COUNCIL DECISIONS AND DISCUSSIONS...
Council moderator Kevin Bowers called the quorum to order at 10 a.m. by reading Philippians 4: 8-9. After focusing on key words like "honorable," "just," " and actions "worthy of praise," Council conversations connected Nelson Mandela with living out (in details and in the big picture) what we do well while listening for the "imaginative impulse of God" that shows the "light of Christ." Kevin led the Advent prayer for "waiting actively" for Christ's coming.
Council decisions and discussions:
- Reviewed the responsibility of Council to "propose missional priorities and goals each year to the first meeting of the Presbytery Assembly" and "oversee and ensure the coordination of the committees, ministry teams, commissions and ministry groups of the presbytery in meeting the missional priorities and goals." Discussion focused on planning conversations for the January Council meeting to integrate the report of the Joshua Journey about key presbytery functions and informing the continuing task force (Jill Kitowski, moderator; David Lawrence, Melissa Pace, John Ritchie, Steve Braden, Bill Hudson, and Carrie Munson) that will prepare recommendations to implement the Joshua Journey work and emerging priorities and goals into presbytery structure, staff and finances.
- After extensive discussion, approved recommendation from Geneva Center Ministry Team that it begin the process of contracting with a "holistic" director for the ministry of GC by proposing a job description and specific financial plan for Council consideration in January. Considerations included meeting immediate needs for ministry programming, entrepreneurial efforts and administrative supervision, balanced with knowing GC financial trends, anticipated costs, and that overall recommendations and decisions about the role of GC in presbytery ministry are yet to come. Consensus: status quo is not an option.
- Approved proposal from Confirmation Retreat Planning Team for allocation of $2,500 to cover the cost of accommodations for four leaders, for supplies and for $50 scholarships in support $125 cost of confirmand participation, and charged Stewardship Ministry Team to include financial support for the Confirmation Retreat in the budget for 2014-15.
- Approved request of New Ministry Development Team to formally terminate the specialized ministry of the former Michiana All Peoples' Church registered with PC(USA). MAPC was previously dissolved as a presbytery-funded probe and continued as an informal fellowship for a time.
- Heard that Commission on Ministry, Commission on Preparation for Ministry and Transformation Ministry Team are in conversation about reallocating traditional functions differently, with COM focus on pastors and pastoral relationships with congregations, CPM guiding the training of ruling elders to be commissioned to pastoral ministry as well as inquirers and candidates for ordination as teaching elders, and TMT counseling the congregational process of mission studies as well as various aspects of congregational ministry and missional renewal.
- Approved grant of $1,500 from fund "07 Council Action" to partner in costs of the ecumenical mission trip in January of Rev. Louis Sandos and his wife Jan along with others from Rossville. Louie and Jan will provide health education and outreach in a community of Haiti that is still rebuilding its church and homes destroyed in the earthquake two years ago.
- Affirmed consensus that there must be high levels of congregational participation in consultations with presbytery discerning their relationship with our denomination.
- Assigned New Ministry Development Team (David Lawrence, moderator) as the group to nurture the specialized ministry of University Church, after hearing report of recent meeting with UC leaders that considered its ministry, its ties to its location, its options, and its commitment to faithful stewardship.

Prayers of the Presbytery
I pray this Advent will be a joyous time for you, marked by celebration and reflection. May the candles and evergreens evoke the hope we have in Jesus Christ. Each day of Advent may you grow in understanding and wonder of His birth. By Christmas day may your hearts overflow with rejoicing and thanksgiving. Peace be with you all.
We ask prayers and support for Jackie Hudson, wife of Rev. Bill Hudson, Merrillville First Presbyterian Church as Jackie provides long distance support to her failing mother Salina Nobil.
Prayers are needed for Rev. Jay & Marcia Cline, as Jay faces major surgery on Thursday, December 12. Jay served Logansport Bethlehem and Royal Center Presbyterian Churches and was a Geneva Center Ministry Team Member before being called to Ossian First Presbyterian Church in Whitewater Valley Presbytery.
May we continue to hold Rev. Jack Hess, Honorably Retired in prayer as he continues to seek medical treatment for an ongoing infection that has now moved into the bone.
May your loving guidance continue to be with First Presbyterian Church, Goshen as they have faithfully served you Lord and your church since March 26, 1853.
In Your name we pray, Amen.
