Sermon: "Stay Our Minds on Freedom"
Preaching: The Rev. Sarah Stewart
Slavery is not a thing of the past, or even a problem only found in other parts of the world. Enslaved people live in America and produce goods overseas which we use here. We will learn more about this scourge and what we can do about it. This sermon topic was selected by Gini Johnson, who won it at the 2015 First Unitarian Auction.

Sign Up to Be a Worship Reader
Rev. Stewart is  inviting members and friends to sign up to read the scripture passage during the service every Sunday. That same person (with their family, if they want) could light the chalice at the beginning of the service. Sign up to be the reader on an upcoming Sunday here or at the Welcome table in the sanctuary after September's services. I hope to have you participating in the service every Sunday.

Logging the Voyage - journaling through the personal essay
wire-bound-pad.jpg
What's the difference between a diary and a journal? When people read the story of your life, will they care that you bought groceries today and don't like the price of spinach? Or will they want the stories that make you who you are, powerfully told. We'll explore this idea, trying to learn a bit about powerful writing. We'll practice as we go, and (constructively) criticize and cheer each other on, using online collaboration tools, and live readings. Led by Sten Gustavson. Mondays, starting September 21, 12 sessions in the Bancroft Room.
Sunday Lecture@Noon - Next Sunday After Worship
Frank Kartheiser, Volunteer Needs and Opportunities with Worcester Interfaith
Our first Sunday Lecture@Noon this fall will be held in the chapel on Sunday September 27.  Frank Kartheiser will give a brief overview of Worcester Interfaith, note its current programs and suggest the various ways our congregation might become more engaged with its work.

Frank Kartheiser is the Lead Organizer of Worcester Interfaith, a Broad
Based Community Organization founded in 1993. The organization has over 20 dues-paying, member institutions that include religious congregations and neighborhood organizations. A graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, Mr. Kartheiser is the Director of Relational Spirituality for YOU Inc and co-founder of the Mustard Seed Catholic Worker House of Hospitality.
50-50 Offering
Nominations for Our 50/50 Program
Again this year our Social
Justice Committee is coordinating our 50-50 donation program, featuring a different local organization each month for 9 months, this October through next June.  One Sunday each month, we will send half of our Sunday plate collection to the featured organization for that month.
The Social Justice Committee is now soliciting nominations of local organizations to participate in our 50-50 donation program in the coming church year.  If you would like to nominate a local charitable organization, please fill the online form found here or fill out a paper form found at the Welcome Table and send the form to the church office, or hand it to Eileen McMahon or Peggy Middaugh or Paul Ropp.
Hospitality & Membership
"Smiling is the way the soul says hello." Jarod Kintz

Smiling is the signal we are recognized.  It is also free and usually painless.
Sunday Greeters First Unitarian Worcester UUA
If you have a smile to give, sign up at the Welcome Table to be a greeter on Sunday mornings.

Name Tags are the finishing touch in classy attire.  If you have one, look for it on one of the name tag racks or on the Welcome Table.  If you need one, stop by after worship.

If you need to stretch your legs during the service, be an usher.  They get to walk around and collect the offering while smiling.  Again, the Welcome Table.

Do you like nibble on something delectable with your coffee after worship?  Most of us do.  Please bring refreshments to share.  It doesn't have to be fancy.

Finally, before and after the service, seek out someone you haven't spoken to and say hello.   It's easy.
Tickets Available
Ken and Diane Mandile have 8 tickets available at no charge to a dinner and

HYGIENE KIT Project for
Pledge Day, October 3, 2015
We at First Unitarian are planning a service project of making HYGIENE KITS for refugee children/families facing disaster or crisis.  Each kit contains a toothbrush, a bar of soap, a hand towel and a fingernail clipper.  The kits are packaged and distributed in a useful, double-drawstring cloth bag (11" x 16").  We will be sewing the bags and collecting the contents on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 11 AM to 3 PM.  They will be distributed by Mennonite Central Committee, a non-profit agency providing relief, service, and peace services to people facing disaster or crisis. Get the details here.
Looking for Artists to Exhibit Their Work
We are looking for are looking for artists who would like to exhibit their work in our Chapel.  This offer to exhibit is open to anyone  in the Worcester
art auction First Unitarian Church Worcester UUA
community.

Exhibits are usually left up for 8 to 10 weeks, but we are flexible.  The exhibit space is large, so we can accommodate large pieces or many small items.

The Chapel has a new gallery hanging system that makes hanging the art very easy, but the hanging system works best with framed or matted art that has a wire in the back.  Paintings, prints, photography, and even fabric art would be welcomed.

In November we will have an exhibit provided by the Seven Hills Camera Club.

If you know of an artist who might be interested, please have them contact Ken Mandile at  kmandile@swissturn.com or 774-239-9728.
