Before we get down to the business of Rotary each week, it's great to have 10 or 15 minutes to mingle and greet guests before the ringing of the bell by President Robin Smith. Our venue seems to be just right for many out of town guests, some visiting for the first time and some returning over and over. We enjoyed several guests and visiting Rotarians this past week, including a few members of the Las Vegas Club, a trend we are starting to see more of each week!
Past President Ron Paull, Quesnel BC Rotary Club, Canada
Rosalee Hedrick, Las Vegas Club
Ty Salazar, Las Vegas Club
Rusty Bridges of Pop Culture Graphics, guest of Michael Woodfield and Block Party auction donor
Shawn Kish, guest of Michael Woodfield
Jan Neave, guest of Michael Woodfield
Pres. Robin presented a travelling gift to President Elect Teresa Sowers - a nut cracker, the perfect gift to symbolize our "nutty" club! Past President Scott Stolberg received a round of applause for hosting the March Birthday Bash at the Agassi Boys and Girls Club and then received what he claimed was "the best birthday hum ever" for his birthday. For those of you who don't know, we have absolutely no singing talent and opt to hum whenever possible.
Announcements
Super Build- Pres. Robin reminded everyone of the upcoming Super Build on May 3rd near Tecate, Mexico. Be certain to register at www.corazon.org under build # 00011285, which is the Southern Nevada funded home.
District Assembly - President Elect Teresa Sowers is urging members at large, along with current and incoming Board members to attend District Assembly on Saturday, April 5th, in Victorville. It promises not to be the "same old stuff" this year. There will be great new information and ideas for the 2014-15 Rotary year. Registration is a must to guarantee food and materials for all attendees - www.DaCdb.com
Golf Tourney - Ty Salazar announced the Las Vegas Club's golf tourney on Friday, May 30th at the Badlands Golf Course. There will be something very everyone this year. If you aren't a golfer, you can enjoy the wine tasting. Contact Ty for tickets or more information.
Polio Pig - Funds raised this week, which would normally go to the Polio Plus program, will be donated to ALS Nevada in memory of Rotarian Bob Lillis of the North Las Vegas Club. Bob was a active member in the community and a good friend of our club.
Not a lot of cross-fines to report - but a couple were noteworthy. From Pres. Robin to John McInerney for coming back to life after his execution at the Mob Museum last week and from Past Pres. Laura Fitzpatrick to AG/PP Linda Bertuzzi for her contribution to ending Polio in India.
Our program featured former Rotary Exchange Student Casey Quinn of the law office of Newmeyer & Dillion, LLP. It was a very informational presentation on the Nevada Creation of a State Intermediate Appellate Court, SJR 14 on the November ballot. The measure will ask voters whether or not to amend the Nevada Constitution in order to create an Intermediate Appellate Court, also known as a court of appeals. This measure was narrowly defeated in 2010 by only 53%. Currently the Nevada Supreme Court handles all appeals, big or small, and has the highest case load in the United States, with an ongoing case load of nearly 2,000. The current burden on the Supreme Court prevents them from publishing opinions on case decisions due to the massive research and writings required for each decision. The majority of cases are decided by order, which means they are unpublished and, therefore, provide no legal opinion for future cases. Nevada Supreme Court Justice Hardesty believes we must have published opinions to compete with Delaware, for instance, in order for businesses have an incentive to move to Nevada. If SJR 14 passes, it is anticipated that it will allow appeals to be more efficiently managed, increase the number of published decisions, ensure appeals are rendered in a timely manner, and will be operated a minimal fiscal impact to the State. The new members of the judicial process would be housed in current Justice Centers.

Committee Reports
League of Extraordinary Booker Students
LV Fremont was successful in obtaining a grant from District 5300 to fund our first ever League of Extraordinary Booker Students this year. The program, designed to foster citizenship, academic achievement and attendance, includes recognition each trimester of the top fifth grader in each of the three classes at Kermit R Booker Elementary School. The recipients receive a certificate from our club recognizing their achievements, a gift personalized just for them (i.e. puzzles, art supplies, roller skates or tennis shoes), a custom polo shirt personalized with the League and Rotary logo, and a VIP lunch at one of our Tuesday meetings. In addition, we complete a hands-on mini etiquette classes with each fifth grade class. We returned this past week with the emphasis on the importance of gratitude and handwritten thank you cards, educating them on the when's and how's to complete their thank you cards, which generated a lot of discussion with the kids. Their assignment before our class ended was to write a thank you to an adult, someone they could give the card to at the end of the day. Every student busily wrote out their special note, and many asked for more cards to write another. We are learning the kids are hungry for guidance as they are preparing to move into middle school and LV Fremont Rotary is very proud to be a part of their transition. Our next class will be on the importance of proper dress. A special thanks to Colleen Malany Braid and AG/PP Linda for their time at Booker for this important program.
