Passage to Ponder... John 2: 1-3 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine."

Have you missed seeing your Presbytery friends? Our Assembly Retreat, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 18th and 19th. We'll gather for the evening meal at 6:00 PM on Friday with hopes of completing our work by Saturday at noon.
As we are Nourished by the Living Waters of Jesus Christ, we will seek to enliven our time together in worship, education, fellowship, and the business of the Presbytery. Our worship on Friday evening will be led by Revs. Rebecca Kirkpatrick and Joshua Yoder who have returned from their two-year mission at the Evangelical Theological Seminary of Cairo, Egypt. Concluding with a presentation of their travels and mission work.
On Saturday morning, we will gather to awaken the day with a fine Geneva Center breakfast and enhance our day by joining our worshipping communities as they courageously work to extend their branches in discussion of the recommendations of the Council to the Assembly about the leadership and support staff model. This has been a long process but bear with us as this model is proposed as the new fruit of our many labors during the two-day Council retreat held last month. As we gather in Rochester, we pray that above all things we will be guided in our work for the work of the Kingdom and of the Spirit.
There is also a message somewhat hidden within this Call to Assembly. The first person to contact Jill Kitowski via email with the correct answer to the hidden message and where the message comes from will be the proud winner of a Geneva Center shirt. Contact info is JILL2536@comcast.net. Contest is open to all with the exception of those on staff or serving on the Council of Presbytery. In Peace and with prayers for all, Jill Kitowski, Moderator of Assembly

Pastor Dave Wood accompanied a group of adults from the First Presbyterian Church of Crown Point, IN on an Adult Mission Trip from August 10-14 to Roscommon in northern Michigan where they spent several days scraping and painting a house that is part of Camp Westminster. "It was a wonderful experience and the camp--situated on the banks of Higgins Lake and serving Presbyterians since 1925--is surrounded by so much beauty. We only wished we could have spent more time there."

The Prophetic: That Which Keeps Us Alive!
...for our God is consuming fire. Hebrew 12:29
Join us as we gather for McCormick Days, October 22 and 23. Rev. Claudio Carvalhaes, associate professor of Homiletics and Worship here at McCormick, will help us look more deeply at the symbols and substance of our faith.
Additional highlights of this year's event include a screening and discussion of the film, Trigger: The Ripple Effect of Gun Violence, produced and directed by David Barnhart, and an interfaith panel discussion about what the "the prophetic" means in various faith traditions.

University of Dubuque Theological Seminary
There is still time to register for Fall classes!
Looking for a way to jump start your ministry? These five-week classes are designed to inspire, engage and sustain your work in the church.
"Shop Talk for Preachers"
Dr. Robert Hoch, Associate Professor of Homiletics and Worship
September 14 - October 18
Students of preaching, whether veterans in the pulpit or just starting out, will find this class inspiring and instructive. Participants will read Cornelius Plantinga's Reading for Preaching, a work focused on understanding the relationship between literature, theology, and the preaching ministry. While we're at it, we'll dive into and talk about the theological and biblical themes that emerge in Wendell Berry's modern classic, Jayber Crow. Finally, the instructor will share practical strategies for developing what he calls "our inner homiletician" -- a set of skills that will assist participants as they develop long term practices for vocational growth. This is a great opportunity to enhance your preaching by interacting with other pastors and engaging in conversation with Dr. Hoch. "Exploring Vitality in Rural Congregations"
Dr. Richard Shaffer, Associate Dean and Assistant Professor of Ministry
October 19 - November 22
This course will explore the practices and programs that bring vitality and vision to rural congregations and their ministries. We will examine the practices of successful church leaders, share ideas about programs that have been successful, and suggest resources that may work in your ministry setting. This will be a five-week seminar that encourages input from ministry leaders and puts us face to face with others who have brought new life to the churches they serve. We will use our time together to share those ideas and help one another develop ministries that make a difference.
Register today! The cost for each class is only $150.
If this is your first online class with UDTS you will also need to take our Orientation to Online Learning, for a one-time fee of only $75. To register contact Bridgett Boone: 563.589.3691 | EMail: BBoone@dbq.edu

The presenter, Molly Phinney Baskette, author of the fabulous (really, I couldn't put it down) book, Real Good Church: How Our Church Came Back From the Dead, and Yours Can, Too. She led the turnaround of a little UCC congregation of 20 (in a big old building) into a thriving 150+ multigenerational congregation. She is humble, funny, very practical, and inspires hope.
Date for the Chesterton site is Thursday, September 24. Details on the link, etc.
