Passage to Ponder... Luke 10:29-32 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

Dear Presbyters,
Earlier this month almost 50 Ruling and Teaching Elders from across the Presbytery gathered at Geneva Center for training on key boundary and ethics training. Led by Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor, Carol Hornbeck, of Indianapolis, participants heard first hand of new studies about the growing

problems in church and society about boundary and ethics violations. Attendees participated in role playing, watched videos and had lively and informative discussion at their tables with colleagues. The reviews and evaluations were excellent across the board and we give thanks to Carol for her great leadership, but also to all the Ruling Elders and Teaching Elders who took advantage of this wonderful opportunity provided to the Presbytery by the Commission on Ministry.

"Poverty and Children"

"We don't want our daughters to be hostages of wealth." Madam Achol Majok Kur pronounces the words slowly and expressively. She emphasizes her aversion of widespread cultural attitudes and practices that lead to forced marriages and gender-based violence.
"Because of the high dowry, I'd be given to the man that I don't like. If a man offers 200 cows, and the man I love has 50 heads of cattle, I will be forced by my parents to go to the one with 200 cattle, because that is what they want. I am counted by them in terms of wealth."
Achol chairs the Women's Desk of the South Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church (SSPEC), a new denomination and offshoot from its Sudanese namesake in the North. Along with other Christians from African descent, however, their opportunity to thrive as a minority religious group in a predominantly Arab Muslim context had become increasingly restricted. When South Sudan gained autonomy from Sudan in 2011, many of these Presbyterians decided to return to their ancestral land, with a fervent desire to help rebuild society in a new nation, where the church would have the latitude to effectively engage in that transformative process.
"If you have a girl, your future is secured. Even if you don't have cattle this year, you know that in 10 years' time you will, because you have this girl. So this girl is considered as an asset." Traditionally parents in South Sudan marry off their daughters at a very young age as child brides to often much older men. Achol explains that in most cases these forced marriages result in unhealthy, loveless relationships in which women are considered the rightful property of their husbands. They end up suffering emotional and physical abuse from the hands of their spouses while feeling abandoned by their parents.
Achol continues: "This is an issue we need to take on as SSPEC women. First it needs to be addressed at the family level. If situations like that are happening around us, we have to reach out as a church and as members of the local community. Changing human beings is a process. We need to bring people to understand that education is the key. The girl will then start making decisions for herself. There is no need for anyone to decide on her behalf. Feeling empowered by her education, she will not let herself be forced again, but [she will] carry on making her own decisions. Instead of being married off in fifth grade or so, she can insist on going to secondary school, reasoning that later on she will be a mother who knows how to take care of her child. She would even know how to give her child medicines and be able to read the vaccination card. This is why education is the key, and girls have to make that choice for themselves."

South Bend Memorial Rummage Sale = Outreach Ministry
| | |
The annual church rummage sale for Memorial in South Bend was truly more than a sale - it was outreach ministry to the community.
As usual, the members prepared for many months in advance accepting any and all types of donations. What seemed to be one of the leanest collections of 'treasures' actually turned out to be a great reminder of the story of the loaves and fishes.
Each and every member participated in this annual event which now has over a 10-year history of always being the same weekend each year. We reached farther out to show our love and support of the neighborhood by also serving a free lunch to 180 shoppers.
They enjoy seeing the inside of the neighborhood church that keeps them on their daily schedule by hearing our carillon bells.
Shopping fun, laughter, good conversations and a quick lunch left us all with a loving feeling from our community.

"We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace."
- Barack Obama, from his 2009 Inaugural Address

Where is your General Presbyter
Rev. Frank Vardeman

To All Presbyters: I have been struggling for the past year with constant pain and lack of mobility in my left knee which was replaced in August 2013. Surgeon referred me to Midwest Orthopedics at Rush Hospital in Chicago. Tests determined that the joint is loose and not working properly and needs to be replaced. I scheduled total replacement surgery for October 24 and expect to be out of commission for about two weeks. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
