Leaky tower threatens
Milligan Memorial Presbyterian Church of Crawfordsville

Journal Review
by Nick Hedrick
Milligan Memorial Presbyterian Church Crawfordsville

It likely would have been the last time the congregation gathered in the beloved church on the hill.

When worship was over the Sunday before last, leaders of Milligan Memorial Presbyterian Church broke the news to the mostly elderly members.

After nearly 121 years, the church was probably going to close. A leak in the bell tower was to blame. A week earlier, the deluge from recent heavy rains caused the ceiling under the tower to collapse.

Elder Ron Addler arrived that Sunday morning to find several members - including a woman on oxygen - scrambling to clean up the mess. With water still pouring in to the building, the church called several contractors to get a price. When it was clear it would be far too expensive to plug the leak professionally, Addler and pastor Jene McVay explained the gravity of the situation. "It was very emotional, because you could actually see it on their faces and, of course, I felt it also," said Addler, the church's organist.

That's when McVay's adult children chimed in.Though members of other churches, they came to the meeting as moral support for their father. They offered to round up friends and others from their own church families to start the project.

"It was something I hadn't even thought of, honestly," McVay said. "I just didn't think there was anybody wanting to do that."

But it will take the rest of the community to finish the job.

The church needs volunteers and donations to fix the roof and make other repairs, in hopes of saving the east-end landmark.

GET INVOLVED

It's expected to cost $15,000 to repair the building.

To donate to Milligan Memorial Presbyterian Church's bell tower repair fund, visit gofundme.com/church-bell-tower-repair-fund.

Checks can be mailed to Milligan Memorial Presbyterian Church, 802 Mill Street, Crawfordsville, IN 47933. Put "Bell Tower Fund" in the memo line.

Meantime, Rock Point Church - where McVay's daughter attends - is sending an engineer and retired contractor for advice. And a former member has come

The church hopes to begin the project in the next month.

Center for Congregations

Reaching Out to the Latino Community

Outreach to the Latino community has been on the minds of many Indiana congregations. In some parts of the state, the Latino community wasn't very visible until recent population growth. But elsewhere, Latinos have been Hoosiers for generations. Workshop leader and pastor Felipe Martinez will help you as a congregational leader consider your options for starting, expanding or refocusing ministry efforts with the Latino community. The workshop, which is June 1 in Hobart, will be presented in English and Spanish.

Exceptional Program Planning

How can your congregation move with greater confidence from creative ideas to initiating great programs? This learning experience, led by Center President Tim Shapiro, will help you improve program planning so that your board, staff, team or committee can successfully address your congregation's challenges and opportunities. This live online workshop is June 7 and June 13.
