Passage to Ponder... Habakkuk 1:3-4
Why do you make me see wrong-doing and look at trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law becomes slack and justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous--therefore judgement comes forth perverted.

Holding fast, moving forward
| | |
by Matthew Schramm, chair of the Presbyterian Mission Agency Board and pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Bay City, Michigan
from Presbyterians Today
Embracing new leaders requires a willingness to follow.
I have a confession to make: I am a "young adult." I use quotation marks because it seems that the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) might be the only one who'd use that term to describe me. I have three children, dental bills, and reading glasses. When I finish a workout, my aching bones tell the truth. Yet, for official Presbyterian purposes, we qualify and elect folks to positions as young adults until they are 35 years old. I'm 34, so by this definition, I'm a young adult.
I hear all the time about how we wish there were more young adults in the church. At the last General Assembly, a commissioner over 50 asked-I'm not kidding-why she wasn't considered a young adult, since she was younger than the median age of Presbyterians (63). When we faced a similar question in our congregation, we decided that if you have kids who are young adults, it means you aren't. But even if we called everyone a young adult, our reality would not change, because real ministry with young adults is about more than deciding who is in and who is out.
Our efforts aren't perfect. But we are making real connections with this generation of young adults, however defined. Though I don't consider myself young anymore, as the first "young adult" elected to serve as the chair of the Presbyterian Mission Agency Board, I can testify that there is no grand conspiracy in the PC(USA) to stifle young adults and emerging leadership. Instead, the church-acting upon the mission agency's directional goal to "engage and join with young adults in reforming the church for Christ's mission"-is looking for voices it can follow into God's future. Exciting ministries of peace and justice, world mission and evangelism, and education and development are drawing in new leaders and expanding our horizons.
Matthew Schramm leads a song at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Bay City, Michigan, where he serves as the congregation's pastor.
During a recent officer training for our congregation, our ruling elders and deacons came to a simple conclusion: leaders are qualified by the fact that others embrace their leadership. We were chosen as leaders because someone, somewhere, thought we might help them hear what the Spirit is saying. So, as we yearn for a new generation of leaders in and for the church, we remember that new leadership is not simply new people to do what we've always done.
Embracing new leaders requires that we be willing to follow and embrace new ideas-holding fast to who we are as disciples of Jesus Christ but willing to go, and willing to let go, where God is "doing a new thing" (Isa. 43:19). We remember, too, that leading voices need listening ears. There is little doubt that those ears-and those voices-will come from all ages and backgrounds, from places tried and true and from where we least expect.
The prophet Joel tells of the day of the Lord, when God's Spirit would be poured on all people so that all flesh would see God's vision for humanity. New visions are not limited to the young or the old. We all are called to find our place in the Holy Spirit's transformation of this world. If we can do that, and do it together, the church will be poised for ministry in the 21st century, for "we all are one in mission, / we all are one in call, / our varied gifts united / by Christ the Lord of all."
Linda Valentine, executive director of the Presbyterian Mission Agency and the author of One in Mission (a monthly column in Presbyterians Today) invited Matthew Schramm to write in her stead for the May young adult special edition.

PRAYERS of the PRESBYTERY
| | |
Lord Jesus, teach me to be generous, to serve you as you deserve: to give without counting the cost, to fight needless of the wounds, to work and not seek for rest, to toil and not seek for reward, save the reward of knowing I am doing your will. - A prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola
Please hold those listed below in your prayers: - Rev. and Mrs. Jeff Deardorff, Range Line Community Presbyterian Church Hebron, on the birth of their granddaughter, Hannah Jane Miller, May 3rd
- Rev. Dedie Kelso and son Scott, First Presbyterian Church South Bend, as Scott had a successful surgery this week
- CRE Ray Fulbright, Memorial Presbyterian Church South Bend, as he gives thanks to God for his successful surgeries and to be a cancer survivor
- Traveling mercies for those attending the May 20th Assembly
- Those who have been involved in the recent storms
- Those who are preparing to attend General Assembly
- Our Mission Co-Workers
We pray for and with Burrows Presbyterian Church who has faithfully served the community and followed you O' Lord, since 1909.
In God's ever loving grace and mercy. Amen!

