"I love my denomination. I love that we value ecumenism, that we have a representative polity, that we encourage leadership in all people regardless of age, gender, race, and as of recently, sexual orientation. I love that we have adopted eleven confessions to represent the width and depth of Christian understanding. What I don't love is the occasional contentiousness which simmers and then boils over, resulting in either schism or mass exodus. We are experiencing a bit of both today."
I wrote those words as the opening of this semester's first Church History position paper. They are as true today as they were then...even as my phone continued to vibrate, indicating that the 221st General Assembly, the Presbytery of Wabash Valley, and even the New York Times were reporting directly to me the GA's decision to allow teaching elders and sessions the freedom to follow their conscience in whether to perform same-gender marriage in states where it is legal. I've since had moments of misgiving...but only moments. You see, one of the other things I love about our denomination is the Big Tent attitude. In a way, it is an internal application of ecumenism. The Assembly's 61% approval of an authoritative interpretation of W-4.9000 effectively (and immediately) allows pastors to perform same-sex marriages: a) in states where performing same-sex marriage is legal, and b) with the approval of the session, as is required for any marriage performed in the church or other area appropriate for worship. The Assembly also proposed (with 71% approval) a

constitutional amendment to change the definition of marriage from "between a man and a woman" to "between two people, traditionally between a man and woman."[1] For the proposed amendment to be ratified, a majority of presbyteries must approve the change.
I do not intend to expound on my views of same-sex marriage. Instead, I am processing the news of these actions and seeking my own position on whether, and how, the denomination might survive this clash of theology and culture. I have been trying to wrap my head around the combination of these moves, and I believe this is the Big Tent approach at work. By approving the authoritative interpretation, those whose conscience allows them to legally perform a same-gender marriage may do so (with Session approval, which is required for any marriage)[2], while the proposed constitutional amendment gives voice in the change to those presbyteries who disagree. It may be that the majority is not attainable, in which case the authoritative letter would stand, in part as a nod to the changing cultural tide and ministry contexts, and the definition of marriage would stand, at least for the time being, in affirmation of a more traditional biblical interpretation. It may be that the ability of clergy to perform same-gender marriages, and not the constitution's defining words, are sufficient to let the attention-grabbing headlines die down and allow more healing within our Big but tattered Tent.

Touring and serving the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

Moderator's wife to spend term visiting ministries, seeing church in action As moderator of the 221st General Assembly, Heath Rada will be a public figure for the next two years, meeting with pastors and congregations to sort through the issues that created headlines and renewed long-simmering controversies soon after his election in Detroit this summer. For her part, Peggy Rada is approaching this period as an opportunity to take a quieter approach to service. While Heath is presiding at clergy meetings, addressing town halls and fielding questions from the press, Peggy intends to be "reading to children, rocking babies, serving in soup kitchens or clothes closets, any place where I can see the Church in action."

CLERKS' WORKSHOP and RECORDS REVIEW August 23rd is a go...
| | |
To Clerks & Moderators, particularly in North East of Presbytery:
For those of you who have preregistered for the August Clerks' Gatherings & Review-- thank you! We are looking forward to seeing you Saturday, August 23, in Ligonier at 9:00 am (ET). If you haven't registered but plan on attending please register with Gladys@ourpresbytery.org.
If the Gathering from 13 churches in the NW was any indication, we will have a lively discussion in fellowship about ministry in changing times that consider both small and large congregations, the leadership role of ruling elders, and sharing tips for more and more electronic record keeping, as well as the peer-review of congregational minutes.

Tapping Community Funding Resources
Many congregational budgets rely heavily - if not exclusively - on contributions from their membership. This workshop introduces clergy and lay leaders to strategies to look "beyond the pews" to identify new sources of revenue and in-kind support. Partners for Sacred Places executive Gianfranco Grande introduces participants to ways of discovering funding resources outside the congregation.

Congregations and Community Engagement
Congregations can do amazing things when leaders and members put their minds to engaging with their communities. Because the stakes are high, it is important for congregations to be strategic in making choices so that their efforts are thoughtful, sustainable and make a real difference to the neighbors they serve. Author, consultant and national speaker Joy Skjegstad leads this workshop
