Greetings!
Another terrific Las Vegas Fremont Rotary Club meeting was called to order by President Lane who, seven months into his leadership year, still shares his enthusiasm to ignite our members and guests each week. Las Vegas Club President Randy Donald and member Bob Patton joined us along with returning visitors Diane Griffin of Prince Edward Island Rotary and Past Pres. Roger Tabor's (02-03) guest Kevin Hemonowski.
A Presidential recognition was given to all members who were instrumental in the successful sales of our Big Game board squares, which netted $5,000 to our Foundation. Special recognition went to PDG/Past Pres. Roy York (95-96/09-10) who sold an entire board of 100 squares and to Pres. Elect Robin Smith and her beau, Don Barris, who sold nearly 2 full boards. PP Roger was recognized for his induction as an official "Legend" with the Las Vegas Legends Indoor Soccer Team, and that credit was promptly cancelled out for leaving the game early to attend a Gangnam Style contest with bride Amy - and no pictures! Roger Bishop received an "Ignite" pin for his introduction of new member Bernice Davidson to our club.
In honor of our club's 27th anniversary, our founding Godfathers and charter members Past Pres. Al Guida, Jr. (94-95), Past Pres. Jim Main (87-88) and Past Pres. Gary Prater (88-89) were given a special moment of appreciation for their long-time service to our great club with the presentation of walkers & canes, followed by a very robust standing ovation from the members. Thanks Al, Gary & Jim for all the support you have provided over the years!
Cross-fines went to Teresa Sowers for covering PP Roger's role as meeting captain, to PP Gary for impersonating the greeter and multiple fines to Michael Woodfield for failing to greet and pass out the badges, to PP Roger for not answering a text and for his Legends induction. Finally, from PE Robin a cross-fine to all members who helped sell squares which she matched.
RCG Economics provides multi-disciplinary capability in regional economics, forecasting and market trend analysis, real estate market research, public policy issues, economic development, as well as hospitality and gaming industry analysis, bringing a unique perspective to these issues. John Restrepo, Principal of RCG, was on hand to provide us with the status of the Nevada economy. He said Nevada is still lagging in the job market as compared to the US as a whole. We haven't diversified our industries enough, with over 30% of our labor force in the casino & hospitality industry. Nevada "took a bigger hit on weekly wages as compared to the US", but, on the plus side, that has provided for a more affordable and competitive workforce. Leisure and hospitality is showing improvement in the operating environment, with healthy increases in average daily room rates. Tourism-related project activity is healthy and several new projects are in the works. New housing market has improved and stabilized over the last nine months, fueled by investors & cash buyers. The commercial market seems to have hit bottom and is beginning to stabilize. The anchored retail market is the most improved due to improving taxable retail sales. He left us with this thought - What are Nevada's assets? The human asset, comprised of forward thinking, entrepreneurial people who continue to reinvent themselves. Survivors. It is the human power and brain power that will ultimately create our recovery.
SPECIAL NOTE - Next week's meeting is a special "Past President's Day", when anything can happen and we will hear from our past presidents about our Club's history. Bring a guest!

Committee Reports
3rd Annual Block Party
Our Block Party committee is working hard to bring together another great event on Friday, April 26th. The success of this event relies solely on every member bringing in a sponsor, donations and being an important part of the planning. If you have currently been serving on the committee, duplicate yourself and bring another member to help. PE Robin had an opportunity to announce our party at a recent Southern Nevada President's Circle meeting, and everyone at the meeting who had attended in the past said they had a fabulous time and encouraged others to attend. The word is out there - let's support the hard work of the committee. There is a possibility of another Platinum sponsor, along with a Gold (or two). Please, when asked, say yes to whatever help is needed. Contact PE Robin at 702-460-5080 or Co-Chair Carla at 702-281-8593 to volunteer. And, just a reminder, the proceeds this year will go to our Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House. |
