We All Can Have a Voice in PC(USA)...
by RE Mike Munson, Deer Creek Presbyterian Church,
222nd General Assembly Presbytery of Wabash Valley Delegate

There are times when you can become so overwhelmed that you need to back away for awhile to digest what happened.

Many thoughts struck me during General Assembly, but what sticks with me most is our Presbyterian polity system and how it works.

We looked at overtures from Presbyteries in our committee of 67 different people and crafted them into overtures that were sent to the Plenary floor. There they were heard, discussed, amended, discussed thoroughly and voted upon by advisory delegates and commissioner delegates. People from Presbyteries across the country were in the room and had a say in all the issues that were before us, if God so moved them.

The main thing I take away is that all of us can have a voice in the process of the Presbyterian Church. Sometimes the vote on issues doesn't go the way we expect or want. But we can make our voices heard at all levels of our denominations governmental process, and walk away brothers and sisters in agreement or disagreement as Gods children.

LabCrossDear God, We are confronted by the words of Hebrews 13:1:m "Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels."  Help us to welcome strangers. Help us to be friendly with those we do not know, Teach us how to overcome bitterness and anger and mistrust with kindness.  Amen.

Please pray for....

  • Those who suffer in silence
                                                                          AMEN!

Nourished by the living waters of Jesus Christ, we awaken, enliven and enhance worshiping communities to courageously extend their branches and bear new fruit in the spirit.

POSTPONED
Saturday, September 10 Healthy Congregations workshop postponed.

New date: February 25, 2017

Friends and colleagues:

We're excited about all of the late summer/early autumn learning opportunities being planned right here in the Presbytery of Wabash Valley. In our zeal, we planned two all-day Saturday workshops right on top of the Saturday September Assembly meeting.

We thought the workshops would appeal to different groups of people, but what we're hearing is that both are of interest, as is the Assembly meeting on the 17th, and that workshop registration may be lower because people are making choices between one or the other offering.

So, with the endorsement of your presbytery planning team, we're postponing the Healthy Congregations workshop with Richard Blackburn on the 10th, which was to be held at First Valparaiso and live streamed to three satellite locations. Richard Blackburn is available to join us on February 25th - place yet to be confirmed. So please Save-the-Date and watch for registration info later, as well as notice of date for rescheduling our winter Assembly.

We were very excited about the chance to experience live streaming of the event in three locations throughout the presbytery, in addition to the live event. We hope to duplicate the opportunity in February, and for other events as well, so that distance is not an impediment and our time can be spent awakening, enlivening and enhancing worshipping communities and celebrating the courageous extension of our branches and all sorts of new fruit in the Spirit.

BOUNDARIES AND ETHICS TRAINING

Tuesday, September 13, 2016 from 10 am - 4 pm (EDT)
Central Presbyterian Church, 31 N Seventh Street, Lafayette
Registration Deadline is Friday, September 5

Ruling Elders, Deacons, Teaching Elders, Sunday School Teachers, Clerk of Session, and other members are invited and encouraged to participate in the upcoming Boundary & Ethics Training events
sponsored by the Commission on Ministry.

We believe this training better prepares our leaders to understand why misconduct, especially sexual misconduct, occurs among church leadership.   By presenting and discussing healthy, appropriate relationships and boundaries, we believe that it is possible to limit the pain, embarrassment and devastation resulting when leader's cross boundaries related to inappropriate conduct in the Church.  Also, our training event will highlight the need to examine and define our boundaries in areas, such as:  the use of internet and social media and our Presbytery's covenant of closure.

Training materials, snacks and lunch will be provided by the Presbytery.  The event and lunch registration deadline is Tuesday, September 6 for September 13 event, by emailing vicki@ourpresbytery.org or calling the presbytery office - 574-223-5678.

Important: If you are required and unable to attend this training you may request a one-year deferral.  (Please write a letter to COM with your request).

Center for Congregations

Shaping Youth as Servant Leaders

Youth need skills that will help them engage beyond themselves.  Servant Leader skills teach youth how to use their capacities to build a better world. These skills include listening, empathy, self-awareness, and contributing to the growth of others.  "Servant Leader" is a secular term drawn from the work of businessman, Robert. K. Greenleaf. Servant Leaders use their power to bring out the good in others rather than dominate others.  They are committed to service above all.

This workshop, led by staff from uLEAD www.uLEADinc.org, trains adult youth workers how to teach Servant Leader skills to their kids.  The workshop will help youth leaders customize their skill training to the youth's developmental stage. It will be an interactive workshop.  Adult youth leaders will walk out with a set of tools they have practiced and can use.
