Electronics Recycling and Radio Show Intro Recording
We are providing a wide range of activities on Pledge Day. Over the next
Stewardship First Unitarian Worcester UUA
few weeks, we will focus on one or two in each newsletter article we publish.  This week, the focus is on Electronics Recycling, and a new activity: Record an Intro to the First U Radio Show.

Electronics Recycling

Jeanine Beratta has made arrangements for a truck to be on hand from Northeast Computer Recycling (NECR) to accept, free of charge, a wide range of electronics items , including computers, printers, digital cameras, and LCD monitors.  For a complete list of items, please click here to go to the Stewardship Blog.

So, collect all your old and unused electronics and bring them to church between 8 am and Noon on Pledge Day. Jeanine and her crew will help you load your stuff onto the truck.

Record an Introduction to the First U Radio Show

Help Susan Anderson with First Unitarian's radio show!  She is looking for people to record the "Intro" for upcoming shows, reading a brief script that introduces the church and leads in to the broadcast.  No prior experience is necessary, just a few minutes to practice and read while she records you.  We'll let you know if your recording is used in a broadcast so you can listen in!  Specific times for this activity will be published soon.

And remember, there will be plenty of food!  Enjoy a light breakfast provided by the Stewardship Committee, from 8 am to 10 am; a special omelet brunch lovingly prepared by members of the UU Sisterhood, from 10 am to 1 pm. And finally a special chili dinner from 5:30 to 7 pm.

It all begins, though, with submitting your generous pledge on or before Pledge Day and getting your special "I Pledged" name tag (available on Pledge Day).

As a special incentive, every pledge made on or before Pledge Day will be entered into a raffle for an iPad Mini!

The complete Pledge Day schedule, along with pledging information and a Giving Guide, are on line here.

Chili Dinner
Pledge Day Chili Cook-Off

The LLPC is sponsoring a Chili Cook-Off Dinner as part of the Pledge Day activities on Saturday, October 3.  Do you have a favorite chili recipe that you would like to put to the test?  If you are interested in entering your chili into the cook-off, email Ken Mandile at kmandile@swissturn.com

Each entrant will provide one crockpot of chili. From 5:30pm to 6:30pm, First U members will sample the various chili entries and vote on their favorites.  We'll have plenty of chili, corn bread, and deserts available, so bring the whole family and then stick around for the talent show.

50-50 Donation Program

Again this year our Social Justice Committee is coordinating our 50-50 donation program, featuring a different local organization each month for 9 months, this October through next June.  One Sunday each month, we will send half of our Sunday plate collection to the featured organization for that month.  The Social Justice Committee is now soliciting nominations of local organizations to participate in our 50-50 donation program in the coming church year.  If you would like to nominate a local charitable organization, please fill the online form found  here, or fill out a paper form found at the Welcome Table  and send the form to the church office, or hand it to Eileen McMahon or Peggy Middaugh or Paul Ropp.

UU Sisterhood

Monthly Potluck
September 18th
Summer is winding down and it's time to get back to our regular activities. Our Sisterhood in-gathering meeting is just around the corner. As we do every year, we will use this meeting to catch up with old friends, reminisce about our summer activities and most importantly get to the task of setting our calendar for the year. Many of you have probably sent ideas to Madeline already and she will let us know what those were. In addition, we will be rounding out the calendar with ideas from the floor.  Please come to share your good ideas.

We will meet on Friday September 18th.    People begin to gather around 6:00pm  and dinner is served at 6:30pm.  Please bring a dish to share.  All women of the church are welcome to attend.

Take Me to the Water
First Unitarian Worcester UUA Choir 91315

Enjoyed By All
We welcomed back the Festival Choir to launch the Fall Season of services at 1st U.  Of particular note was the choir's anthem "Take Me to the Water" conducted by Jerry Bellows, and accompanied by James Haupt (piano),  Becky Spanagel (keyboard bass), and Bob Gordon (percussion).
It was great having the choir back and rattling those rafters!
Thank you to all the singers and musicians!

HYGIENE KIT Project for
Pledge Day, October 3, 2015
We at First Unitarian are planning a service project of making HYGIENE KITS for refugee children/families facing disaster or crisis.  Each kit contains a toothbrush, a bar of soap, a hand towel and a fingernail clipper.  The kits are packaged and distributed in a useful, double-drawstring cloth bag (11" x 16").  We will be sewing the bags and collecting the contents on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 11 AM to 3 PM.  They will be distributed by Mennonite Central Committee, a non-profit agency providing relief, service, and peace services to people facing disaster or crisis.
Last year MCC distributed 45,167 hygiene kits to people in Jordan, Syria, Honduras, Lebanon, Haiti, Ukraine, Iraq, the U.S and other countries. See
http://mcc.org/get-involved/kits   There is still an urgent need for hygiene kits to offer comfort to families in crisis around the world.  This is a great project to do with children!

Please bring kit contents (dark-colored hand towel, 1 toothbrush, 1 bar bath soap, 1 nail clipper, all in original packaging) to the Bancroft Room Kit Display Board anytime from now until October 3.  Also bring lengths of material (unfinished size is 38" x 12 ½") for sewing the cloth bags on October 3rd.  You may also bring $12, if you prefer, and we will shop for the kit contents.  The Hygiene Kits are a tangible way to share God's love and compassion, reminding people that they are not forgotten.

Thank You!

Looking for Artists to Exhibit Their Work
We are looking for are looking for artists who would like to exhibit their work in our Chapel.  This offer to exhibit is open to anyone  in the Worcester
art auction First Unitarian Church Worcester UUA
community.

Exhibits are usually left up for 8 to 10 weeks, but we are flexible.  The exhibit space is large, so we can accommodate large pieces or many small items.

The Chapel has a new gallery hanging system that makes hanging the art very easy, but the hanging system works best with framed or matted art that has a wire in the back.  Paintings, prints, photography, and even fabric art would be welcomed.

In November we will have an exhibit provided by the Seven Hills Camera Club.

If you know of an artist who might be interested, please have them contact Ken Mandile at  kmandile@swissturn.com or 774-239-9728.
Lodging Needed
Thomas Conroy is a Unitarian Universalist musician looking for a good home. Thomas is coming to Worcester to direct a musical at Clark University and needs a place to stay for the fall semester. He has good references from his minister in Muncie, Indiana, where he was the accompanist. He can't pay for lodging but is willing to offer musical lessons in return. If you can help Thomas, please contact him directly at  tconroymusic@gmail.com.
