Passage to Ponder... 1 Kings 17:12-13

But she said, "As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die." Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son.

COUNCIL BRIEF
          Sharing Insights and Praying Together

On Tuesday, August 19th, Council Moderator Kevin Bowers called fifteen elders to order at Geneva Center, and after reading I Kings 17: 8-16, sharing insights and praying together, conducted the following business:

  • Approved proposed Congregational Stewardship Assessment Survey to accompany statistical reports for 2014, to assist with planning training, congregational support and presbytery planning.
  • Approved invitation to incoming Synod Executive Sara Dingman to speak to the November Assembly and invitation to General Assembly leadership or staff to speak to February Assembly.
  • Approved motion to begin planning a special presbytery event for May 2015 to focus on small churches, hearing success stories and addressing concerns such as towns with declining populations, aging buildings, possibilities for shared ministry, financial planning, assessing congregational viability and other challenges for small congregations.
  • Heard report from Stewardship Ministry Team that the total dollar cost of Geneva Center in the Presbytery operating/mission/reserves funds during the last 5-years (2009-2013) averages $119,423 annually (this does not include PWV staff support). This amount includes payments for mission support, building/common area use, and "extra" funding of deficits in 2009 and 2014. For 2013, the amount was $141,449 including the transfer to balance the GC operating fund.  Presbytery deficits exceeded $80,000 for the last two years. Without additional funding that deficit is likely grow to $120k in 2016. While the presbytery has about $500,000 in reserves, we are required to maintain a $300,000 balance.  This means that with a projected shortfall of $120,000 a year that we have less than 2 years of funding.
  • Voted 6-5 not to affirm the restructuring model for presbytery as presented by Joshua Journey 2 team after more than an hour of questions and discussion. Basic outline as proposed to Council has six Assembly meetings per year normally meeting in churches, three coordinators and Stated Clerk each at one quarter time, trustees for property matters, Frank as Transitional Executive during transition, no Council, no General Presbyter, and sale of Geneva Center or spin-off of it into a 501(c)3 organization."
  • Concurred, in response to letter from Calvary-Logansport announcing its desire to be dismissed to another denomination, with plans to prepare a team with specific authority to be delegated by the Assembly to work with Calvary on a dismissal process and agreement.
  • Agreed to recommend that the Assembly concur with the request of University Church Board President David Carmichael to dissolve the specialized ministry relationship with the Presbytery of Wabash Valley in keeping with efforts of that worshiping community to redirect its ministry and worship location.
  • Received written reports from COM, CPM, General Presbyter, Stated Clerk and Thorntown AC, and approved minutes of July 15, 2014.

- Linda Long, Stated Clerk

PRAYERS of the PRESBYTERY
Lord God, you are a redeeming God.
It is not your desire that any of your children should suffer. You hear their cries and you come from heaven to save. As we gather to remember your saving purposes for all who are oppressed, give us minds, hearts and wills to hear your word to us, and then to live it.

Please continue to lift those listed below in prayer:
  • Joanne Gasser, wife of Honorably Retired Rev. Ellis Gasser - healing
  • Linda Gillem, Faith PC Kokomo & Stewardship Ministry Team member - healing
  • Rev. Louis Sandos, Honorably Retired - loss of sister
We continue to ask special prayers for all those returning to school, teachers and students, cafeteria workers and teachers aides, bus drivers and maintenance workers and parents and guardians.

In this time of angst and anger, frustration and fear over the shooting death of eighteen-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) calls for calm and prayer.

Please continue to hold all of our mission co-works in prayer.

We pray for and with University Church at Purdue, West Lafayette who has faithfully served the college community and followed you O' Lord.

We pray this in the name of Christ the Savior. Amen.

Prayer from: Eunice T. McGarrahan, A Study of the Belhar Confession and its Accompanying Letter (Louisville: Office of Theology and Worship), p. 6.

Why Should We Care? Financial FAQ's, Best Practices and Resources

Properly implemented and resourced, the church financial and administrative ministry can operate efficiently in the background - providing accurate information that is both timely and transparent - in support of our mission today and into the future. In this interactive session we will share questions, experiences and practical solutions that seek to "demystify" this critical aspect of our work together.

