Passage to Ponder... 1 Peter 4:7-10

The end of all things is near.  Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.  Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.  Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.  Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.

FULL DAY OF COUNCIL WORK
On a beautiful sunny Indiana day Presbytery's Council met

on July 21st with prayer, shared study of Hebrews 10 with its teachings about relationships and "provoke one another to love and good deeds".

And conducted the following business on behalf of the Presbytery:

  • Talked with RE Jim Hubbard, Valparaiso First PC and TE Steve Mullin, Honorably Retired, from the Geneva Center Transition Team and approved filing of an application to form an Indiana corporation for the Geneva Center ministry and contracting for an appraisal of presbytery property housing Geneva Center. Approved $500 for initial expenses to begin search for a transitional director for Geneva Center, with position description and funding yet to be finalized.
  • Talked with TE Kevin Bowers, Lafayette Bethany PC and TE Sara Dingman, Synod of Lincoln Trails Transitional Executive, seeking input about the restructuring model referred to the "Team of Five/Four" for its research and recommendations to Council.
  • Consulted with TE Sally Wicks, The La Porte PC, and voted to recommend to the Assembly her task force's revised policy for discernment with congregations and steps for its implementation.
  • Reviewed financial reports showing a deficit of $111,715 for fiscal year July 2014-June 2015 for presbytery and its basic mission, and operating fund deficit of $36,041 for Geneva Center for six months of 2015.
  • Voted down a proposal to engage a consultant to serve as facilitator and worship leader for council's August retreat with financial support from the Synod and listed issues requiring decisions at the August meeting.
  • Approved for recommendation to the Assembly an amendment to the Standing Rules concerning docketing and referral of matters brought for Assembly action.
  • Voted down a proposed policy to limit Presbytery decision-making positions to Presbyterian teaching and ruling elders.
  • Approved the nomination of teaching elders Harry Roselle (Deer Creek), Lyle Ewing (Auburn) and Paul Anderson (Dyer & Merrillville) for election by the Assembly to the Nominating Committee.
  • Received written reports from Nominating Committee indicating its current priorities, AC for Kouts noting reconciliation, and Personnel Ministry Team reporting staff performance reviews and need for tech support.

Things are in place and planned for Growing Together. I hope you have registered for the small church workshop, but, if not, please do so by tomorrow, July 23rd when registration will close. This is a great opportunity to approach issues common to the church from the special perspective of the small church. Facilitator Dennis Bickers brings a wealth of knowledge on this subject along with experience presenting this material.

We have a good group registered at this point, but there are several names absent from the list. If one of those names is yours, please take this opportunity to register using the link below.  One congregation has 12 registered - let's see if there is a congregation to register even more.

The workshop is being subsidized, so the cost is only $10 per person or to take advantage of the best value of $25.00 complete one form per congregation with each participant named.

Need help with registration please feel free to contact the Presbytery office at 574-223-5678.

Office of the General Assembly

Irene Pak

One of my favorite aspects about being Presbyterian is  that no matter what we are called to do within the life of the church, we are called to do it in community. We know that being called to do things together sometimes makes things a lot easier and sometimes more difficult, depending on how we like to work, but in the life of the church, we are called to "do" and to "be" church together.          Continue Reading

Sundays and Seasons: Vibrant Worship Planning

A 90-minute webinar presented by Michael Waschevski
Tuesday, August 25 at 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. PT)

Excellent worship is key for a spiritually alive and healthy congregation and for each member's spiritual growth and effectiveness as a disciple of Jesus Christ.  Congregations have much at stake in planning and providing such worship.  In this webinar we will engage in focused exploration and practice in planning for both weekly and seasonally significant worship.

Participants will:

  • Appreciate the interrelatedness of various elements and movements within a typical Lord's Day service.
  • Understand different musical styles and genres and their significance in worship.
  • Consider opportunities and obstacles encountered in planning engaging, educational worship.
  • Plan a Lord's Day service using lectionary texts for a typical Sunday in Ordinary Time (October 11, 2015).
  • Explore several ideas for deepening congregational worship in the upcoming cycle of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany
