Serving Christ, Enhancing Congregations, Connecting Communities
|
This is a call for civility and Christian concern for one another.
Some would say there have been many troubled times in our world and in our denomination and in our presbytery. I believe they would be right. The times we live in today are not any different in some ways, and yet we are faced with unique challenges. The very things that seek to connect people, like social media, are also causes of mistrust, hurt and division. Free speech and freedom of expression are at the heart of core values and constitutional rights as Americans and we know that it is a powerful and inalienable right.
Mutual respect absolutely must be Implicit in our freedom of speech. And yet, somewhere along the way, social media has become a platform for "free expression" that causes us to forget that people we love and with whom we share a connection as followers of Jesus, perhaps can be at best forgotten and at worst ostracized in our zeal to express our opinions.
I've been told, even before I moved to Indiana to begin work in and with the Presbytery of Wabash Valley, that there are many people in our congregations who feel out of touch with the work of the General Assembly and the positions that current and previous general assemblies have taken. They feel unheard and sometimes disrespected. I've been told by members of our presbytery that they have shared a pew with colleagues and heard people characterize them as being ignorant... and worse... because of their political or theological beliefs. And I've been told that some feel as though they cannot preach the gospel, which has a clear message favoring the poor, the marginalized, and the disenfranchised, as being "too political" and "partisan."
Friends....brothers and sisters in Christ... we can do better. I love the power and the possibilities that technology and social media offer to bring us together. However, I am thinking that as we engage in sharing deeply held opinions on many sides of many issues, that we need, desperately, to monitor ourselves. We need to consider what we're modeling when we label people with whom we disagree as a knee-jerk liberal or a redneck, apostate or fundamentalist.
We're having and are preparing to have some hard and sensitive conversations as a presbytery. Let's exercise free speech. Let's preach the gospel. Let's call each other to account. Let's listen closely and speak with care. Let's have really good dialogue...and disagreement, even.... that is rooted and grounded in respect, in good manners and in love. I've said it before and I'll say it again: we need each other. Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us bear witness to all of the fruits of the Spirit that I know are ours: love, joy, peace. patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness. Grace and peace and love to you,
Jennifer

"Lenten Blessings" at March Special Called Assembly
First Presbyterian Church in Mishawaka
& Bethany Presbyterian Church in Lafayette
March 18, 2017
Moderator Sarah Sanderson-Doughty, Elkhart First PC and Candidate Taylor Hall led the Assembly in worship and actions of the church in Wabash Valley on Saturday in Mishawaka and Lafayette. Joined by successful Go-to-Meeting technology, both bodies united to take the following actions:
- Assembly convened with song, prayer, confession and assurance of pardon, and introduction of Taylor Hall by RE Adi Veenendaal, The Presbyterian Church of La Porte, on behalf of CPM and COM.
- Taylor read scripture from Genesis and preached on the theme, "Lenten Blessings," reminding all that good things happen during trying times. He recalled the stories of Abram and Sarai and others who found something new in letting go and stepping forward, trusting in God. He challenged listeners to use personal pain and suffering for something good, to risk taking opportunity and choosing to trust God's love sent through Christ. In darkness, where is the good?
- After reading his statement of faith, Taylor was examined through several questions. His answers elaborated upon his choice to be Presbyterian with
support for the theology and polity of Presbyterians "ever reforming" as witness that we are continually discerning, listening for God's intention today. He talked about his commitment to church being a safe place for many. He talked about celebrating who each person is with open dialogue, what makes us unique beings including his own identity as gay, and working with others to celebrate who they are, loved by God, no matter their identity around race, gender, class or age. Taylor defined accepting God's claim on us as no longer resisting and choosing to acknowledge that claim. He talked about his sense of being gifted by just reading through the scriptures as God's living word for us today while preparing for the Bible content ordination exam, in contrast to the depth of study in various courses and occasions, listening for God speaking to us in joys and celebrations, sorrows and hardships. Taylor noted the importance to him of leaving answers to questions about God beings all powerful and all knowing at times as beyond human understanding, and that he refrains from containing God by insisting upon human comprehension. Assembly voted to sustain his examination and proceed to ordination without audible dissent, and sang the Doxology to celebrate. He will be ordained by his home Presbytery of Plains and Peaks as Pastoral Resident, a validated call at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church in South Bend where he has already been under counsel by Teaching Elders Jamie Miller and Susan Arner while serving the congregation as a staff member since last fall.
