Sustainable Design
The vibrancy of an institution depends on its sustainability over time.
Leaders often equate sustainability with money, and focus on short-term fundraising at the expense of long-term strategy. Designing a sustainable institution does, indeed, require financial capital, as well as four other types: human, intellectual, service and network capital. Focusing on the last four types often strengthens the ability to acquire financial capital.
A sustainable institution knows its mission and acquires and spends its capital in service of it. With that clear sense of purpose, institutional leaders can more wisely decide what needs to be pruned and what needs to grow to enhance the institution.
Exploring the Idea
How to design a sustainable institution »
Theologian L. Gregory Jones, the former dean of Duke Divinity School, writes that sustainable design depends on a logic of abundance, namely, that vibrant institutions are responsive to God's abundant provision in creation.
To focus on mission, sometimes institutions must be pruned » To enable growth, a leader needs to understand an institution's "soul" and be willing to prune anything that doesn't contribute to its thriving, Jones writes.
Capital is more than money » Leadership adviser Laura Nichol shows how organizations can generate greater financial capital by focusing attention also, and to an extent more determinatively, on other forms of capital simultaneously.

years. This summer the group decided to do something to build relationships between the churches and reach out to the surrounding community.
People like to eat and picnics are a great way to gather folks around the table. The Presbyterian churches in Flora, Delphi and Cutler are hosting picnics in June, July and August this summer to which they are inviting Carroll County Presbyterians and the community surrounding the host church. If the June gathering is any indication, these picnics are a wonderful means by which to build relationships.
Flora Presbyterian hosted the first gathering the last week of June. 80 people, young and old, church members and community folks, and representatives from at least three of the Carroll County churches attended. Food, fun and conversation were the order of the day. Sorry if you missed it, but there is another chance to participate when Delphi hosts the picnic July 29.

At the recommendation of the Healthcare Committee, the Board of Directors assured medical dues stability for employers and members in 2016 by: - maintaining the current dues for Traditional Program medical coverage through 2016; and
- holding the medical dues minimum and maximum at 2015 levels.
The current dues of 23 percent for Member-only coverage and 24.5 percent for Member + Family coverage will remain in effect for 2016 (subject to the medical participation minimum of $44,000 and maximum of $124,000, which also are remaining constant). The current medical dues-sharing option will again be available: Employers may -- subject to presbytery policy, as applicable -- require members with family coverage to pay some or all of the allowable dues share in 2016 (the 1.5 percent portion of the 24.5 percent dues for Member + Family coverage). |
