All Things New...Look What God Did @SummerCamp.2013
|
by Rev. John Ritchie, First Presbyterian Church, Huntington & Summer Camp Director
What a great camp season we had this year!
Over the 4 weeks of camp we had total of 159 campers.
- 115 campers from 28 Presbytery of Wabash Valley congregations
- 44 campers from 11 other churches, denominations or other affiliations
There are several thank-yous that must be expressed. First, I want to thank the awesome counseling staff. April Million, Molly DeWitt, Rachel Osborn, Kaitlin McDonald, Nick Easley, Keiffer Williams and Chris Wirt you did a fantastic job!
Second, thanks to the wonderful shepherds who brought God's Word to life for the campers and staff. Carrie Munson, Mike Munson, David Smook, David Lawrence, Terri Thorn, Molly Calhoun, Martha McDonald, Darlene Seufert and Bill Hambright you are good and faithful servants!
Next, thanks to the Geneva Center staff for their organization and service in making sure we were fed, housed and taken care of. Finally, thanks to all the parents and church leaders who entrusted us with your children!
This year we declared war on our waste food. After each meal the leftover food was weighed and recorded for each camp. The camp for each week that had the lowest waste per camper per meal won a $20 credit in the camp store for each camper on the last day of camp, and the lowest waste per camper per meal for the summer won a 10% off next year for each camper. Congratulations to the weekly winners: Senior High Classic, Junior/Senior High Adventure, You & Me I and You & Me II. The winners for the summer with .47 ounce per camper per meal were the campers from Jr & Sr High Adventure. Way to go!
If you would like to see pictures and camper posts for each week of camp, like us on Facebook at Geneva Center Summer Camps.
Finally, 2014 plans are already underway. Mark your calendars now and be sure to join us!

The Joshua Journey continues...
On July 12-13, twenty-one teaching and ruling elders gathered at Geneva Center to advance the journey. Participants in this second retreat reviewed the results of the survey, which are posted on the Joshua Journey website, joshuajourney.org. The survey results were very informative and helpful; thanks to all who completed it.
Through some forced-choice exercises, we began refining our focus for the future. We also began the process of choosing a guiding Biblical image. Please note the verb "began." The results of the survey were sufficiently rich that we were not ready to reach conclusions at this retreat. Further processing of the data and results of the retreat will take place before our August retreat, and it is likely that we will try to schedule a fourth retreat this fall (returning to the original design, which called for four retreats). We know that scheduling retreats in the summer is difficult, but scheduling them in the fall is also difficult.
The third Joshua Journey retreat will be held at Geneva Center on August 9-10, and you are invited to attend. Please watch God Calls and your emails for an invitation to register. And please continue to pray for the Joshua Journey process and the future of our presbytery.

New Small Grants Program for PC(USA) Congregations Doing Faith-Based Initiatives to Transform the Food System
|
The Presbyterian Hunger Program is encouraged by the emergence of the many faith-based initiatives sprouting up around the country to bring resilience to our food system, and health to people and God's Creation. These efforts often engage people of all ages, result in greater food security, give people decision-making power over their food, increase healthy eating, create jobs and local economic growth, support local family farmers, use land ecologically, raise awareness about local and global hunger and poverty, and encourage a view of food as sacred and as a right for all people. When done well, such initiatives are wonderful ways to build relationships, community and power. We are eager to support this work as one small way we can help build God's vision of a New Heaven and New Earth.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Grants are for $100-$1,000 with a total of $20,000 available for the year. Turn-around for approved grants will be less than four weeks.
