God
Calls
Passage to Ponder... Luke 4:18-19 (NRSV)

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because God has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. God has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

(from the Presbytery of Wabash Valley  2014 Monthly Bible Study  Reading and Reflection)

The approaching Thanksgiving holiday reminds us that we have much to be thankful for. One of things for which I am most grateful as your moderator this past year, is the number of people who faithfully do the work of the Presbytery of Wabash Valley.

From Hebrews we receive this advice: "And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another..." (Heb. 10: 24-25)

I'm intrigued by that idea, that we provoke one another to be more loving, that we challenge each other to do more good deeds, when we meet together regularly for mutual encouragement and accountability. In this day of electronic meetings, conference calls, email conversations, twitters and tweets, it's important for us to remember the joyful discipline of meeting together for worship and to discern the will of God together.

In just two weeks, we will be meeting together for our November Presbytery Assembly. We have several matters of importance before us:

--decisions about the future of Geneva Center and the organization of the presbytery, as we consider the final report of the Joshua Journey II team

--the examination of a pastor who wishes to serve one of our congregations

--opportunities for gladsome worship and meaningful engagement with Scripture

--opportunities to hear from Sara Dingman, our Synod Transitional Executive, and Ed Thompson, our Board of Pensions area representative

--a chance to hear an update on the continuing work of our General Assembly Commissioners

--hearing the reports of several Administrative Commissions which are working with local congregations to help them discern their futures

--recognizing pastoral transitions and the certifying of a Christian Educator

--hearing reports from our General Presbyter, Frank Vardeman, and our Stated Clerk, Linda Long, as well as from various entities of the presbytery

            --discussing the budget for 2015

--installing officers and electing commission members

I'm sure that you will agree that it sounds like a full day. The work that we have done together in 2014 has been sometimes difficult, but often joyous, sometimes agonizing, but often inspiring. Please plan on being a part of the Presbytery Assembly on November 18. The prayer and worship, the discussion and discernment, will be richer for your participation. I look forward to seeing you at this assembly as we seek to serve Jesus Christ faithfully in our time and place.

Joyfully,

Jeff Cover, Moderator

 Associate Pastor, Central Presbyterian Church,

Lafayette, IN

Each congregation's session is encouraged to name an elder-commissioner to attend the Presbytery Assembly.  Ideally-- but not required-- the elder-commissioner will attend several meetings in a row to get acquainted with the matters that continue from meeting to meeting. Please forward email address of elected elder-commissioner to vicki@ourpresbytery.org. If your commissioner would like to read previous minutes, send an email to Linda.L.Long@gmail.com and the Stated Clerk will send them.  Invitation to register for November Assembly goes out later today.

PRAYERS of the PRESBYTERY
God, today we pray for the future of our congregations who make up the Presbytery of Wabash Valley and the PC(USA). Bridge the chasm we have created that paralyzes our ability to talk with one another and learn from our differences. Remind us of the common humanity which unites us.

Please lift those listed below in prayer:
  • CRE John Beehler, Bethel Presbyterian Church, Union Mills, and family as they mourn the loss of John's nephew James Beehler. Please join in the celebration of the recent marriage of son Cody Beehler.
  • Ann Haworth, wife of Rev. Bill Haworth, Garrett Presbyterian Church & Smock Senior Ministries, for continued healing.
  • Please hold the family of the late Rev. Paul Kitley, former pastor at Lafayette Elston Presbyterian Church, in prayer.
  • Rev. Jack Hess, Honorably Retired, healing prayers.
  • Rev. Maria Rutland, Minister Member at Large, healing prayers.
  • Please hold those in prayer of spoken and unspoken need.
We pray for and with Schneider United Presbyterian Church who has faithfully served their community and followed you O' Lord since 1911.

Amen.

Friends,

After presentation of the recommendations for the future of The Presbytery of Wabash Valley by the Joshua Journey Task Force 2, we noted several questions that had arisen in addition to email communiques and personal questions directed to members of the Task Force.  In response to queries and requests for more information, we have compiled FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) and a Restructure Comparison Chart to be linked to the Joshua Journey logo on the Presbytery's website, www.ourpresbytery.org.  In addition to appearing on the website, there will be a US mailed distribution to minister members, clerks of session and elder commissioners that attended the September Assembly.  If you will be having a different elder commissioner at the November Assembly, we request that the churches make  copies of the distributed document available to the new commissioner. Join our voices in prayerful discernment for God's call for the future of the Presbytery of Wabash Valley.

What does the Bible say?

About resources, faith, money, and stewardship? Here are 27 passages to ponder:

The choicest of the first fruits of your ground you shall bring into the house of the Lord your God. Exodus 23:19

All tithes from the land, whether the seed from the ground or the fruit from the tree, are the Lord's; they are holy to the Lord. Leviticus 27:30

Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the highest heavens, the earth and all that is in it. Deuteronomy 10:14

Set apart a tithe of all the yield of your seed that is brought in yearly from the field. Deuteronomy 14:22
