Sermon: "The Victory of Love"
Preaching: The Rev. Sarah Stewart
During this week of Yom Kippur, we reflect on love, loss and forgiveness. The love we show one another, and the greater Love we know in our hearts, help us to cherish each other and forgive each other. We have one precious life to learn to love each other as God loves us.

The Festival Choir under the direction of Will Sherwood, joined by Jim Kassal, bassoon, will be singing:
Prayer of Being - Mark Hayes
Abide with Me - arr. Monk
The Lord Is My Shepherd - Thomas Matthews (Jean Gough, soprano)

Ray Bauwens will sing the moving solo: "Eil Male Rachamin" (Memorial Amen)
Jim Kassal will be playing a bassoon concerto for the prelude.

The Stewardship Fair is Coming!
October 4, 2014 in Unity Hall Following the Worship Service
This is your opportunity to find out what is happening within the church and
Stewardship Fair First Unitarian Worcester UUA
to connect with the First Unitarian community. More than two dozen groups will be hosting tables at the 2015 Stewardship Fair.  Social groups, church governance committees, religious education, social justice, and the music program will all be available for you to connect with. Join us on Sunday, October 4 after the service to find out where your time and talents are needed at First U.
Sign Up to Be a Worship Reader
Rev. Stewart is  inviting members and friends to sign up to read the scripture passage during the service every Sunday. That same person (with their family, if they want) could light the chalice at the beginning of the service. Sign up to be the reader on an upcoming Sunday here or at the Welcome table in the sanctuary after September's services. I hope to have you participating in the service every Sunday.

Logging the Voyage - journaling through the personal essay
wire-bound-pad.jpg
What's the difference between a diary and a journal? When people read the story of your life, will they care that you bought groceries today and don't like the price of spinach? Or will they want the stories that make you who you are, powerfully told. We'll explore this idea, trying to learn a bit about powerful writing. We'll practice as we go, and (constructively) criticize and cheer each other on, using online collaboration tools, and live readings. Led by Sten Gustavson. Mondays, next session October 5, number of sessions to be determined.
Race and Racism Discussion Series in the Landers Room
This week: "The Blues Eye" by Toni Morrison
Rev. Stewart's Adult Faith Development offering this year is a book and
Rev. Sarah Stewart
movie discussion group on race and racism. Our first meeting is Mon. Sep. 28 at 7 p.m., to discuss "The Bluest Eye" by Toni Morrison. Set in an Ohio city between the Great Depression and the Civil Rights movement, the novel is an exploration of racism, family, self-respect and beauty in a community of African-American children and adults. Please  join us for this first installment of our discussion group. Click here for more info and the discussion schedule.

New Members Meeting
Sunday, October 4, 9:00am - 10:00am
Join Rev. Sarah Stewart and lay leaders of First Unitarian to explore
membership in the church. If you're ready to join, please bring a completed new member form and completed pledge card with you. You'll also have the chance to fill these out at the meeting. We'll talk about Unitarian Universalism, the meaning of membership, and have the chance to officially sign the book! A similar new member meeting will be held on every first Sunday of the month at 9 a.m. in the Chapel. New members will be welcomed during the last Sunday service of each month.

Worship Arts Collaborative!
Come to the inaugural meeting of the Worship Arts Collabortive!

We are looking for people who love art and want to explore arts in worship-all levels of expertise are welcome. At this first meeting, we'll explore the role of arts in our spiritual lives, and we'll look at some projects for the Chanukah/Advent/Christmas season. Tuesday, October 6 in the Chapel from 6:30 to 8:30. All ages welcome (children with a parent, please). Snacks will be provided.

Hospitality & Membership
"Smiling is the way the soul says hello." Jarod Kintz

Smiling is the signal we are recognized.  It is also free and usually painless.
Sunday Greeters First Unitarian Worcester UUA
If you have a smile to give, sign up at the Welcome Table to be a greeter on Sunday mornings.

Name Tags are the finishing touch in classy attire.  If you have one, look for it on one of the name tag racks or on the Welcome Table.  If you need one, stop by after worship.

If you need to stretch your legs during the service, be an usher.  They get to walk around and collect the offering while smiling.  Again, the Welcome Table.

Do you like nibble on something delectable with your coffee after worship?  Most of us do.  Please bring refreshments to share.  It doesn't have to be fancy.

Finally, before and after the service, seek out someone you haven't spoken to and say hello.   It's easy.

HYGIENE KIT Project for
Pledge Day, October 3, 2015
We at First Unitarian are planning a service project of making HYGIENE KITS for refugee children/families facing disaster or crisis.  Each kit contains a toothbrush, a bar of soap, a hand towel and a fingernail clipper.  The kits are packaged and distributed in a useful, double-drawstring cloth bag (11" x 16").  We will be sewing the bags and collecting the contents on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 11 AM to 3 PM.  They will be distributed by Mennonite Central Committee, a non-profit agency providing relief, service, and peace services to people facing disaster or crisis. Get the details here.
Looking for Artists to Exhibit Their Work
We are looking for are looking for artists who would like to exhibit their work in our Chapel.  This offer to exhibit is open to anyone  in the Worcester
art auction First Unitarian Church Worcester UUA
community.

Exhibits are usually left up for 8 to 10 weeks, but we are flexible.  The exhibit space is large, so we can accommodate large pieces or many small items.

The Chapel has a new gallery hanging system that makes hanging the art very easy, but the hanging system works best with framed or matted art that has a wire in the back.  Paintings, prints, photography, and even fabric art would be welcomed.

In November we will have an exhibit provided by the Seven Hills Camera Club.

If you know of an artist who might be interested, please have them contact Ken Mandile at  kmandile@swissturn.com or 774-239-9728.