- Assembly elected by acclimation the following people to serve in presbytery leadership after no nominees presented from the floor:
- Sarah Bishop, TE, First, South Bend, to complete term of 2017 on COM
- Terry McBride, TE, Michiana Youth, as co-moderator of COR
- Lloyd Sewdin, TE, Ogden Dunes, term of 2019 on COR
- Marilou Limbach, RE, Bethany, Lafayette as moderator of SMT
- Rich Kneifel, RE, Kouts, term of 2019 on SMT
- Maria Rutland, TE, Salem Center, Hudson, as vice moderator of CPM
- Frances Jaquay, RE, Peru, term of 2018 on CPM
- Diane Justice, RE, Delphi, term of 2019 on CPM
- Kevin Bowers, TE, Bethany, Lafayette, to complete term of 2017 on Council
- Adelia Kelso, First, South Bend, term of 2019 on Council
- Nancy Brinklow, RE, LaPorte, ordination exam reader for 2017
- Richard Comingore, RE, Rensselaer, alternate exam reader for 2017
- Consent Agenda presented to Assembly on February 25th and postponed due to difficulties with technology was approved without objection.
- Moderator Sarah Sanderson-Doughty closed the meeting by singing the benediction and encouraging all to attend the Tuesday, May 23rd Assembly at Geneva Center when 222nd GA Co-Moderator Jan Edmiston will join the people of Wabash Valley for worship and conversation.
- Linda Long, Stated Clerk
Your leaders realize that many do not have opportunity to get to know our newest pastors as they join our presbytery as ordained minister-members. Sharing notes of their sermons and Assembly conversations is one way to introduce candidates to presbytery people. We intend to continue that practice.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT SURVEY RESULTS and NEXT STEPS
The Leadership Development Survey, that PWV members were invited to respond to and many participated in, essentially confirmed that our planning assumptions were on target. Further analysis will be facilitated by the preparation of an executive summary which Amy Mader is developing. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT MODULES We agreed that the following leadership development modules should be our first priorities: - Empowering Lay Leadership . . . reducing the burden of leadership . . . partnering with pastors
- Accommodating Changing Styles of Worship. . . generational differences . . . learning from successes and failures
- Overcoming Obstacles to Congregational Growth
- Helping Small and Rural Congregations to Move from Survival to Thrival
Jennifer and Leigh will be working on syllabi for these modules for review, comment and improvement by the group. RESOURCES Jennifer reported on a meeting held recently with Katie Lindberg, Director of the Northwest Office of the Center for Congregations, an organization that could be an important resource for us as we develop our programming. Their focus is with congregations, but there are ways we would be able to access their services and support. Also, discussed was the Theocademy, a collaborative effort by a partnership of Synods, seminaries, and other PC(USA)-related organizations. One of their areas of focus is leadership development for elders and deacons making this valuable partner in our efforts. Leonard Whitsett, Executive of the Synod of Mid America and the originator of the Theocademy concept, could be a resource. In an effort to identify best demonstrated practices Jennifer is checking with other Presbyteries to gain insights into what others are doing in the area of leadership development. MOMENTUM We agreed that it would be important to maintain the momentum of this initiative and not allow too much time to elapse between completion of the survey and follow-up action. Accordingly, we agreed to the following timetable: - By 2/22 Glean information about applicable best demonstrated practices from other Presbyteries (Jennifer)
- By 2/24 Develop an Executive Summary of the Leadership Survey results (Amy, with input from Monica and Leigh)
- By 3/1 Develop syllabi for the four priority modules (Jennifer and Leigh)
- By 3/20 Next Meeting of the Planning Group
- 4/29 Target date for a "trial balloon" leadership development initiative, 8:30am to 11:30am Central Time, possibly using Theocademy materials and facilitation
