Pray For Brussels Belgium

God of grace and peace,
we pray for the city of Brussels
and the people of Belgium.

Help and heal the wounded,
receive the dying into your embrace,
and comfort those who mourn.

cross2.jpg
Strengthen rescue and relief workers
who protect and provide for others
in the midst of crisis and chaos.

Give leaders the wisdom and determination
to understand the causes of hatred
and prevent it from gaining force.

Put an end to all violence and war,
and restrain the impulse
to use injustice to seek justice.

Continue to pour out your mercy
upon the victims of violence in Bangladesh; Istanbul, Turkey; Peshawar, Pakistan; and all the places we forget or ignore.

Surround us all with your grace
and bring peace to our weary world.
This we pray in Jesus' name.

A Meditation for Good Friday

On this darkest of days, we hold close this miracle of God with us. As darkness falls and all is lost, as our souls crumble and our hearts break, we are handed the memory of a Savior who leaned over into the void of the darkness and refused to give in to despair, says Amy Butler. Continue Reading

UP Worthy
Embracing strangers instead of shunning them will always be the most human response to tragedy.

Using hashtags like #IkWillHelpen ("I want to help") and #PorteOuverte ("open house"), the people of Brussels offered shelter to those with nowhere to stay.

After the attacks, people were left without housing and without a means to travel elsewhere. This is what makes the #IkWillHelpen and #OpenHouse hashtags such a necessary, loving response in the face of terror. Embracing strangers instead of shunning them will always be the most human response to tragedy.  Read More

PRAYERS of the PRESBYTERY
Keep your people, in peace, O Lord. In our vanity we feel as if we hold a special place in your kingdom. And yet we, like sheep, have gone astray. Bring us to your green pastures, Great Shepherd, where we may again pasture, find rest, and be strengthened to go on in the ministries to which you guide us. Send your angels among the saints of Christ Presbyterian Church, Winfield. Visit, with strength, those facing special needs. May we praise the holiness that dwells among us, who is the Redeemer of all. Amen.

- From TE Stanley Kessler, Honorably Retired

COURAGE in COMMUNITY
MISSION GIVING AND STEWARDSHIP

While growing up in the early sixties, I vividly remember the annual visit made by an elder, a deacon, and sometimes even the pastor waving a pledge card.

This may have worked then, but it is no longer as viable a strategy given the changing conditions in our congregations. Continue Reading
