Greetings!
Another great Tuesday gathering at the Las Vegas Fremont Rotary Club! We welcomed multiple visitors - Patrick & Sam Barney of the Springfield Rotary Club in Virginia, Russell Swain of the LV Club, as well former California Rotarian Harry Jackson, his business partner Shannon Sweeney, and Ken Swanson, all guests of PP Roger Tabor (02-03). A recap of District Conference was given by PP Linda Bertuzzi and Robin Smith, which resulted in a generous Presidential Recognition by President Dulcinea. PP Scott Stolberg (07-08) presented the menu for the debunking on June 23 and reminded everyone to RSVP. Cross-fines went to PP Linda for being absent when President Dulcinea announced her engagement - CONGRATULATIONS DULCINEA! - to PE Lane Kay for his 30th wedding anniversary and to PP Scott for not clarifying the hotdogs would be Kosher at the debunking.
Kermit Booker Elementary Principal Marcus Mason, School Psychologist and advisor for "My Booker's Keeper" Tony West, Jr., along with fifth graders Angel, "R" and Samantha, joined our meeting to give a report on how some of the funds have been used from our Kid Connection event, which were presented to the school in November, 2011. Each student read their thank you to Club for making the anti-bullying campaign "My Booker's Keeper" a reality. They are learning tolerance, respect and how to face problems through the program, as well as a better understanding of bullies and how to avoid becoming one. Having the program has given every Booker student a feeling of family and knowledge they are safe in discussing any issues with their teachers and counselors. It is very gratifying to hear what an incredible impact we are having on our Las Vegas children.
Andy Bischel, Director of Development of the animal foundation shared two startling facts, 1) more than 45,000 animals were turned in last year just to their facility, and with only 10,000 being adopted, tens of thousands had to be euthanized, and 2) one unaltered cat and kittens can result in over 370,000 new cats in only 7 years. Spaying/neutering and micro-chipping every pet is critical to stopping the explosion of unclaimed pets at the shelters. "It is a common myth that pet overpopulation means there are not enough homes for all the shelter animals. In reality" it is because more than 85% of LV families choose to adopt from breeders, pet stores and website services. He asked us to consider adoption by bringing our current family pet in to meet the potential new family pet to ensure harmony continues in the home. Other opportunities to help at the shelter include foster care and volunteering at various events help throughout the year. You can learn more about the foundation by calling 702-384-3333 or visit on-line at the animal foundation. |

District Conference 2012
As the song goes - These boots were made for walking and that's just what we did, as we walked away with 8 Outstanding and Exemplary Club awards at the 2012 District 5300 Conference! The Awards were proudly claimed by LV Fremont representatives PP Linda Bertuzzi (10-11) and President-Elect-Elect Robin Smith for Membership Development & Retention, Club Administration, International Projects, Rotary Foundation, Youth and Community Projects, Website, Public Relations, and Club Newsletter. Every accolade bestowed upon our Club was the result of the outstanding dedication of each and every member and Club supporters - thank you! The 3-day event was filled with presentations by various 5300 Clubs showcasing their events, fundraisers and programs, as well as a good ol' fashioned backyard BBQ and some late night fellowship at the hospitality suites. We enjoyed our time visiting with dignitaries, including RI International President's Representative PDG Raju Subramanian and his wife Vidhya, of Mumbai, India. PP Linda was honored to emcee on Saturday, dedicating the luncheon to 25 years of Rotarian Women and acknowledging every woman who has served Rotary as a wife/partner, mother, daughter, niece, sister or granddaughter since the founding of Rotary in 1905. Thank you to Robin Smith, PP Diane Cabral of the Summerlin Club, Debbie Harris of the LV Club and Marta Golding-Brown of the Lancaster Club who provided inspiration and song. PP Linda also presented her Polio Plus video from the recent NID trip to India alongside the other District 5300 Dream Team members, which resulted in several audience members committing to be a part of the 2013 trip. As for the remainder of the weekend, to plagiarize a famous saying -"what happened in Lake Arrowhead, stayed in Lake Arrowhead"! Next year we will be in beautiful San Diego. Stay tuned for details. |

Hermosillo Wheel Chair Project
The District International Project this year has come to fruition with over $75,000 in contributions from our Rotary Clubs in District 5300. This has resulted in a matching grant whereby we will have 3 containers to be delivered to Mexico this year. This "hands on" project has been confirmed and we have partnered with the Rotary Clubs of Hermosillo, MX to distribute 2 containers (over 500 wheelchairs) in their surrounding communities. We are to arrive Wednesday, June 13 with 2 nights in Hermosillo then travel to San Carlos for 2 additional nights. The local clubs are providing all ground transportation. We have been working on travel arrangements and have blocked flights out of LAX and LAS (Las Vegas will have open fare flights) with terrific group rates at the Fiesta Americana Hermosillo on 6/13 & 6/14 and at the Mariana Terra on 6/15 & 6/16. Contact Robert Bridel for reservations. The 3rd container is scheduled later this year, hopefully in the fall, for Micheoan where the sister club of Apple Valley Rotary is diligently working on raising funds to accept delivery.
