First Unitarian at Worcester Pride
Once again, with the help of the Social Justice Committee, First Unitarian is preparing to participate in Worcester Pride which is on Saturday, September 10, 2016. There is overlap with the yard sale, but come make a day of it. March in the Parade or staff the booth on the Commons and then go shop at the Yard Sale! We will be organizing marchers, a cheering squad on the steps of the church and hosting a booth on the commons. You will soon get information on how to sign up for any or all of the activities, so think about what you can do to make this a success. There will be a need to have two "somewhat tall" people to set up and take down the canopy tent on the Commons. Please contact Jeanine Beratta at [email protected] if you have questions. Also, please contact Jeanine if there is anyone out there who knows how to design a silk screen for Tshirts and would be interested in helping.
Worcester Pride Week info here.
Yard Sale, Saturday, September 10 We need LOTS of gently-used stuff! Pick up a box this Sunday at Church and bring it back full of smaller stuff. And bring in bigger stuff, too. We're collecting treasures now, and will store them until the yard sale. Click here for more info.
A note of thanks.
First Unitarian covered at the Interfaith Hospitality Shelter (IHN) the week of August 14-21. Many people in the congregation contributed in helping out that week, including 17 members of our congregation who took shifts. I also had made an appeal for help in covering our expenditures for the week, which was echoed by Marc Deshaies and Seth Popinchalk on weeks I was not present at church. The generosity of our congregation floored me! I had explained that on the weeks we cover the shifts, IHN also asks that we help to defray the costs of groceries and supplies, usually about $250-$300. By the week of the 14th, $624 had been collected. This covers the August week, as well as our upcoming week, October 16-23. This is wonderful, so helpful, and so appreciated. Thanks to all who contributed to the success of the week.
IHN has a week coming up that is not covered by any congregation. If there are people who would like to help out as a new volunteer, or people who have had the experience of helping out before, the week of September 4-11 has a number of openings for either the evening (dinner-time) or overnight shifts. Please ask me about it, or contact Joanne Alley, the director of IHN, at 508-755-2212, or at [email protected].
Thanks again to all who contributed time or money for helping out some families in our community who have fallen on hard times.
