Passage to Ponder... Psalm 8:1-2 (CEB)
1 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name throughout the earth! You made your glory higher than heaven! 2 From the mouths of nursing babies you have laid a strong foundation because of your foes, in order to stop vengeful enemies.

Advent and the grace of delayed gratification
In our world of instant delivery and fast passes, the countercultural season of Advent offers no shortcuts. Instead, we must walk slowly alongside the expectant couple, beholding the ordinary and turning our hearts to the Holy Spirit, writes Christopher Edmonston, Senior pastor, White Memorial Presbyterian Church, Raleigh, N.C.

to Europe is the most deadly route, claiming the lives of over 3,000 people in 2015 and more than 30,000 lives in the past 30 years. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees over 720,000 people have successfully made the journey to Europe in 2015, but they have done so mainly through dangerous and exploitative means. Most have fled their countries due to war, violence, persecution, political instability, famine, deadly diseases and scarcity of resources. Though many know the trek may be fatal, the hope of life free from these atrocities motivates them to take risks that-to observers-seem incomprehensible. Continue Reading

PRAYERS of the PRESBYTERY
| | |
Lord, it was not enough for you to care for the poor. You chose to become one of them by descending as you did. Keep us free from fear and selfish preoccupations that we may walk as you walked among the poor, sick, and dying in body and spirit. - From Common Prayer We hold in prayer...
- Rev. Jack Hess, Honorably Retired, who is recovering from laser treatment on both eyes due to optic nerve deterioration.
- Rev. Ron Elly, Earl Park PC, who is recovering in a rehabilitation facility from a recent illness.
- Rev. Bobbi Tobin, Honorably Retired, who is home bound and continuing treatment for neuropathy.
We thank you Lord for Cutler United Presbyterian Church who has faithfully served their community and you since 1835.
Amen.

As hearts and minds turn to holiday parties, church leaders' thoughts will turn to year-end giving. Understanding the laws and reporting requirements for contributions are a critical task of church finance.
- Learn about a new proposed regulation (REG-138344-13) regarding a new voluntary IRS form that churches may file to confirm contributions.
- Verify your compliance with reporting requirements and appropriate timing.
- Give the proper response to those postdated checks.
- Learn how online giving is affected by timing.
- Review non-cash contribution reporting.
- Hear the latest on year-end stock and IRA gifts.
- Consider whether BITCOIN might be in your contribution future.
- Ask your specific questions about all things contributions.
Uncertainty about reporting requirements is enough to spoil a good punch bowl of eggnog... but clear understanding can bring added holiday joy.
