Greetings!

President Lane opened our first meeting of the year with the ringing of the bell and guided us through the pledge, inspirational moment and song.  We welcomed guests Bob Lillis of the North Las Vegas Rotary Club, Kim Woodfield, wife of Membership Chair Mike Woodfield, Bernice Davidson and Cameron Christianson. President Lane inducted our first new members of the year - Mike Smith who is a long-time 2013 induct Goldstein and Smith Rotarian transferring from Arizona and Larry Goldstein, sponsored by Mike Woodfield. Please extend a warm Las Vegas Fremont Rotary welcome to each of our new members and make them feel at home! Bob Lillis announced his Club's upcoming diamond necklace raffle with tickets for sale at $25 each or 5 for $100. The Big Game boards, another fundraiser for our Foundation, are ready and will start making the rounds to various clubs and businesses - squares are $20 each. The Polio Pig will be "slayed" next week with the dollars being sent to Rotary's Polio Plus campaign (see Time article below about Rotary's efforts). Before we open the pig, members will be allowed to guess the total dollars to win an undetermined prize. International Chair Steve Reiter passed out information on the upcoming Super Build in Corazon on Saturday April 13 and asked for volunteers. Our Foundation has donated $500 towards this project and several of our members have gone each year to build a home for a deserving family. President Lane asked for everyone to sign up for the JDRF/LV Fremont Rotary soccer event being held on January 13, starting at noon, at the Indoor Soccer Field on N. Rampart. Our Club is a co-sponsor and providing the food & beverages. This is another great opportunity to unite in support of our community's youth, especially the JDRF which is near and dear to President Lane. The final piece of business was the presentation of the Board-approved slate of officers for 2013-14 to the membership. With no nominations from the floor, the new slate was unanimously passed. Congratulations to our new officers:

Stephanie May provided the Club with history of the Shriners Hospital and information about the upcoming golf tourney. Shriners began in the 1800's with a group of Masons who came together as "brothers" to help those in need in their communities. The first hospital was built in 1922 in Louisiana with emphasis on pediatric orthopedic care. Today it is a network of 22 not-for-profit hospitals across the US devoted to a vast range of pediatric medical needs and cares for children until they reach age 21 without regard to their financial situation. The Shriners organization pays for all transportation of the family members to be near their child during treatments. Currently Las Vegas does not have a dedicated Shriners facility, but three of our local hospitals participate in the program. Since Shriners arrived in Las Vegas, more than 5,000 children have received care and 400 are currently in their care. The 2013 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open will be held again in Las Vegas from October 14-20th at TPC. There are many opportunities to serve as a volunteer for this event, from parking to crowd control. Please go to their website for more information -Shriners Open .

2013 Block Party

Rotary WheelThe Smith Sisters and an awesome team of volunteers are rounding up another incredible Las Vegas Fremont Rotary Club Block Party to be held on Friday, April 26, 2013.  Being held in the heart of Fremont Street, center stage, we will once again dance to the live music of The Wedge Brothers while enjoying dinner, drinks and live/silent auctions.  This year's fundraiser will benefit the Las Vegas Fremont Rotary Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House Charities Greater Las Vegas. All of the sub-committees have been busy fine-tuning this event and the committee will need EVERYONE's help to make it a success.  Please solicit businesses to be sponsors and/or donate items for our auction.  It promises to be yet another outstanding party!  You can contact Robin or Carla to find out where you are needed most.

Rotary, Polio & TIME Magazine

Time MagazineThe fight against polio is on the cover of this week's TIME Magazine. Read about the progress in fighting polio and Rotary's role in eradicating this crippling disease. "Thanks to aggressive global vaccination programs led by Rotary International, UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, and, most recently, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the year just beginning could be the disease's last." This article appears at a perfect time as thousands of Rotarians and people from around the world are preparing to participate in India's next National Immunization Day (NID) on February 24th. This is an extraordinary time in our history when we are "this close"  to seeing a 3500 year-old disease wiped off the face of the planet. Remember to keep supporting this cause. The last 1% will be the toughest to complete as we strive to immunize children in areas of the world that are involved in civil wars &  terrorism.
