Summer Garden Tours
|
|
|
Many people have asked to have these continue this year; they were so much fun the last few years, and we thank Kris Johnson still for initiating and organizing them. This year they will be 4 to 6 pm, when gardens aren't quite to wilted-should be really lovely and a nice chance for community. They'll occur any week it isn't storming. Our hosts so far include:
June 14, Nancy Riggs
June 21, Diane Mandile
July 12, Marjorie Connelly
July 19, Mary McALister
July 26, The Miricks
August 30, Kate O'Dell
So there are several open Sundays for this fun event-you don't have to have a perfect garden; it mostly about being together outside. Please email Christine Samuelson (csamuelson@hammondre.com), Mary McAlister (maryalmc@gmail.com), or Kate O'Dell (odellkk@gmail.com) to sign up, and hope to see you June 14th!

YRU2 Ends Their Year with a Pow Wow
|
by Lesa McWalters, Youth Ministries Coordinator
|
|
Sunday, May 31st, the youth in YRU2 and their advisors ended our church-year together by attending a local Pow Wow in Rutland, MA. Since the youth had visited the Poospatuck Indian Reservation in April for their Mission Trip, they have been interested in the Native American culture, and we all agreed that witnessing (and participating in) a pow wow would be a great way to end our year together.
The day was filled with music, singing, drum bands, hand-crafted items for sale, and authentic food, such as bison burgers and Indian tacos. The highlight was the Grand Entry, when all the tribes gathered in their regalia and performed the sacred dance to the drum bands and singers in the pow wow circle. Indians who had served in the armed services were honored, and a special prayer for the beauty of the Earth and the gift of life was shared in both the native language and in English. Tee pee tours were offered, and we learned about the difference between a tee pee and a wigwam, and how all Indians honor the animals that they hunt by using every part of the animal for different purposes.
During the open-circle dances, some of our youth and advisors participated in joining with the Indians in dancing to the drum bands. It was a memorable day, filled with spirituality, curiosity, respect, enlightenment, and wonder.
our cultural contribution to the city.
