Fremont Street

 Greetings!

President Lane Kay called one of our most anticipated meetings of the year to order as we welcomed a room brimming with foreign and local dignitaries who were present as part of the Open World, Rule of Law Program. On hand were Senator Richard H. Bryan, Senior U.S. District Court Judge Lloyd D. George, his Administrative Assistant Lee Hughes, and the Estonian delegation comprised of Kaija Kaijanen, Kai Kullerkupp, Pavel Gontsarov and Taavi Pern.  Also joining us were Steve Gibson, guest of Bernice Davidson, Shawn Dybdal, owner of DROPSHADE and one of our live auction donors, Patrick Breen, guest of John McInerney, and Michael Gordon of the Las Vegas Club.

President Lane reminded everyone (although none of us needed it) of the 3rd Annual Block party on Friday, April 26th and to remember to be there by 4:00 for setup.  Other important dates included the Easter Seals cleanup as part of Rotary at Work Day on May 4th.  Bring gardening tools, gloves, and trash bags and be ready to enjoy a one of our annual hands-on projects.  The 2013-14 Board Retreat will be held on May 9th at Sedona - all incoming Board members and committee members are requested to attend and all members are large are welcome, as well.  Additional dates and reminders are below in the "Save the Date" block.

The Smith Sisters, chairs of the Block Party, presented the committee members with Rotary heart pins as an expression of their gratitude for all the hours and hard work that went into pulling the Block Party together.  The same pins were also presented to four Estonian guests.

2013 LV Fremont judges dinner

Presidential recognitions were given to Past Pres. Allen Puliz (04-05/06-07) and his wife Patti for hosting our Club's welcome dinner at their home for our Estonian guests and to Rob Goldstein for being recognized in a recent publication as the "most neutral arbitrator".

Cross fines were, as usual, varied and fun!  To Secretary Teresa Sowers whose name was pronounced correctly on the radio, while Marilene Nevins' name be unrecognizable (but we knew it was you Marilene!), to Butch Benda for offering his wife Michelle in place of Past Pres. Roger Tabor (02-03) to attend the Dancing With the Stars show with Amy, to the Smith Sisters for scheduling the Block Party meeting the same day as the Agassi Birthday Bash, to PP Puliz for reminding PP Tabor of a hot Prime Rib dinner waiting as he was pulling into a fast food drive-thru, to Asst. Gov Linda Bertuzzi for not defending the Las Vegas Club's status as the Best Club in the Galaxy, to Teresa  and PP Puliz for delivering a personal Bundtini to AG/PP Linda at the Block Party meeting and then to PP Puliz for not delivering the same to the Smith Sisters, and finally, to Hector Buendia for his son becoming a fine young man, in spite of Hector.

Judge Lloyd D. George has hosted delegates from Eurasia as part of the 2013 Judges visit with George Open World, Rule of Law program since the program's inception in 1999. Shortly thereafter, a partnership was formed with the LV Fremont Rotary Club to act as the "Host", participating and assisting in the coordination of activities before and during the exchange, as well as administrating the program's grant.  In 2008, the committee was further expanded to include "Rotary Clubs of Southern Nevada", with the grant administered by the Las Vegas Club.  Today there are more than 100 Southern Nevada Rotarians who participate in the Open World program, as well as the incredible committee members working with Judge George.  Starting early each morning, the delegation is shuttled to various Las Vegas landmarks, businesses, courthouses, Rotary luncheons, and dinners - ending very late in the evening.  They spend a great 2013 judges with Roy amount of one-on-one time with local attorneys and judges and view actual court cases in progress. Our group this year was comprised of three judges and one prosecutor.  The team members were fluent in English and shared with us what a great honor they felt to be not only a part of this program, but to share their experience with the wonderful members of Rotary.  Pavil told us that there is not much in the way of community connections or involvement in Estonia, but by the end of the week, each of the team members promised to seek out a Rotary Club in their area and give back in thanks for their extraordinary experience in the United States.  A note of special gratitude to Past Dist. Gov./Past Pres. Roy York (95-96/09-10) for co-chairing this program, and to our Club's drivers,  PDG/PP Roy, PP Allen Puliz, PP Geoff Holmes & Colleen Malany Braid, who spent countless hours chauffeuring our guests around Las Vegas.

District 5300 Super Build

When President Elect Elect Ray Jansma was asked to share his impressions of his first Super Build, he explained that it was really an experience he hadn't expected.  "The project was so much more organized than I thought it would be!"  He said the project was exhausting, but fulfilling in the end when the keys were presented to the very deserving homeowners.  For the first time, each home now has a functional private toilet, primitive by most means, but more than the new homeowner's had before.  The home also has 3 rooms, with a loft, a small kitchen counter, water purification system and securing windows and doors - at a total cost of $8,400.  Thanks to all the LV Fremont team members who traveled to Mexico to make this home a reality for the family - International Chair Steve ReiterPres. Elect Robin Smith & brother Robert, Past Pres. Albert Guida Jr. (94-95) & daughter Austin, and Pres. Elect Elect Ray & wife Debbie

Forbes Magazine and Rotary

In the April 25, 2013 edition of Forbes Magazine is a fantastic article about Rotary, from Salt Lake City Rotary member Devin Thorpe's perspective. What is Rotary International? Your Local Rotary Club Is Doing More Than You Think is well written and really speaks to the heart of what Rotary is at the club level.  It is a great piece to print, or save as PDF, and share with anyone you may want to invite to Rotary.  You can follow this link to Forbes Article.
