Our weekly meeting was opened by President Robin Smith with a note of thanks to the missing meeting captain Steve Reiter for rounding up his team who, despite our dismal song performance (thank for your faith in us Drizzle Gibson), pulled off the meeting duties without a hitch. After a little time for fellowship and food, we welcomed our visitors:

Rotarian Rob Telles of the Las Vegas Club

Albert Rodriguez, guest of Rob Telles
Kevin Mills, guest of Past President Jim Main
Chris Rigler, guest of Greg Clemens

Steven Gibson was invited to the front of the room and presented with an "Ignite" Rotary pin for his sponsorship of new member Joe Parnello, who was inducted the previous week. The Polio Pig continues to be circulated each week to raise dollars and remind each of us the importance of continuing to fund the Polio Plus campaign. With recent outbreaks in formerly Polio-free countries in Africa, we cannot let up on the funding or efforts to eradicate every last child against Polio. We are THIS close!

President Robin extended thanks to all the members who were, along with her, in attendance at numerous Rotary programs over the previous weekend, including her beau Don, Past Dist. Gov./Past Pres. Roy York and wife Kathy, Past Pres. Roger Tabor, Asst. Gov./Past Pres. Linda Bertuzzi who attended the Southern Nevada Luau Friday night; Steve & Drizzle Gibson, AG/PP Linda who received the latest Rotary news at District Training on Saturday and to Club partiers Colleen Malany Braid and AG/PP Linda who joined Pres. Robin at Green Valley Rotary's 21st birthday party at Lake Las Vegas on Saturday evening. You will notice there are no photos, which is probably a good thing!

Special reminders went out for the JDRF Rock the Walk event on Friday the 20th - tickets will not be available at the door. The Judges are coming! Take an opportunity to meet our latest Open World judges who will be treated to an informal dinner at the home of Past Pres. Allen and Patty Puliz on Sunday September 29th, 6:00 PM. Lastly, if you are interested in volunteering at Three Square on September 25th, contact Rob Goldstein to sign up - you'll be glad you did.

It was a little challenging to keep up with the cross-fines, but here goes - to AG/PP Linda for this year's Platinum Sponsor Nova Home Loans once again committing to be a Platinum Sponsor for the 2013-14 Block Party, to Pres. Robin for temporarily missing in action after her flat tire on the way to Rotary, to the Saturday night partying ladies for hexing the Central Michigan Chippewas, causing the Rebel's win, to PP Roger for attending the US vs. Mexico soccer game which the US won, to Drizzle for her attempt at fine "tuning" our poor musical skills, to Steve Gibson for using large and complex words during cross-fines; to PP Linda for "sauntering" into a classroom during Foundation training after it had started (big word usage Steve!) and finally to Past Pres. Scott Stolberg for still being a fan of the Big 10, when the Pac 12 is so much better.

City Councilman Bob Coffin was our featured speaker and brought us up to date on his views of the happenings in our community. Touching on the topic of real estate, he felt that values are continuing to recover in our real estate market, but thankfully not at the previous bubble strength. Downtown Las Vegas has been a key piece in keeping our City alive. With Zappos now a downtown fixture, young people between 18- 40 are steadily relocating to the area. There have been some "close calls" recently and the City is going to begin to enforce the curfew for the under 18 group for their safety. First Friday continues to draw thousands downtown and the attendees move from the Art District to Fremont Street after First Friday closes - which generates more revenue, encouraging more business development. Councilman Coffin touched on the controversial County Commissioner's request to "borrow" $30,000,000 from a sales tax funded reserve account that had been set up to fund Metro's police hires over an estimated 25 year period. He stated that if these funds are taken and the previously approved sales tax increase is not retained, Metro will be, at best, only able to sustain their current force. This caused a lively interaction with a few members who noted that there needs to be discussion about fixing "systemic union policies and excessive contracts, which encourage early retirement, taking experienced officers off the street" which may fuel the errors by the inexperienced law enforcement officers. And we were left with this one last thought...... "When you have County Commissioners telling the City how much money they can have for police services, the system is unbalanced and doesn't favor the protection of the citizens of Las Vegas."

March to End Polio

polio donate buttonSouthern Nevada Rotary Clubs are being asked to coordinate a fundraising walk, stroll, or a march to end Polio on Saturday, October 19th.  Select a place that identifies your club in your community, gather up members, friends, family & business partners...........and step out to raise awareness of Rotary's mission to eradicate Polio.  Take an hour or so to raise money to eradicate the last 1% of Polio. Due to the Horn of Africa outbreak, the bulk of polio cases this year (over two-thirds) are in countries which were previously polio-free. In endemic countries, cases are down 40% over the same period last year, indicating progress particularly in Afghanistan & Nigera.  At the end of August, 2013, the number of new Polio cases reported is higher than all of 2012.  We cannot stop until the virus is wiped out!   End Polio Now

And then end this momentous event in California with all of District 5300 the following weekend.  Be a part of history!  Be a part of the cure!
