Greetings!
President Lane Kay rang the bell and called our meeting to order last Tuesday - well, at least as much "order" as was possible! We were happy to welcome Rotarian Glenn Bailey back from Binger, Oklahoma, for his annual trip to Las Vegas and Roger Bishop's guest, Bernice Davidson. Asst. Gov./Past Pres. Linda Bertuzzi (10-11) was called forward at the start of the meeting and surprised with the presentation of her 4th Paul Harris Fellow which was pinned another Paul Harris Fellow, her daughter Sarah Tavernetti. Secretary Teresa Sowers announced the "Big Game" Boards will be ready to start filling right after the beginning of the year and President Elect Robin Smith announced a Block Party planning meeting will be held Tuesday, December 18, 11:00 am inside Hugo's Cellar. Past Pres. Allen Puliz (04-05/06-07) was congratulated on his 10 year anniversary in Rotary and our Club's traditional birthday hum (since we can't sing) was delivered with gusto to our December birthdays. Presidential Recognitions went to Colleen Braid, Past Pres. Paul Bell (98-99), AG/PP Linda, PE Robin and President Lane for supporting the recent Santa Clothes event and a special note of thanks to Debbie Jansma for also being on hand to shop. PP Paul was "recognized" for his upcoming position of Commercial Marketing Group President and Past Pres. Roger Tabor (02-03) for his "fine" NFR picture on facebook without his Rotary pin. And, while not a member of our Club, guest speaker Curtis Cummings was recognized for the birth of his first granddaughter who arrived during our meeting - she was 7 lbs, 7 oz and named Mackenzie. Congratulations Curtis! Cross-fines were generous - to all the members not sporting their Rotary pin, to Past Dist. Gov./Past Pres. Roy York (95-96/09-11) for finally completing PP Roger's back yard, to PE Robin for calling a committee meeting and not showing up, to PP Paul for his Dallas Cowboys conversation and to Teresa for "trashing" the same Cowboys, to Rob Goldstein for his unsportsmanlike conduct at a recent golf outing, to President Lane and PDG/PP Roy for their festive Holiday ties, to Colleen for committing to the upcoming India NID trip, and a self-fine from proud dad/President Lane for his son's recent basketball prowess at Faith Lutheran, which earned him starting positions in their next games.
Curtis Cummings has enjoyed a long journey in commercial construction in Las Vegas- from his start at 19 working with roofing materials to his current position of CEO Alan Jeskey Builders. He enlightened us on the transformation of commercial construction through the years and said due to the lack of adequate records filed on various projects in the early days of Las Vegas' growth, future renovation and construction have run into a multitude of issues such as unknown water or gas lines being breached and requiring many man hours and days to repair, holding up the new projects. He shared the stories the large equipment deliveries, which have to be accomplished in some very creative ways - from "cutting it up to bring it up or down the building", crane delivery, or even helicoptering in. He said the "politics of construction" have changed a great deal over the years and there is more red tape than ever arrive at the completion of a property now.

Newtown, CT Tragedy
December is designated as Family Month throughout the world of Rotary and is an opportunity to reflect on all who are precious to you. As you reflect on your own treasures of family and friends this month, and in the days and months going forward, please continue to hold the families in Newtown, Connecticut in your prayers. The Newtown Rotary Club has set up a Foundation dedicated to the surviving victims of the Sandy Hook School tragedy to help support their short and long term needs.
