Passage to Ponder... Leviticus 19:15-16

You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall  judge your neighbor. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbor:  I am the Lord.

What is the Young Adult Volunteer Program?

a year of service...
Young Adult Volunteers put their faith into action through a year of service in sites around the United States and throughout the world. YAVs serve alongside local partners working in the areas of the world's toughest problems - addressing the root causes of poverty, working for reconciliation in cultures of violence, and sharing the hope of Christ.  What is the YAV experience? YAVs (age 19-30) grow and learn as part of an intentional Christian community, practice living simply, and work for meaningful change in the world.

for a lifetime of change...
YAVs engage in discernment - the practice of deep listening - to find who God is calling them to be. Through spiritual practices, relationships, and living in community, YAVs explore what a life of service can truly mean - not only for a year, but for their entire lives.

  • YAVs rely on your prayers throughout their service. The year is filled with discovery, fears, joys, homesickness, wonder and much more.  They need our support and prayers for the year.
  • Each YAV site has a long-term, called and committed site coordinator. Along with all mission co-workers, they are in need of continual prayer for their lives and ministries

DID YOU KNOW?
From GA Elder Commissioner Judy Friend, First Presbyterian Church, Peru

I notice numbers. They make sense to me. I found many numbers recently at the 221st General Assembly held in Detroit. I find when working with numbers they are logical, decent, and in order. I thought I would share these numbers with you.

  • There were 42 local congregations that hosted us at Sunday services and their members helped answer all the thousand questions about where to go or where to find something.
  • It took 18 people, 10 hours, to cut 18,000 pieces of communion bread.
  • 8 days of worship, meetings and fellowship were scheduled from 8:30 am to 6:30-8:30-9:30 or 11:55 pm.
  • 16 Synods, 172 Presbyteries, and 10,262 congregations were represented.
  • On Wednesday there were 630 commissioners, 15 Theological Advisors, 128 Young Adult Advisors,   4 Missionary Advisors, and 3 Ecumenical Advisors.  There were also hundreds of observers.
  • There were 132 overtures that were approved on a one vote consent.
  • Good news was shared that we have 247 new worshiping communities.
  • On Thursday we had 14,000 people live streaming from their homes.

And planning has already begun for the 222nd.

PRAYERS of the PRESBYTERY
God, fill us with a desire to support those in our communities with the most need, even when doing so requires us to sacrifice. May we turn to you constantly to center us in a spirit of refreshment and abundance, rather than apathy or hardness of heart.

We ask special prayers for Crown Point First Presbyterian Church youth and sponsoring adults as they continue their mission work in St. Louis even after their van was broken into and many things were taken. We give thanks for their safety.

Please pray for all those affected by the Malaysia Airlines tragedy.

We pray for and with Pulaski Presbyterian Church, Winamac who has faithfully served the community and followed you O' Lord.

In your name we pray, Amen!

CLERKS' WORKSHOP and RECORDS REVIEW

To Clerks & Moderators, particularly in North East of Presbytery:

Many of you have pre-registered for the two September Clerks' Gatherings & Review-- thank you!  But there are only two presently indicating attendance for Saturday, August 23, in Ligonier.  As a matter of good stewardship, please register with Gladys@ourpresbytery.org if you plan to attend. Otherwise, the two will be asked to bring their materials and attend at Geneva Center on September 12th, Friday afternoon of our Assembly Retreat.  If the Gathering from 13 churches in the NW was any indication, we will have a lively discussion in fellowship about ministry in changing times that consider both small and large congregations, the leadership role of ruling elders, and sharing tips for more and more electronic record keeping, as well as the peer-review of congregational minutes.

See how starting new worshiping communities are revitalizing congregations.

Worshiping communities use God's gifts to transcend barriers in socially fractured neighborhoods, neighborhoods made up of different racial ethnic backgrounds, creating diverse, unconventional and conventional congregations worshiping as one.