Mission Focused Stewardship: 10 Ways to Increase Giving To Your Church

This workshop explores spiritual components of stewardship development and offers 10 immediately do-able and transformative steps. The conversation will also include discussions of narrative budgets, year-round stewardship education, the roles of pastors and sessions in stewardship, the Biblical basis of healthy stewardship and the theology of abundance in a world focused on scarcity.

Church Guide to Tax-Advantaged Health Reimbursement Plans

There are a myriad of changes and new requirements to healthcare coverage and related qualified reimbursable expenses. This workshop discusses the impact of 2015 changes in the (PCUSA) Board of Pensions plan and reviews tax-advantaged benefit plans that can allow both church employees and employers to save on the cost of healthcare.

Presbyterian Fellowship of Students at Indiana University

Every year, when fall arrives or is at least on the horizon, many students leave their homes and home churches, and move away to attend colleges and universities. Every year, there are many missed connections between ministries in those college and university towns and students who make that move away from their home church. There are ways to encourage that connection. Parents, ministers and youth leaders in home churches - along with students themselves - can find churches near where they attend school. Many Presbyterian churches are associated with a specific collegiate ministry in a "college town." Other collegiate ministries - and chaplains at Presbyterian-related colleges and universities, and at many other private schools - can typically be found under student organizations at respective campus websites. Click here for information about UKIRK@IU. Another excellent resource is UKirk, the network of collegiate ministries supported by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). It can be found at "UKirk." It's also on Facebook.

Window Into World Mission

Thank you so much for your support of PC(USA) mission co-workers!  We are grateful for your help in witnessing to the Good News, which reaches around the world.

This August, 2014 edition of Window Into World Mission features a portion of a letter from Kate Taber in Israel-Palestine, who shares her on-the-ground perspective of life amidst conflict.  You can read Kate's full letter, as well as a more recent update on the current violence, through the letter links at http://www.presbyterianmission.org/ministries/missionconnections/taber-kate/

In 2008, native Jerusalemite Sahar Vardi had recently graduated from high school. She was 18 years old.  And she was in prison, punished for refusing to be conscripted into the Israeli army.  She wrote to Prime Minister Netanyahu, "The bloody cycle in which I live-made up of assassinations, terrorist attacks, bombings, and shootings-has resulted in an increasing number of victims on both sides.  It is a vicious circle that is sustained by the choice of both sides to engage in violence.  I refuse to take part in this choice."

Sahar recently described the occupation and why she believes it must end.  She told a story of a sick horse from a village whose only access has a checkpoint on it.  The soldiers at the checkpoint have a list of every object and person allowed in the village.  When the owner brought the horse to the checkpoint on his way home from the vet in Bethlehem, the soldier refused to let the horse through, saying it wasn't on the list.  The villagers had to call an Israeli friend who made calls to the military, and eventually the commander gave the soldier permission to let the horse through.  "This isn't a tragic story," Sahar said, "No one was hurt.  No one did anything wrong; the soldier was just following orders.  But it gives a glimpse of the total control the occupation has over the lives of Palestinians."  I was left saddened by Sahar's picture of the pervasiveness of fear and hostility in Israeli society, but heartened by her commitment to making her country what it could be-an equal and fair society free of all the burdens of war.

Meeting Sahar humbled me about the vast knowledge and experience I do not possess around this conflict.  It was easy for me to be casual about my move to Israel-Palestine, as I've done it twice before.  A lot is familiar-the smell of the spice shops, the sound of the call to prayer, the sight of Orthodox Jews, Palestinians, and internationals all trekking around the same streets surrounding the Old City.  But there is much that remains new and unfamiliar.  This time I must understand the ongoing politics within Israel and the Palestinian-occupied territories. This time, I must become familiar with the culture and politics of the various Christian factions here.  This time, I must learn what it means to represent the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in this particular place.

As God promises in my favorite passage from Isaiah, "I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy, and its people as a delight...no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress (Isaiah 65:18b and 19b)." The people I have met have convinced me that God truly is in the midst of this process, guiding and leading all of us to a future of peace and justice for all.
