Are You Spiritually Flat or Fit?
|
Rev. Robert Shaw, Christ Presbyterian Church, Winfield
Recently I heard a strange noise after leaving home to run a few errands. The noise changed as I drove faster, so I stopped and inspected my tires. A bright shiny bolt head protruded from my right rear tire. I dug out the spare tire from the bottom of the trunk and went through the process of changing tires. In my thirty years of driving experience I had replaced a flat tire twice, maybe three times. None-the-less I had quickly had the spare tire mounted and I was ready to drive away. That is until I fully lowered the car's weight on to the spare and I saw that it too was soft. Having only gone a few blocks, I returned home, retrieved the bicycle pump, and inflated the spare tire to its specified pressure. Fortunately the spare held long enough to get the regular tire repaired and re-installed.
Many people go from day to day, thinking they have the resources needed to handle the occasional problems that fall onto the road of life. Most days go fairly well, so checking the status of those rarely needed resources seems silly. Like checking the pressure in my spare tire. The last time I had opened the wheel well (probably to stow my jumper cables) it still looked factory fresh. Some people may think, life is treating them well, and if they ever need God, they know where to look. They may say something like: "We have a Bible around here someplace and my church is around the corner, I can even tell you which Christmas I was there."
As my spare tire needs to be checked, so it is always ready when needed, so too does our spiritual life need to be checked frequently to be fully ready. When my wife calls me on the phone she does not say: "This is Mrs. Shaw. May I please speak with Mr. Shaw?" No! She says, "Hi, it's me," and I know who is on the line just from the sound of her voice. By checking in frequently with God we can similarly recognize God's voice and know that God recognizes our voice as well.
Amazingly regular spiritual exercises such as going to church and reading the Bible, actually makes life more enjoyable and healthier. Worship is more about giving thanks for what God has done, is doing, and will do, than apologizing for what has gone wrong or pleading for God to make everything right again. If daily Bible reading won't fit into your schedule, try listening to a set of CDs. If a Bible study at church would be inconvenient, try talking with a few friends about what you are reading or listening to during lunch. At first your prayers might feel stiff and formal, but after awhile, prayer will seem like talking with a close friend. Having a close friend, especially one in the highest of places, is very good.
If you are already spiritually fit, perhaps you know someone going through life unaware that their connection with God has a slow leak.
Which reminds me, how long has it been since I checked the air in my spare tire?

BETHANY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF LAFAYETTE TO HOST COORDINATOR OF THE PRESBYTERIAN HUNGER PROGRAM -- RUTH FERRELL
|
This Sunday, October 13, Bethany Presbyterian Church in Lafayette, will be hosting Ruth Farrell, Coordinator of the Presbyterian Hunger Program, for its first "Mission Enacted" Sunday. Ruth will be giving the message during worship which starts at 10:45 and will be the speaker for the luncheon from Noon-2:00. The Mission Committee will be serving soup and bread.
Prior to becoming the Coordinator for the Presbyterian Hunger Program, Ruth worked for as a PC(USA) Mission Co-worker in Peru where she helped poor artisans form cooperatives and develop fair trade markets. Before Peru , Ruth was a Mission Co-worker in the Congo working with community development. She currently serves on the boards of Bread for the World, Food Resources Bank and Just Creations. Ruth's husband, Hunter, is the director of World Mission for PC(USA). Ruth will give an update on legislation impacting food insecurity. She will also provide tips on what can be done to engage legislators and other public policy makers. This is your chance to find out what the denomination is doing to change systems both nationally and internationally that breed poverty and injustice.
"Mission Enacted" is an opportunity to deepen your commitment as members of the body of Christ to peacemaking and justice. Throughout the series we will be exploring ways to care for low income families and individuals by advocating for laws and policies that give people a way out of poverty and other dead end situations. It is hoped that this will be an answer to prayer for all those who have felt a tug on their heart to do more to be a force for real and permanent change.

BOUNDARIES AND ETHICS TRAINING
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2013
10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (eastern)
|
The Presbytery's Commission on Ministry has set Saturday, November 16, 2013 for the next Boundaries and Ethics Training. The Commission on Ministry at its September 30 meeting "approved a policy that all members of presbytery, teaching elders and ruling elders, staff, those on pulpit supply list, and those engaged in work with congregations are required to attend Boundaries and Ethics training every three years. Those who attended the sessions offered in 2011 and 2012 will be due to attend a training in 2014 and thereafter. Staff will develop a plan for varied content and different presenters to cover sexual misconduct, financial process, ethics, and other roles concerning appropriate boundaries. COM will report those not fulfilling the training requirement to the Assembly in November (per COM minutes 2012.)"
Carol L. Hornbeck, LMFT: MA will lead the event. She is a counselor with Center Point Counseling, Indianapolis, and has worked for more than 25 years as a consultant and educator to national and regional secular and religious organizations. Carol works with congregations to recognize, respond to and reduce the risk of child sexual abuse and clergy sexual misconduct.
The training will be held at Geneva Center Camp and Conference Center, 5282 N Old US Hwy 31, Rochester. Training materials, snacks and lunch will be provided. The event and lunch registration deadline is Thursday, November 7, by e-mailing gladys@ourpresbytery.org or calling the presbytery office - 574-223-5678.

Glory to God - is HERE!!
|
Presbytery of Wabash Valley advocate for the new hymnal Susan May, FPC Mishawaka shares this:
Glory to God - is HERE!! All across the nation, boxes of red or purple hymnals are being opened and perused, labeled and distributed, combed through and swapped in. Go to the website Presbyterianhymnal.org to see up to date information on the THREE ELECTRONIC VERSIONS being completed. View that "Christmas morning" delight on the faces of Presbyterians everywhere as they welcome this new worship resource. It's a little smaller and lighter, but absolutely packed with music. Never have we had such variety in a hymnal.
PWV's own David Eicher, editor of Glory to God, is now focusing on 7 special celebrations to be held from now through March, spread around the US. Again, visit the website for details.

Free: Up to 190 blue, 1990 Presbyterian hymnals

50 Years of Ministry Celebrated by
Immanuel Presbyterian Church Schererville
| from Rev. Jody Noble
I mmanuel Presbyterian Church celebrated its 50th Anniversary on Sunday, October 6th with 36 children under the age of 14 and 150 adults in worship, Communion, music played in a variety of ways (chimes, vocal and digital piano), and worship leadership help from congregants and Rev. Frank Vardeman. Mrs. Helen Montgomery, wife of IPC's first installed pastor Allen Montgomery, and her two daughters Ruth and Janet traveled from Orlando, FL to be part of the weekend's activities as guests of the congregation. Corrie Smith, daughter of IPC's third installed pastor Steve Smith, also came from Indianapolis where she is now working as an attorney to be part of the celebration. Other presbyterians who joined us included: Rev. Laura Reason, her husband Sam and congregant Arletta Schaeffer (First Highland), congregants Dennis and Sharon Orr (Westminster Munster) and the congregation of First Hammond who sent a beautiful flower arrangement. Following the luncheon at Tiebel's, approximately 40 congregants returned to the church to take everything not bolted down in the Sanctuary to fellowship hall so a six week major renovation of the Sanctuary, kitchenette and main hallway could begin the very next morning. We praise God for his faithfulness and gracious provision for our congregation over these fifty years, and look forward to every experience we will share with God in the days and years to come! |
