February 20 Assembly - A Plea to Connect with one another outside your local congregation to be the connectional church we as Presbyterians are meant to be!
| | |
Last Saturday Rossville Presbyterian Church provided gracious and generous hospitality to 72 ruling and teaching elders and guests assembled as the Presbytery of Wabash Valley. A year ago the February Assembly was postponed for a month due to cold, snow and ice, but last weekend the weather was sunny and remarkably spring-like! Moderator David Smook led the Assembly through its Worshipful Work docket that focused on healing, reminding those gathered of God's work and presbytery mission lived in community with congregations.
- Welcomed three pastors new to Wabash Valley: Barbara Kenley, transitional associate at Central and Mark Mueller, pastor to be installed at First, Valparaiso and Toby Mueller, Director of Discipleship, Christian Education and Community Building at Valparaiso. Guest UCC pastor Jill Lowry was seated as a corresponding member.
- Elected leaders: Ericka Kilbourne (TE, Michigan City) New Ministry Development Team; Sarah Gengler (TE, Brookston), Committee on Representation; Steve Quinlan (TE, Peru), Commission on Ministry; Toby Mueller (TE, Valparaiso) Commission on Ministry; Lucy Rupe (TE, HR) Alternate Ordination Exam Reader; Mark Mueller (TE, Valparaiso), Commission on Preparation for Ministry
- After hearing the Word proclaimed and after examination, approved Candidate Marvin Dandurand for ordination into validated ministry as a chaplain.
- Jill Kitowski (RE, La Porte and Council Moderator) reviewed three-year covenant between Geneva Center, Inc. and Presbytery, affirming ongoing relationship and separate identities. Also heard update from Alan Griffin (TE, Goshen First) on office move to 707 Main St. in Rochester and greater reliance on technology. Jill and Sarah Sanderson-Doughty (TE, Elkhart) reported on progress toward collaborative model anticipated by Joshua Journey process and search for visioning and connecting leader.
- Received update on presbytery finances from Alan Griffin, noting this year we are covering the costs of decisions addressing new needs and new ways of working that will reduce costs in subsequent years; first six months of presbytery fiscal year reflects deficit of $37,000, even though operating costs are substantially below the previous year. Presbytery funded the final deficit of Geneva Center at $68,000 to support the new Geneva Center, Inc. as an independent charitable organization to host retreats, camping and conferences.
- Commissioned
ruling elder and seminary student Tim Reyna to half-time pastoral position with Christ, Winfield and shifting to half time at First, Portage where he is already commissioned.

- Voted to concur with overture to 222nd GA proclaiming Affirmation of Creation as framework to enhance dialogue between the church and scientists, presented by Steve Braden (TE, HR) and Bert Veenendaal (RE, La Porte).
- Heard from Youth Triennium co-registrar Anna Parkinson (TE, at large) and were urged with testimonials to sponsor high school students to the gathering in July 19-23, 2016 on the campus of Purdue, and to volunteer as adult chaperons. Presbytery will contribute one-third the cost for each attendee from presbytery congregations.
- Received Eucharist and gave offerings of prayer, gifts of $381.25 for One Great Hour of Sharing, and personal dedication.
- Moderator Smook closed at 2:10 pm by urging each congregation to connect with another congregation, form a prayer alliance, and report in May about what happens next; then sent out the Assembly with prayer.
Next regularly scheduled Assembly will meet Tuesday, May 17, 2016, hosted by First Presbyterian Church, 102 W Main St, Peru, IN 46970-4238

PRAYERS of the PRESBYTERY
| | |
Gracious Lord, keep us mindful of Your covenant with us, sealed in the body and blood of Jesus Christ! When we feel like we are few in numbers, of little account, and lost and wandering in the wilderness of this world, when we feel oppressed or lonely-yes, remind us that you protect your own. Lift us up and bless us to do the work which you have purposed! We ask for your favor to continue to bless the congregation of Angola, Chapel-of-the-Lakes Presbyterian Church.
- From TE Louis Sandos, Honorably Retired
We hold in prayer....
- TE Sue Babovec, Chaplain at Peabody Retirement Community, as she faces hip surgery tomorrow.
- CRE Donna Enersen, Frankfort, Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church as she recovers from complications of a recent hand surgery
- Geneva Center, INC board and the staff as they move forward
- Those who suffer in silence...
In your name we pray. Amen.

Trading membership for discipleship helping churches, Christians -
| | |
Young people especially are not inspired by being members of churches - or of any institutions, experts say. So it's in the best interests of congregations to redefine themselves as places from where disciples go to serve the world. - Continue Reading
