Passage to Ponder... Habakkuk 2:3-4
For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith.

When an Irresistible Force Collides with an Immovable Object

The Collision of Galileo's Titanic Ego
with the Purblindness of the Roman Catholic Church
by Reverend Thomas E. Smith, Presbyterian Chapel of the Lakes
It has been said by George Bernard Shaw that all progress depends upon the unreasonable person because the reasonable person adapts themselves to the world as they find it, but the unreasonable person demands that the world adapt itself to them instead. Thus, all progress in history depends upon the unreasonable person.
Galileo Galilei certainly fits the billing of being such an unreasonable person for famously persisted to challenge the geocentric cosmology of medieval Christendom. For this he is revered to this day as an icon of intellectual integrity and a martyr on behalf of scientific progress.
But in doing so: 1) he needlessly mocked Pope Urban VIII who had treated him with honor (he had composed verses in his honor) and indulgence (private papal audiences, public accolades, costly gifts, a pension for Galileo's son); 2) he scorned Kepler's elliptical planetary explanation though he was perfectly and resentfully aware of it; 3) he demanded blind assent to a defective Copernican model of circular planetary orbits; and 4) being the infuriating genius that he was, he carried his ridiculous squabble to absolutely idiotic and asinine lengths.
None of which, however, exculpates the Catholic hierarchy for its foolish meddling and/or its authoritarian suppression, but it does help to explain how it was that Galileo Galilei ended his days under ecclesiastical house arrest, comfortably confined to a hillside villa on the outskirts of Florence, Italy.

Maintaining Accurate Membership Rolls Important Work of Sessions
| | |
On Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, clerks and others from thirteen congregations gathered under the hospitality of St. John's United Church in Chesterton to tell of the exciting things happening in their congregations, to explore resources available and conversation about electronic records and electronic meetings, and to exchange for review the minutes and registers of their congregations. Some themes:
- With only four of the congregations led by called-and-installed pastors, most reported that they were in transition. Some had PNCs in place seeking new pastoral leadership, some were congregations with interim pastors, and others were in transition with departing pastors living with pulpit supply or the impending arrival of a new pastor. Ruling elders realized that they are the leaders who step forward to take leadership in congregational life and ongoing efforts of outreach, and are empowered to live out their vows of leading with "energy, intelligence, imagination, and love!"
- Personal relationships and communication are key to living out ministry, from the location congregation to working with neighboring Presbyterian churches and community groups, and reaching others with the Gospel in word and deed. It takes the personal connection.
- Though second best to face-to-face meetings and direct interpersonal communication, email and e-meetings are an essential part of being church in today's rapidly changing American society. So there were discussions of ways to email votes, Facebook connections, GoToMeeting video conferencing, and meetings-by-conference-calls. The balance between honoring our Presbyterian principles of democratic decision-making, assuring that minority voices have a fair opportunity to be heard, then moving forward after a decisions with unity as Body of Christ even with diverse opinions remaining.
- Maintaining accurate membership rolls is important work of Sessions, and recording and reporting by Clerks helps keep the congregation and presbytery in touch with reality, and assures more reliable budgeting based upon per capita contributions. Maintaining connections to members removed from the "active rolls" into other categories assures ongoing pastoral care when desired, without distorting reports of accurate engagement in the congregation's ministry. Several shared their relational processes for reviewing their rolls. Connected to the relationship nature of our denomination and its shared per capita funding was assuring continuity that leads to celebration of ministries of 50 years up to 175 years as Presbyterian congregations.
- Clerks shared several stories of sharing ministry with other congregations, some Presbyterian, some ecumenical.
- Finally, the clerks exchanged their books of minutes and registers and coached one another on options for recording, reporting and preserving their records.
Remaining schedule for annual Gathering of Clerks:
- August 23, 9:00 am EDT in NE Indiana at Ligonier Presbyterian Church.
- September 6, 9:00 am EDT at Elston Presbyterian Church, 375 Elston Rd, Lafayette 47909

Presbyterian News Service
COMPILED BY JERRY L. VAN MARTER
Sixty-eight overtures from presbyteries and synods have qualified for consideration by the 221st General Assembly (2014) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The Assembly runs June 14-21 in Detroit.
This year, for the first time, overtures must have concurrence from one additional presbytery or synod in order to qualify for Assembly consideration. Eight overtures did not receive the required concurrence.
The complete list of overtures - including the order in which they were received by the Office of the General Assembly, the Assembly business item number and Assembly Committee to which they have been assigned, the working title and the presbytery or synod that submitted them: Click Here

Responding to an event like shooting
| | |
By Tom Ehrich
From time to time, traumatic events in society require the congregation to make response, maybe several responses. Last week's shootings at University of California Santa Barbara are such an event. The event itself, like the recent killing of schoolchildren in Connecticut, will touch some of your constituents deeply. Women who have been stalked by men like the shooter, for example, or have been victims of sexual abuse. Parents who have lost children. As a church leader, you can reach out to them specifically, if you know their stories, and perhaps invite them to join you in providing an immediate response to others, such as a prayer vigil.