The Rev. Chaplain John E. "Jack" Hess Honored

Forty Four Years as Volunteer Law Enforcement Chaplain
Receives the International Conference of Police Chaplains
Indiana Region 2014 Wilbert A. Cunningham Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement Chaplaincy It was February, 1970 that John E. "Jack" Hess was Ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament by the Presbytery of Pittsburgh for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) thus having the title Reverend added to his name. It was November of the same year that he was sworn in as Chaplain for the Newark, Ohio Police Department. Jack was introduced to law enforcement chaplaincy while in seminary in Louisville, KY. The Louisville Police Department had a chaplain team that for several events in the city asked for help, held crash courses, and they put volunteers on the streets, in the hospitals, the rumor center, any place they were needed. Chaplain Hess served all those places and happened to be on duty, with several officers, at the city hospital the night an

In 1970 after Newark Ohio Fire Department held the very first public employees strike in the state the City Safety Director was happy to swear him in as Chaplain for Law Enforcement and Fire Service in the city of Newark. He was only in Newark for a short time but was thanked and praised for the work he had done.
In 1972 he went to Randolph County, Winchester, IN and started a chaplaincy program with the Sheriff Office that he maintained until 1983. The events there were very interesting for a rural community: there were murders; members of the Chicago mob in the jail after an attempted armed robbery; had several bank robberies; had a number of tornadoes, one of which took down a school building just five minutes after the students left; and you can add the other common law enforcement events that happen everywhere and are a place for chaplains to be of service to the police officers and the community.
From 1983 to 1988 Chaplain Hess served the Huntington County Sheriff Office, Huntington, IN. This was the first time to add a part of an Interstate as part of the territory to be covered. This of course increased the number of personal injury crashes and death messages to deliver. A number of cold, snowy nights were spent on the road as the crashes were untangled and the bodies removed.

Greetings to Wabash Valley Presbytery! It's my pleasure to be in touch with you and remind you of some of the resources available in World Mission. Here are some items that I hope will be useful to all of you. Please pass this information along to your members and as widely as you can!
- (This one is first because it's time sensitive.) Do you know of a young person (ages 18-30) who might want to spend a year putting their faith in action and serving in mission? Is that young person interested in a career in non-profit work, humanitarian aid, or church service? Then please encourage them to apply to be a Young Adult Volunteer! The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) YAV program is accepting applications for National Service until May 15. www.pcusa.org/yav
- Please remember to lift General Assembly in prayer. GA is the elected government of our denomination, and will be charting the church's course for the next two years. (People sometimes get upset with 'those people in Louisville'-including me-but the national offices are like a bunkhouse. We're just the hired hands! Your GA representatives are the bosses!) GA will meet in Detroit June 14-21. For more information, please go to http://oga.pcusa.org/section/ga/ga221/
- Looking for help on mission involvement? Visit the mission resources webpage of Presbyterian World Mission at www.presbyterianmission.org/missionresources There, you can . . .
- Find tools for planning short term mission trips.
- Find information about forming partnerships between your church and other churches around the world.
- Learn about strategies to address the critical global issues facing World Mission-and all of us, too.

4. Want to deepen your congregation's involvement with God's mission to the ends of the earth? Want to entangle your life with others around the world, who live out their faith in their own culture just as we do in ours? Want to broaden your perspective and enrich your prayer life? Please contact Bruce Whearty for information about how to partner with PC(USA) mission co-workers. bruce.whearty@pcusa.org or 1-800-728-7228, ext. 5157. 5. CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE CONVERSATION...
| | |
"Christian Marriage" was the central topic of prayerful discussion facilitated by 221st GA Commissioner Jill Kitowski last Saturday, hosted by First Presbyterian Church in Michigan City. All nine of us were deeply engaged in listening and sharing insights into Scripture and today's cultural issues surrounding the meaning of Christian marriage. Although there was not one prevailing point of view, the discussion explored personal experiences, cultural stereotypes, differing ways of reading the same Scriptural passages, and our Reformed theology based upon commitment to affirming our unity in declaring Christ is Lord, and living together with differing interpretations.
