God Calls

Thirty one ways to appreciate your pastor
Passage to Ponder... Ezekiel 3:1-3 (NRSV)

He said to me, "O mortal, eat what is offered to you; eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel." So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat. He said to me, "Mortal, eat this scroll that I give you and fill your stomach with it." Then I ate it; and in my mouth it was as sweet as honey.

The calling(s) of multipotentialites
We have not one, but many, vocations in this life.
by Adam Walker Cleaveland "So, what is your calling?"
As well-intentioned as that common question is, it does a disservice to many people, I think.

If I were to suggest a small grammatical edit to the question itself, I might change it to: "So, what are your callings?"

In her TEDxBend talk, "Why some of us don't have one true calling," writer and artist Emilie Wapnick talks about people whom she calls "multipotentialites." These are people who have varied interests and will probably not settle down to one job and make a career of it.

PRAYERS of the PRESBYTERY
Give us grace, O God, to dare to do the deed which we well know cries to be done. Let us not hesitate because of ease, or the words of [other's] mouths, or our own lives. Mighty causes are calling us - the freedom of women, the training of children, the putting down of hate and murder and poverty - all these and more. But they call with voices that mean work and sacrifice and death. Mercifully grant us, O God, the spirit of Esther, that we say: I will go unto the King, and if I perish, I perish.
                                                                           from
W.E.B. Du Bois
