Passage to Ponder - Philippians 3:21
He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself.

REMEMBERING and GIVING BACK
| from Ogden Dunes Community Church & Jason Reese, who grew-up in the Ogden Dunes Church
Last year at a church in Indianapolis, a sermon was given that included the suggestion-- "remember the church that raised you." Jason Reese heard that sermon, took it to heart, and remembered his years at the Ogden Dunes Community Church. Then, he followed through with a letter, a generous donation, and an offer to give a sermon. Below is the inspiring letter.
"Dear Ogden Dunes Presbyterian Church:
Hello. My name is Jason Reese. I currently live in Carmel, Indiana with my wife Jill and our three children. However, I grew up living in Ogden Dues on Cedar Court. I lived there from 1976 to approximately 1997. My Dad is Rod Reese and Mom is Lynne Reese. My sister, Kai Ball, currently lives on Beach Lane with her husband Nate and their three daughters.
I grew up in the Church. I attended Sandpiper Preschool. Mrs. Lavenda was my teacher. It was there that I met many of my first friends. Over time, we attended the Church and we participated in Sunday school, summer vacation bible school, etc. I acted in plays and sang in the children's choir right next to the same pulpit that's probably still there today. From the pews, I recall listening to dozens of sermons from Reverends Butcher, Russell and Becker, and enjoying the wonderful piano music of Mrs. Stinson.
I have enclosed a check for the sum of $10,000 as a contribution to the Church. I would like to support the Church financially while sharing the First Fruits of my family's many blessings. Second, I'd like to offer this as a retroactive tithe to the Church for how much it did and has done for me. After all, it was there that I was introduced to God and his awesome power to love and forgive us. Though my faith lie dormant for a number of years after I left there, the foundation was laid and I am eternally grateful for that. I will always call the Ogden Dunes Presbyterian Church my "home".
May God continue to bless the people of the Church and may the Church always seek to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ."
Prayerfully yours,
Jason R. Reese

Triennium was an amazing experience...
|
from Juliette Landon, First Presbyterian Church Lebanon
Triennium was an amazing experience and I'm am so happy I was able to attend it. I made so many new friends not just from across the state and not even just from across the country but from all over the world. I had an amazing time during small groups bonding and opening up to each other, but a couple things that I will never forget is that everyone there was so happy. No one judged each other or isolated you. You were able to go up to a group of people and just join in their game of frisbee and hang-out with them even though you didn't know them. I grew close with people I came with and then those who I met during the week.
The other thing that stuck with me is the worship services. It was so cool to see over 5,000 teenagers all worshiping and singing to God! I especially loved when we all held candles and also held up our cell phones in the two different worship services. It was so cool to see so many people able to light up one hill or one huge room with their light. Triennium was an amazing experience and an awesome opportunity for me to grow in my faith and be surrounded with love and caring from people who all feel the same as me in their faith.

Belonging to God
Carvalhaes to Lakes and Prairies Synod School: 'Individualism is killing us'
|
Special to Presbyterian News Service
MIKE FERGUSON
Theologian, liturgist, musician and artist Cláudio Carvalhaes, convocation speaker at the 60th Synod of Lakes and Prairies Synod School, had this message for the 616 people gathered July 21-27: "I know how you belong to God by the ways that you belong to each other." "Individualism is killing us," Carvalhaes said. "Am I my brother's keeper? Yes, I am. If you are hungry, I cannot sing a hymn. Unless you are taken care of, I will not sleep at night. Belonging to God," he said, referring to the Synod School theme, "is not easy." Synod School, the last of its kind in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), meets each summer at Buena Vista University. The event included 160 faculty, 174 youth and 149 first-timers. Carvalhaes, who was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is associate professor of worship and liturgy at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He began many of his Synod School talks by strumming his guitar and leading the traditional Mexican folk song, "We Belong to God." Already this month, he's addressed the Presbyterian Youth Triennium at Purdue University. This week, he's set to speak at Big Tent in Louisville, Ky. At Synod School, he took on two topics important to many worshipers -- time and space. It's interesting, he noted, that many Christians dislike it when their Sunday worship service goes five minutes long -- but think nothing of a 30-minute wait at their favorite restaurant following worship.
