Greetings!
The seats were filled and the energy high for our January 22nd meeting! President Lane presented Pres. Elect Robin Smith with her "brownie" for points earned when she turned in her meeting team list early. Las Vegas Rotary Club Rotarians were our special guests of the day - Debbie Harris, Richard Reed and Russell Swain
Debbie Harris invited our members to attend the Las Vegas Club's 2nd Annual Valentine Gala being held on February 9th at the Renaissance Hotel. Tickets are $150 each and proceeds will benefit the club's Foundation and Shade Tree. See calendar below to purchase tickets.
Past Pres. Allen Puliz (04-05/06-07) counted the contents of our Polio Pig and announced we had collected $459.30 for the Polio Plus campaign. The winner with the closest guess was Russ Swain and his $20 winnings were placed back into the pig. Thanks Russ!
Teresa Sowers collected the Big Game Boards to be passed along to the next team for sales. Thus far, we have made some great progress and the squares are filling quickly. We will be drawing the teams and numbers on Thursday, January 31st at our membership mixer.
International Chair Steve Reiter asked for more assistance with housing and transportation of the Columbian and Dominican soccer teams arriving for The Mayor's Cup in February. All teams hosted by Rotarians will be playing at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Park.
PE Robin updated the Club on tickets and sales for our 3rd Annual Block Party and passed out additional information for sponsorships. President Lane presented Asst. Gov/Past Pres. Linda Bertuzzi (10-11) with a special Rotary pin for securing Nova Home Loans as our event's Platinum Sponsor ($5,000) and also to Membership Chair Mike Woodfield for bringing in Bank of Nevada as a table sponsor ($500).
Past Pres. Dulcinea Almazan pinned President Lane with his official president's pin after announcing "We've decided to keep you!" Full membership badges were presented to Teresa Sowers and Roger Bishop for their extraordinary service to the club since their induction.
Our meeting was open for member craft talks and we heard from two of our newest. Mike Smith, Business Banker for Wells Fargo, shared with us his nearly 30 year history within Rotary, which began with "a mystery invitation to lunch". He liked what he experienced and decided to join. His recent relocation from Arizona to Las Vegas found him searching for another Rotary "home" and a visit to our club left no doubt that it was the right fit for him. He is married to a twin, father of 3 and grandfather of 6. Larry Goldstein (pronounced "stein" like the beer stein) is from Philadelphia and owns Rapid Refill. He had been considering Rotary membership for some time and was "called to action" after sitting next to Mike Woodfield at a Boys and Girls Club event. Larry made several visits to our club, and like Mike Smith, decided the Downtown Club was perfect for him. He is single and a father of two daughters.
We closed the meeting with our traditional $1.00 cross-fines - multiple to PP Al Guida for organizing meetings and not providing the correct address, to Ray Jansma for not wearing his Rotary pin at a social event, to Teresa Sowers for "ragging" on Ray for no Rotary pin, to Hector Buendia for being present, from Past Pres. Geoff Holmes (03-04) to "both Texans" for a snow thunderstorm while he was in Dallas, and self-fine to Carla Smith for struggling with a first grade quiz. And, we are down to 8 cards for the weekly drawing - you can't win if you don't attend and buy tickets!

Las Vegas Legends Membership Mixer
Our first membership mixer of the year will be held January 31, 2013 at The Orleans. We will be meeting at 5:00 inside TGIFridays to draw the numbers and names for the "Big Game" boards and then enjoy an hour or so of fun, drink and food before we head off to watch our local Las Vegas Legends Indoor Soccer Team take on the Dallas Sidekicks at 7:00. This is a family affair, so bring your spouse/partner and children - also, consider bringing a prospective member to enjoy an evening with the greatest group of Rotarians in the Universe! Wear your Rotarian at Work shirt and let folks see who we are. |

Rotary International's innovative campaign to develop the World's Biggest Commercial to raise public awareness about polio eradication has struck a chord with the largest pharmaceutical trade group in the United States, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). It's donating US $50,000 to Rotary's PolioPlus program to spur participation in the commercial, which can provide oral vaccine to protect more than 83,000 children against this paralyzing disease. Participants in the World's Biggest Commercial simply upload photos of themselves making the "this close" gesture with their fingers -- as in, "We are this close to ending polio" -- to the ever-expanding promotional spot at Rotary's End Polio Now website. In doing so, they'll rub "virtual shoulders" with such celebrities and notables as Bill Gates, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Jane Goodall, Amanda Peet, Jack Nicklaus, Jackie Chan, PSY and other high-profile Rotary Ambassadors for Polio Eradication. Since launching the campaign on World Polio Day, 24 October, more than 4,500 people in more than 116 countries have joined the online initiative by adding their names and photos to the World's Biggest Commercial. Beginning 1 February, highlights from the World's Biggest Commercial will air in Times Square, New York City, one of the world's busiest locations.
In addition to helping Rotary set a new Guinness World Record, every person who joins the commercial can choose to add their name to a petition urging the world's governments to provide the $5.5 billion needed to finish the job and end polio forever. Share your support through social media and ask your friends and family to join the World's Biggest Commercial as well! Upload your photo . We are "this close." Let's end polio now. |
