Leap of Faith
|
by Rev. Terry McBride, Minister Member at Large, Michiana Youth Ministries
In the summer of 2005, I made a leap of faith and left my position of associate pastor at First Presbyterian Church in South Bend to form Michiana Youth Ministries, an ecumenical not-for-profit organization that sponsors Cursillo-based weekend retreats for senior high youth.
Our program, called L.O.G. (Love Of God) brings youth from many schools and many churches together for a weekend of singing and sharing and praying - an intentional experience of Christian community and love. Youth are usually invited by a friend who has already attended L.O.G. (can you say evangelism?) and afterwards, he or she may choose to serve on a L.O.G. leadership team and invite their own friends.

Each year, MYM partners with Bashor Home present one L.O.G. weekend for the teenagers who are in residential care at the United Methodist Church facility for children and youth in Goshen.
Three years ago, we began offering a new retreat called Connections: An Intimate Look at Relationships: Spiritual, Emotional and Sexual. This event is designed to encourage teenagers to base their friendships and romantic relationships on Christian principals.
Near the end of each summer, youth may participate in a Next Step: Love*4*God retreat. Where L.O.G. encourages kids to embrace the abundant love that God has for them, L*4*G helps youth grow in their love for God by focusing on the spiritual disciplines.
Our newest adventure is Michiana Youth Showcase, a community-wide talent show for senior high youth that doubles as a fundraising and promotional event for MYM.
After twenty years of youth ministry in two local churches, nothing I have found seems to be as successful in making a difference in the lives of teenagers as the L.O.G. program. MYM's motto is reaching youth with the love of God through weekends that can last a lifetime.
I am thankful for the courage and ability to follow God's call on my life - even more for the many friends and colleagues that have affirmed that call and supported me in this mission and ministry.

Prayers of the Presbytery
|

Gracious God, we thank you for showing us love and compassion. May we greet one another with that same love, compassion, and respect.
Please surround Rev. Ralph Smith, Honorably Retired, and his wife, Barbara, in prayer. They have made the decision for Barbara's hospice program care, upon receipt of the painful news of the appearance of a much more aggressive cancer and that treatments nor surgery was an option..
Joy Bailey, First Presbyterian Church Monticello and COM member, requests continued prayers. Following back surgery she has nerve pain, though receiving therapy has helped.
The Rev. Ericka Kilbourne, First Presbyterian Church Michigan City welcomes to be included in our prayers, as she now is on bed rest until their twins arrive.
May we also pause to remember to surround in prayer those however touched from the September 11, 2001 terrible event.
Please hold Harold Gray and family, Center Presbyterian Church Royal Center and former Presbytery of Wabash Valley Treasurer in prayer, on the loss of his son, Richard A. Gray September 4, 2013.
We give thanks for Bethany Presbyterian Church, Lafayette as they have faithfully served your church and ministered to their community since 1952.
Bless us as we seek to love as you loved, we ask this in Jesus Christ, Amen.

From the Center for Congregations:

All congregational leaders hope that their faith lessons make an impact on children and stay with them through their teen and young adult years. In this workshop, Fuller Youth Institute Director Kara Powell explores ways to make faith lessons stick, bringing about powerful changes in not only youth, but in worship, adult education and congregational life.

A Call to Action
Office of the General Assembly
GRADYE PARSONS, Stated Clerk
LOUISVILLE
The Rev. Gradye Parsons, Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), is urging people to personally engage Congress about Syria and to pray.
Hello my name is Gradye Parsons. I'm the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and I come to you out of my concern for Syria and out of the church's concern for Syria, and out of the concern for our government's intervention into that troubled land. The General Assembly meeting in Pittsburgh, Penn. last summer in 2012 made the following statements about this Syrian crisis.
- To support a mediated process of the cessation of violence by all perpetrators,
- To call for outside parties to cease all forms of intervention in Syria,
- To support a necessary and strong role for the United Nations, and
- To refrain from military intervention in Syria
Yesterday I received a letter from the General Secretary of the General Synod of the Synod of Syria and Lebanon, and he writes, "We urge the international powers to refrain from the use of power against Syria, as any strike from the U.S.A. or any other power will only multiply the suffering and the human destruction. We appeal to all who are able, by the name of the God of love, to help bring violence to an end. Help the Syrians to come together and together build a new Syria." Based on his letter and our concern I'm writing as a person, as an individual, to my Congress people - my representative and my two senators - urging them to consider the voices of the people of Syria and the voices of other people about how we should best go about giving our gifts as Americans best intentions of bringing peace to that land and bringing peace that's a long lasting peace; a peace of reconciliation and a peace of long last relationships. I'm also asking you to hear the call from the Pope Francis to make this weekend a special weekend of prayer for the people of Syria, and I'm asking you to join me now in prayer for the people of Syria and for our Congress as we deliberate carefully about the best way to bring hope and peace to that land. Let us pray. Dear Lord we thank you for your gifts that you give to us, the gift of grace and of hope and of reconciliation, and we pray for the people of Syria and we pray for the people in our Congress, that they may deliberate carefully about the best way forward so that peace may come to that troubled land, in Jesus' name, Amen.

PC(USA)'s Syrian partners urge dialogue, not military strikes

Military intervention would have 'detrimental effect' on Christians in Syria, webinar told
Presbyterian News Service
BETHANY DAILY LOUISVILLE
The church in Syria - and churches around the world - has a calling to be a prophetic voice and a witness for peace, Syrian partners said in a webinar with Presbyterian World Mission today (Sept. 10). As the U.S. Congress debates whether to authorize a military strike in Syria, the partners also said that outside interference would cause more problems, especially for Christians in the region. "We don't want to see the future in anyone's hands but our own," said the Rev. Riad Jarjour, a pastor in the National Evangelical Synod of Syria and Lebanon (NESSL) and president of the Forum for Development, Culture and Dialogue. "We are to be saved through our own efforts with our Muslim brothers who are here with us in Syria."

Communion Table
|
Geetingsville Presbyterian Church has a Communion table that has been used in their church
f or many years. Through a donation of talent and skill a new one was constructed. Consequently the old one is no longer used. Before looking at other alternatives, it seemed prudent to see if another church would have a suitable use for it. It could use a little TLC, but it is solid. It has doors on the back with a shelf. The dimensions are: 48.5 inches wide, 23 inches deep and 30 inches high. If interested please contact Kenton Colby, email kcolby@geetel.net or phone at 765-258-3296.
