We have all heard the saying "laughter is the best medicine" - and there is more than a nugget of truth in it. Laughter has a significant effect on our bodies and our minds. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins and serotonin, which creates feelings of happiness, love, and euphoria.  Laughter also initiates a psychological phenomenon called "facial feedback," whereby a certain expression can cause a person to have the corresponding emotion. Just the simple act of smiling from laughing can improve one's mood.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Catherine McGinty, NP

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month, so we wanted to take the time to go over this tough issue that far too many women encounter. Many people think of sexual assault as "rape," but what most people think of as rape is only just one form of sexual assault. Sexual assault comprises of sexual acts performed by one person on another without consent through intimidation or force. This can happen when someone is cognizant, or if the victim is passed out, drunk, or on drugs and not able to make decisions for herself. People can be sexually assaulted by strangers or people they know, such as family members.

Have you ever had a really stressful day at work, then decided to take a jog, attend your yoga or kickboxing class, or even go lift some weights at the gym? Chances are you felt much better afterwards, and the stress from earlier that day melted away. This is because exercise actually has both short term and long term effects on mood. Research shows that moderate exercise enhances mood within just 5 minutes of activity.

Patient Portal Update

You can now view statements and pay bills on the patient portal by clicking "Latest Statement."

We know so much about our patients and we love to see familiar faces (although preferably for well-visits), but do you ever wonder about who is helping you book your follow-ups or draw your blood? If you do want to know more about our team, we are introducing a new 'Meet the staff' section! We hope that getting a little more familiar with the people you see in our office will make you more comfortable and confident with the care you receive through us.

1) What does 'wellness' mean to you?
Wellness to me is all about being in good mental and physical health. It's a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices towards a healthy and fulfilling life.

2) How do you feel about healthcare in the U.S. and your role within the system?
I wish I was able to help more patients get the treatment that they need, but unfortunately the insurance companies are the final rulers as how patients receive their treatment.

3) What health advice do you promote to your family?
I currently promote a very healthy lifestyle to my family. As a family we are  trying to be healthy together. We eat healthier, we exercise together. We make overall better choices together.

4) Are there any lifestyle changes that have positively or negatively affected your health?
Recently I lost my father whose health was not good only due to him not taking care of himself. With him passing away at 61 years of age, I was already following in his footsteps as far as health was concerned and I knew I had to make changes and fast.

5) What activities do you participate in? What do you you do to help you feel healthy?
I am currently in herbalife which is amazing. I have lost 20lbs in a month and feel great. I exercise often throughout the week including going to the gym.

6) What advice do you have for patients seeking to optimize their health?
If any patient is seeking to optimize her health I say go for it. We only get to live one life so we better make the best out of our minds and body. I would be more than happy to help any patient change her lifestyle.
