God's up to something;
will the church be part of it?

Rev. Dr. Amy Butler, senior minister of The Riverside Church, New York

After decades in the mainstream, comfortable and complacent, the church is now being pushed to the margins of American life, says the Rev. Dr. Amy Butler, senior minister of The Riverside Church in New York.

But that's not necessarily a bad place to be, she said.

For years, the church has failed to speak prophetically to the issues of the day, but now everything is changing.

"The church is being pushed to the margins of society, which to me is one of the most exciting things I've seen in a long time," she said. "Because, finally, maybe we have the courage to stand up and say the things that need to be said."

Life on the margins brings with it a certain amount of freedom, Butler said.

"I don't need to perpetuate this institution, the church, anymore," Butler said. "If we hold it loosely, and we have the courage to live into what the gospel is calling us to do and be, who knows what could happen?

"This is God's work. God's up to something, and the choice that the church has is, 'Do you want to be part of it?'"

PRAYERS of the PRESBYTERY
Lord we praise you for the gift of life! We thank you for a new day. We praise you for these things in the little, everyday reminders: a sunrise, a congregation of chirping birds, or a drop of dew on a spider's web. Lord, thank you for these things, and many more.

We thank you Lord for Howe, Lima Presbyterian Church who has faithfully served their community and followed you Lord since August 10, 1833.

In his name we pray, Amen.

Application to the:

Every two years, our Presbytery prayerfully elects commissioners to the General Assembly to discern on behalf of the Presbyterian Church (USA) what it means to be Christ's Church today. The work of the General Assembly comes back to the presbyteries for votes to approve or disapprove its proposed amendments to the PC(USA) Constitution. Typically, our Presbytery is entitled to send two Ruling Elders, two Teaching Elders, and one Young Adult Advisory Delegate (YAAD).

Any PC(USA) Teaching Elder member of this Presbytery may apply to the Nominating Committee for nomination as a Commissioner.  Applications from Ruling Elder and Young Adult Advisory Delegate candidates must be endorsed by the Session of his or her particular congregation.

Below are links to forms to apply for nomination as a Commissioner or a YAAD. Email your completed form to [email protected] or fax 574-223-3545.

Completed forms must be received in the Presbytery Office by October 1, 2015, to be distributed to the Nominating Committee for its consideration.
