We have to start at birth.
Studies have shown that parents and other caregivers can make an immediate and long-lasting impact on a child's early development.  Because 95% of a child's brain development occurs by age five, there is a great opportunity to positively impact this important phase.  Activities such as reading to a baby, participating in play groups and parenting classes all make a difference.

Strong early development positively affects a child's ability to master key skills before starting kindergarten. Studies have shown that kindergarten readiness is critical to early reading proficiency and confidence.

Books can be dropped off at UNR's Thompson Bldg., 101E or at the Knowledge Center, where the collection barrel will be housed. Donations from outside the University are welcome and needed.

Books Needed for Alternative Spring Break

Books will be collected from March 2-6th on the UNR Campus to be used with the UNR Alternative Spring Break project.  UNR students will be recruited to assemble and install 6 Little Free Libraries at rural sites in Northern Nevada to help promote the love of reading and literacy, and to help develop stronger connections in our communities.

Communities are partnering with UNR on the install and placement of the Little Free Libraries in Storey, Churchill, and Washoe counties.

The biggest need right now is books at the K-3 reading level so the Little Free Libraries can be installed pre-stocked.

VISTA Volunteers: 50 Years of Taking on Poverty

What do more than 80 United Ways and the 36th President of the United States have in common?  A not-so-secret weapon for combating poverty: the AmeriCorps Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) program. President Lyndon B. Johnson initiated the VISTA program in 1965 as a domestic complement to the Peace Corps to combat poverty through national service.  Since then, the program has recruited and mobilized 190,000 full-time, year-long volunteers to serve with organizations on capacity-building projects addressing poverty.

United Way's Born Learning program began with the help of VISTA volunteers

United Way is committed to making our community a better place. Bring your ideas, skills and expertise.  Please join us!
