Passage to Ponder - Philippians 2:21-23
"All of them are seeking their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. But Timothy's worth you know, how like a son with a father he has served with me in the work of the gospel. I hope therefore to send him as soon as I see how things go with me."

you well and I give thanks for your continuing to give of your time and your talent in service to our Risen Lord through the work of the PWV. On May 21stat 10:00 AM the PWV Assembly will gather and hopefully this time weather won't necessitate our postponing the meeting. It is more likely this time of year that any negative impact the weather may have will be in the form of making it hard to be inside doing the work of the Presbytery while it is absolutely gorgeous outside. It may be tempting to forego the Presbytery Assembly for golfing, fishing, or hiking. I won't pray for rain that day, but I do pray you will join us as we have important work before us. I will pray also that our longing to be outside will not inhibit our resolve to be open to the movement and direction of God's Holy Spirit as together we discern what is best for the expression of God's church known as PWV.
Some of the items that will be before us at this Assembly are:
- Hearing more from the Visioning Ministry Team about the Joshua Journey and taking next steps together along this journey of visioning for our Presbytery.
- Discerning whether or not to ratify the Proposed Amendments to the Constitution approved by the 220th General Assembly (2012). Only 3 amendments remain undecided at the denominational level.
- Hearing and acting on a report from the Nominating Committee
- Hearing and acting on the report of the Administrative Commission for Faith, West Lafayette
- Hearing the report of the New Ministry Development Team
- Hearing and acting on a recommendation from Council
- Hearing a variety of other updates on the work of our Presbytery
- Perhaps most importantly, worshiping, studying scripture, discerning God's will together, and engaging one another in fellowship beyond our individual congregations
Please remember our procedure for distribution of documents for Assemblies and be sure to have all materials for distribution to the Stated Clerk no later than the 13th of May.
Registration and document information can be accessed by clicking here.
I pray God's blessings to be upon each of you and look forward to our being together on the 21st. Grace and peace,
Kevin A. Bowers, Moderator

Prayers of the Presbytery
|

O' God we thank you for the newness that only a beautiful spring may be shared by you. We seek your guidance in the newness we know will be found by the Joshua Journey participants gathering this weekend. May they rely on you through prayer to be patient waiting on your perfect timing giving hope through you. We do continue to remember the many in the midst of their struggles only known to you.
Lord we give you thanks for the accomplishments of Bonnie Kern, Presbytery of Wabash Valley IT Consultant, as she graduates this Saturday from Ivy Tech Community College, Summa Cum Laude.
Rev. Louis Sandos, Minister Member Honorably Retired, expressed how blessed he has been in a wide community of praying people. He requests continued prayers as he recovers from surgery to correct a detached retina in his left eye. He expects a second surgery, but his eye needs to heal learning he has a scratched retina on the same eye.
Lord God, we give thanks and praise for Oxford Federated Church as they have faithfully served your church since July 1976 sharing the good news and reaching out to those in need.
In Christ's name, Amen.

How to use Mother's Day to grow your church |
Though it may be a new thought to many, Mother's Day can be a great time to grow your church.

Most church leaders don't think of Mother's Day as a time for potentially g reat church growth-but you should. This is because Mother's Day Sunday is the third highest day for attendance (because of added unchurched people) in North America, running slightly behind Christmas and Easter. Though most churches know this and work hard to make it a special Sunday, many miss significant church growth opportunities for that day - because of the day's exclusive focus on mothers. Following are some ideas on how to change that in positive ways. Continue Reading

Triennium deadlines are fast approaching! Folks in Louisville and at Purdue are working on planning and logistics to make this one of the best Trienniums ever. The speakers that are lined up are really inspiring and the band is a good one.
For our part, there has been a lot of interest from various churches in our presbytery. Anna and I would like to encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity. For youth it is inspirational and faith-building: for adults it is educational and an experience in itself. July 16-20 we will gather at Purdue University to celebrate God's presence in our lives and the world.
The registration deadline for this year's Triennium is May 20 and we would like you to have your application completed and, if not in our hands, on the way so that we can take care of the registrar tasks. If you have any questions please contact Anna Parkinson at Goshen First 574-533-7845 or David Lawrence at Elkhart First 574-264-3109.
The helpful web address is http://presbyterianyouthtriennium.org where you can find all sorts of information.
Shalom, David Lawrence

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we come close to the end of our time here in the United States sharing about our upcoming service as Mission Co-Workers in Egypt, we would like to take a moment to thank many of you for inviting us to come and talk about what it means to partner with us and with Presbyterian World Mission in this adventure.
We have been blessed to meet and get to know so many faithful Presbyterians who are excited about the priorities of World Mission and who are interested in engaging in the work that we will be doing in Egypt. We want to thank the congregations for their hospitality and their interest in this type of mission partnership. We have an official departure date of June 24th, which means that the final countdown has begun. While we are not able to physically come and meet with additional congregations who might want to partner with us in mission, it is not too late to get more information about what this relationship can look like. Rebecca will be at the May 21st Presbytery Assembly meeting with more information about our work and the benefits and possibilities of partnership. She would be happy to connect with more pastors and elders on that day. If you would like to contact us directly in the meantime to be sure to receive that information directly from us, please contact us at kirkpatrickyoder@gmail.com. It has been a gift to be able to connect with so many here in Wabash Valley over the past four months, and we look forward to continuing to help Presbyterians in Wabash Valley to engage with the important work of Presbyterian World Mission. Peace, Rebecca K & Joshua Y (and Owen) *Please note that because of security issues, you should refrain from putting information about Joshua and Rebecca on the web. Please feel encouraged to pass this information on to any others in your congregation who might be interested in connecting with them and with Presbyterian World Mission.

GREAT COMMITTEES
|
by Dan Hotchkiss
In an old cartoon by Charles Addams, a man and his son walk through a park and look at statues, each of which depicts a little clutch of people. "There are no great men, my boy," the father says, "only great committees" (The New Yorker, May 5, 1975).
We laugh. A great committee--how absurd! For quite a while, the venerable committee has been out of style. Books on how to jazz up congregations scorn the committee as a time-wasting fossil of the pre-postmodern era.
And yet, some committees accomplish a great deal--managing existing programs, generating and evaluating new ideas, and making it possible for their parent body to make decisions more wisely. What makes it possible for a committee to be good, or even great?
