Passage to Ponder - Philippians 2:1-11
"If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others."

The Last Supper
through the Disciples' Eyes |
by Richard Bailey, First Presbyterian Church Monticello
Every year since 2008, the First Presbyterian Church
of Monticello has celebrated the events leading to Easter by re-enacting the Last Supper as seen through the eyes of Christ's Apostles.
The cast works hard in studying the painting of Da Vinci's famous depiction of the Last Supper. Each member is in the same pose as in the painting. They are also in similar costumes and beards. They stay frozen until it is their turn to speak.
"Because we're focusing on the human reaction to Christ's statement, the chair where Jesus would have sat is empty," says Pete Shields, who brought the production from his former church near Chicago. Pete was involved in the re-enactment for 23 years before moving to Monticello. Pete says, "We come to the church as members of the congregation but for a short time we are transported to the twelve who walked with Jesus."
The presentation takes place during a traditional Maundy Thursday service. The service begins with a call to worship, hymns and prayers. Then Da Vinci's painting comes to life. The story begins with Caiaphas and Annas convincing a somewhat reluctant Judas to betray Christ. It then proceeds to vignettes of each disciple explaining his background, motivations, fears and beliefs.
As the re-enactment begins, the disciples, played by members of the church, are at the table where the last supper was served. Jesus has just told them that one of them will betray him. The disciples react in different ways depending on their character and as depicted in Leonardo Da Vinci's famous painting. They respond with the feelings that each Disciple felt about Jesus and their experience with him. Producer Jody Headdy says that each year brings a slightly different twist to the production. "Even people who've attended for years find something new to enthrall and inspire them. And of course everyone is invited."
After the Last Supper presentation, the service ends with the Sacramental Elements being taken off the table and carried into the chapel. All the Apostles leave, looking back at the cross in the sanctuary. The congregation follows them into the chapel where communion is served.
The 8 p.m. Maundy Thursday presentation will be held at the church, located at 104 N. Illinois Street in Monticello, with the Rev. Thomas G. Albaum officiating. For more information, you can reach the church at 574-583-5787 or visit their website at http://www.monticellofpc.org.
