. He is currently serving 3,000 patients a year and spending quality time with each one. Many families don't return for follow-up care, however, with the new insurance laws and guidance on programs available, most do find financial assistance eventually. The annual cost to run his practice is $250,000 and his current funding is through private, corporate and non-profit donations - including Bank of Nevada and the Global Charity Foundation based in Las Vegas. Check out his website for more information.

League of Extraordinary Booker Students
by Asst. Gov/Past Pres. Linda Bertuzzi
On Tuesday, June 3, we honored the final three students for the League of Extraordinary Booker Students program at Kermit Booker Elementary's 5th grade graduation. The pilot program begun this year and funded by District 5300 Grant, was chaired by AG/PP Linda under the New Generations Committee. The criteria for the nomination by their teacher included citizenship, academics, attendance, completion of the anti-bullying program and mentoring. The honorees this period were Melvin Hernandez, Jasmine Escoto and Mya Jameson and when their teachers read the nomination, it was easy to understand why each student was selected. Comments included - "I have never seen a student try harder to learn.......she is a great role model for her classmates" "He is courteous kind and helpful.....always offers to help by being a support system to students who may be intimidated by subject matter" "She isn't satisfied until her assignments are perfect.....she is focused on success and will same day make a fantastic business owner". With the announcement of each name, their fellow classmates erupted in loud applause and cheers, and the parents in the audience were beaming with pride. Each of the students received their Booker/Rotary polo shirt, a specially selected gift just for them and a certificate inducting them into the League of Extraordinary Booker Students. And when the program was over, AG/PP Linda was presented with a bouquet of roses from the first recipient of the award, Christian Flint, as a thank you for the time our members spent with the kids in the classrooms and the new program! Thanks to the members who were able to lend a hand - Pres. Robin, PDG/PP Roy York, Bonnie Helms, Butch Benda and soon-to-be inducted Keith West.

2014 Rotary Convention in Australia
RI President Ron Burton put the final touches on the 2014 Rotary Convention in Sydney by reminding the attendees why they joined Rotary. "Being a Rotarian isn't about our own achievements, it isn't about our own careers, it really isn't about us at all. It's about the people we help," said Burton. "At the end of the day, the only thing that matters in Rotary is how much better the world becomes because Rotary is in it." The four-day event, which drew to a close on 4 June, attracted more than 18,000 attendees from 153 countries. Burton encouraged convention goers to return to their clubs ready to do more to improve the lives of others. "Together, we can dream big and we can achieve. We can change whole communities for the better, not for a day but for a lifetime," he said. Rotary changes lives by improving literacy, making water cleaner, bringing better health care to mothers and children, and eradicating polio worldwide, Burton said. But he warned that complacency could set Rotary back. "That's why it isn't enough for any of us to just go through the motions, to show up at our clubs, to do just the minimum needed and no more," he added. "And it's why each of us has to remember, every hour of every day, what a responsibility we have." Check out the pictures and other amazing stories here.
Next year's Convention will be in Sao Paulo!
