Thank You

A big THANK YOU to Madeline and Rick Silva for installing identifying labels under our ministers' portraits in the Bancroft Room. This is the finishing touch on a major summer project, in which the portraits were cleaned and stabilized, the Bancroft room was painted, and the portraits rehung (including our 11th Minister, the Rev. Tom Schade). Thank you again to the team that worked on the whole project: Wendy Innis, Diane Mirick and Madeline Silva-and to our staff who did the painting, Sextons Bob Shaw and Sten Gustavson.

A conversation about what matters
Sunday, March 12, 12-2:30 p.m.
In the Landers Room

Parents, teachers, members of the congregation at large are invited to come together to consider the fundamental goals and highest priorities of our ministry to and with children and youth. How best do we fashion a young people's program that supports and affirms the child and the family, the teacher volunteers, that instills the values of our liberal faith, offers opportunities for peacemaking, justice education/action, connections, and spiritual nourishment? Especially when we are all too darn busy. Come, gather together. Let's see what matters. To you. To your children. To our faith.

Childcare will be available by advance reservation. Email Deborah at   dlevering@firstunitarian.com

"I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do."  Edward Everett Hale

A dozen volunteers helped out at IHN the week of February 12-19th.  Linda Carney and Linda Wyatt brought a meal to share. Marc Deshaies, Elizabeth Mullaney, Pat Curtis and three volunteers from other congregations did the overnights. Jean McInerney, Mary Newth, Laura and Hazel Kirshenbaum,  and Kate Sheehan came in for an evening shift, and Deb Levering covered two. I was there a number of evenings for support and training, and also brought in a meal. Our congregation was generous in providing money to cover expenses for the week, and I have $100 extra which will be kept toward our next volunteer week, the third week of August.  A special note of thanks to  Hari Kirin Kaur Khalsa, whose yoga class donated one week of proceeds to the shelter as well.
The work we do at the Interfaith Hospitality Network provides relief to six families in need.  It can be challenging for lots of reasons.  It helps me to remember the quote from Edward Everett Hale at the top of this note, who was the Unitarian minister of the Unity Church in Worcester in 1846. (Unity Church was an offshoot of First Unitarian. It was formed by a group of abolitionists who decided to leave First U.  About 75 years later, Unity Church merged back with First U., allowing for  the large addition of the dining hall and kitchen and the auditorium of Unity Hall to be built).
I appreciate the work and the donations of so many in our congregation.
Thank you.

First Unitarian Sunday Readers Sign Up

Rev. Sarah Stewart is inviting members and friends to sign up to read the scripture passage during the service every Sunday. That same person (with their family, if they want) could light the chalice at the beginning of the service. Sign up to be the reader on an upcoming Sunday here or at the Welcome table in the Bancroft Room after services. (Note: You do not have to register for a SignUpGenius account to sign up to be a Sunday Reader, just skip that question in the sign-up process.)
