Seeking to Build a Bridge A Blog From: GA Delegate & Rev. Sarah Sanderson-Doughty, Elkhart First Presbyterian Church It felt different...
June 19, 2016
I've been present for the election of the moderator at General Assembly several times before. I've even watched it live streamed on more than one occasion. And while, in some respects, every one feels unique, this year felt especially different.
I shared this perspective with my friend Sandy, seated next to me. This is her first Assembly and she was very energized by the whole process. She wondered what seemed different.
It was different to only have two options (in my experience- perhaps it has happened before). And it always seemed before like we had the progressive candidate, the evangelical or conservative candidate, and often a moderate or hard to peg candidate.
This year, in some ways, both teams of candidates (and that was different- no matter how we voted we were going to end up with a collaborative, non-hierarchical team! Woohoo!) were basically progressive, but they also didn't fit neatly into established boxes. Hallelujah! Might we be moving into a new, less polarized day in our church? Might that be what the Spirit is up to in this messy, transitional time when, as one of our new co-moderators asserted, we find out what God can do?
I had a question ready to ask. I jumped to a mic quickly and waited patiently. I didn't get to ask it. I wanted to ask "If elected, you will serve as co-moderators of our denomination, a new leadership model for a new day. How does your understanding of this model relate to your vision for the future of the church?" So how might I answer it? Equal partnership, across differences, for the glory of God. May it be so.
(Another difference- There were no questions about human sexuality! But there was an outstanding question from a Young Adult Advisory Delegate about patriarchy and paternalism in liturgy!)
It is not a sexy time to be leader in a mainline denomination. I think the fact that our choice was between two testifies to this. But we have elected a humble yet confident, real and radical, amazing team of leaders. And I am unspeakably grateful Jan and Denise are willing to serve in this way. It was an immense privilege to play a tiny part in that process.

Faith Kokomo Presbyterian Women Receive $25,000 Thank Offering Grant to Support Gilead House Re-entry Housing for Women
| | |
from Bonnie Maple & Linda Gillem, Presbyterian Women of Faith Presbyterian Church Kokomo
A year ago, to help our women start thinking about making a bigger difference outside of our four walls, we decided to apply for a grant from PC(USA) Presbyterian Women's Thank Offering program.
| Bonnie Maple Kokomo Faith, Reba Harris Of Gilead House, & Linda Gillem Kokomo Faith |
The Thank Offering funds programs that provide education, safe housing, clean water, health care and justice for women.
So we applied for a $25,000 grant to benefit Gilead House and it's re-entry program.
With prayer and education we waited for an answer to our grant application. We were so happy on May 1st to know we would be a recipient of the Thank Offering Grant.

You'll hear from diverse leaders from across a wide spectrum of expertise focusing on the intersections and implications of race in all of our justice work. Through this process, we will deepen our understanding of the implications of those intersections in order to strengthen our collective impact.

This free, live online workshop is open to all Indiana congregations and provides an overview of useful key learnings from our recent work with congregations concerning youth ministry. You can access this July 28 and 29 workshop from any computer or mobile device connected to the internet. The Center for Congregations worked with more than 100 congregations in 2016 related to youth ministry issues. Through the years, we have worked with many congregations seeking to strengthen their youth ministry leadership, curriculum, volunteer development, mission trips and much more. Center President Tim Shapiro will share what the Center has learned about effective youth ministry from Indiana congregations and the resources used by their leaders. Click here to watch a video of Tim talking about what you'll learn in this workshop.

PRESBYTERY OF WABASH VALLEY CHURCH MEMBERS SEND US YOUR STORIES
| | |
Every week, we publish this eNewsletter to hundreds of Wabash Valley and PC(USA) members and also post online! The Administrative Assistant accepts articles for entry and is always actively seeking new and original content sharing how your congregation is engaged in ministry. We would especially like to share photos and stories of your confirmands, new members, VBS, mission trips and other special ministries that are occurring in your congregation and community.
Please forward your stories and photos to vicki@ourpresbytery.org, due each Friday. And encourage your congregation's members to join our email list to keep up with news and events across our presbytery. Have you considering printing a few copies and leaving them on your church's resource table for people to pick up?
