Invitation from Assembly Moderator Rev. Kevin Bowers to the
September 13-14, 2013 Retreat

Greetings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus the Christ! I pray this communication finds you well and I give thanks for your continuing to give of your time and your talent in service to our Risen Lord through the work of the Presbytery of Wabash Valley.

On September 13th the PWV Assembly will gather for our annual overnight Assembly. Please plan to arrive in Rochester on Friday, September 13th at 5:00, spend the night and participate in the balance of the Assembly through mid-afternoon on Saturday.

We will have as our special guest presenter and preacher Dr. Rodger Nishioka. It may be tempting to forego the Presbytery Assembly to squeeze in a few more last days of summer activities like golfing, fishing, or hiking but you won't want to miss what promises to be an informative and inspiring event. To maximize the time we can make available to Dr. Rodger Nishioka we have condensed the business portion of our meeting to essential business only. This portion of the assembly will take place on Saturday the 14th beginning at 9:30 am and will conclude by lunch. I pray that you will participate in this important work and be open to the movement and direction of God's Holy Spirit as together we discern what is best for the expression of God's church known as PWV.

Some of the items that will be before us at this Assembly are:

  • Hearing more from the Visioning Ministry Team about the Joshua Journey.
  • Renewing the Commissions of the various Commissioned Ruling Elders serving various PWV congregations in Pastoral Leadership positions.
  • Hearing and acting on a report from the Nominating Committee
  • Examining Candidate Sarah Bishop for Ordination and Inquirer Kellie Griffin Tracz for Candidacy.
  • Hearing briefly from the Stewardship Ministry Team.
  • Acknowledging the many years of service of Teaching Elders who have retired since our last Assembly.
  • Perhaps most importantly, worshiping, studying scripture, discerning God's will together, and engaging one another in fellowship beyond our individual congregations

Please remember our procedure for distribution of documents for Assemblies and be sure to have all materials for distribution to the Stated Clerk no later than the 6th of September.

Registration and document information can be accessed by clicking here

I pray God's blessings to be upon each of you and look forward to our being together on the 13th. Grace and peace,

Prayers of the Presbytery

LabCross

Thank you Lord for the realization to show us all your blessings. We are grateful for your giving us your Son that through him we are showered with forgiveness and eternal life. For all our blessings we are truly thankful.

Please hold in prayer Rev. Ralph Smith, honorably retired and his wife, Barbara, during this time of her continued health concerns.

Please continue to hold Rev. Jeff Deardorff, Range Line Community Presbyterian Church, Hebron as he recovers from torn rotator cuff surgery.

We continue to pray for the safety of our mission co-workers and the people of Egypt during such unsettled times.

We give thanks for Central Presbyterian Church, Lafayette as they have faithfully served your church and ministered to their community since 1914.

In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

From the Center for Congregations:

All congregational leaders hope that their faith lessons make an impact on children and stay with them through their teen and young adult years. In this workshop, Fuller Youth Institute Director Kara Powell explores ways to make faith lessons stick, bringing about powerful changes in not only youth, but in worship, adult education and congregational life.

Proclaiming the Good News of God's Peace
2013 Advent Devotional

In July of 2013, over 5000 high school students and leaders from Presbyterian churches across the country descended upon Purdue University for Triennium. In the Prayer Center, participants were asked to reflect on a Biblical text and write a devotion.  The twenty five reflections featured in this years' Advent devotional are a testament to the brightness of PCUSA youth and their leaders.

Presbyterian Mission Agency

Hundreds of Presbyterians in scores of congregations use the new  Engage resource designed to connect evangelism with disciple making. Through Engage, a Charlotte congregation touched people in its community with God's love. In 2011 session leaders began to pray and read Scripture together. Their faith stories came alive, touching 94 people who made professions of faith, 63 becoming new members. The congregation began to engage in new mission and service opportunities in its community.

In times of disaster, the most marginalized are often the last to get help. But by working with local partners in  Haiti, the  Presbyterian Hunger Program, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and the Self-Development of People programs are able to reach those who would otherwise be overlooked.

The Company of New Pastors has touched more than 1,300 congregations. Each year 70 future pastoral leaders in their middler year of seminary covenant to follow classical practices in groups for five years. Of the nearly 400 program graduates, more than 99 percent remain committed to full-time ministry.

Welcoming, nurturing, feeding, and sheltering people in the name of Jesus Christ-this is God's work through the Presbyterian Mission Agency. Whenever and wherever the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is engaged in doing mission and ministry, God is at work in and through Presbyterian Mission as it inspires, equips, and connects Presbyterians in Christ's service.

The Presbyterian Mission Agency is the ministry and mission agency of the PC(USA). In partnership with synods, presbyteries, congregations, Presbyterian-related organizations, and ecumenical partners, Presbyterian Mission strives to offer the world a visible witness of Jesus Christ. Six ministry areas carry out the mission work of the Presbyterian Mission Agency: Compassion, Peace and JusticeEvangelism and Church Growth; Racial Ethnic & Women's Ministries/Presbyterian Women; Theology, Worship and Education; Vocation; and World Mission.

Martin Bucer on the ministry of Deacons
John Calvin's first stay in Geneva ended unhappily: the city council kicked him out because he insisted that the church rather than the civil authorities should have authority over sacramental practice. Calvin's exile from Geneva proved to be a blessing, however, because he was welcomed in Strasbourg where he served as pastor of the French speaking congregation under the guidance of Martin Bucer. Bucer's influence on Calvin was profound, but few of Bucer's writings have been available in English.
