"What I have witnessed over the last 15 years leaves me in awe of the body's healing wisdom. It seems nothing is incurable with the use of a few simple tools, the willingness to take an honest look at one's life, and the courage to change. The path of wholeness is our birthright."

YOGA PHILOSOPHY
Dhyana
Each of the eight limbs of yoga is interconnected.  All parts combine together in order to encourage a deeper understanding of your personal journey along the path of your yoga practice.  Dhyana or meditation is so closely related to the previous limb: dharana, concentration.  They co-exist and strengthen each other in practice and theory.  Wheredharana practices one-pointed attention, dhyana is a state of being aware without focus.  In other words, you train the mind to become so quiet that it produces no thought, even though the body may still be doing some sort of action.

A great example of the 8 limbs of yoga (especially of the last few limbs we have discussed) is the Yoga Championships.  Restraints (yamas), observances (niyamas), postures (asana), breath (pranayama), sensory withdrawl (pratyahara), concentration (dharana), and meditation (dhyana) are all demonstrated in each of the participants 3 minute routine.  Watch the championships live this weekend and see yogis of varying ages and abilities inspire all to do your best in every aspect of yoga practice.  You'll see many levels of expertise.  Whether you see a "picture perfect" pose or not, the ultimate goal in yoga practice is to achieve the most ideal state of consciousness, even if for one brief moment.  In this moment you learn to move beyond the mind and become one with the true nature of yourself.

DELICIOUS SMOOTHIE RECIPE: HAPPY GREEN SMOOTHIE!

We have been making this smoothie at live demos with RAVE reviews. I wonder if I can get a photo of Gianna in handstand scorpion drinking a Happy Green Smoothie through a straw? That would be way cool! =)

Ingredients:
20 oz filtered water
2 cups Spinach
½ frozen Banana
1 ripe Pear
1 Tablespoon Bee Pollen
1 pinch Sunfire Salt
2 drops Essential Oil of Lemon
2 teaspoons Coconut Oil
1 Scoop of One World Whey

Place all ingredients except whey in your high speed blender and blend; start on med-low, and increase to high.
Add 1 scoop of Whey at the end and blend on med-low for 5 seconds. Enjoy!

Are you new to raw foods, or could you use a refresher or some new ideas? The PURE Transformation Retreat offers THREE raw food preparation and demonstration classes, as well as classes that explore the connection between what you eat and how you feel.

OFF THE MAT
with Afton Carraway

I practice yoga to...
Heighten awareness of myself.  I learn something new about my body and/or my self every time I practice.

My family/significant others are...

I'm very close with my family back in Orlando.  My Mom and Sis (Julie) both practice yoga regularly.  My Dad loves playing golf and tinkering around with wood - I've found since he has retired (almost 6 years now) he has gotten very good at making boxes.  Julie (sister) is my very best friend ever - you may see her around the studio every now and again as she loves coming to visit me in Austin.  Sometimes I get weirded out about how much I look like and act like my mother.

What I love most about Austin is...

The healthy people.  I was very impressed with how many Austinites were into yoga when I first came to Texas.  The health-consciousness here is so abundant here and makes it easy to live a wholesome lifestyle.

My New Year's Resolutions for 2013 are...

Practice compassion.  Also I need to ride my bike more often.

My top 3 yoga tips to PURE Students are...
1. Trust the process.  It may sound silly, but I can't stress enough that this stuff works if you let it.
2. Don't be attached to doing perfect yoga.  There is no end to the postures and, therefore, no perfect posture!  Just be okay with where you are in your practice and try to find a little more every time you come to class.

3. Listen to your teachers - even if you think they're wrong or crazy, you still may learn something new.

My favorite hydration

method is...

I try to stay hopped up on juice.  I drink plenty of water. Sometimes I think I'm addicted to coconut water....

My favorite healthy meal is...
Apples and avocados!  Individually or combined together in a salad.  I also really love nuts (of any variety).

Things I avoid are...
Negativity, phone conversations (I prefer in-person conversations), bars with music at an unreasonable level.

My favorite yoga clothing is...

I love many yoga clothings....I wear a lot of Tonic.  I wear their gather shorts all of the time and they have great street wear. Other brands I love are Phat Budda, Onzie, and of course - the AFTON SHORT from Hot Drop :)

My favorite yoga gear is...

My water vessels.  I have a Klean Kanteen clad in stickers and an extra tall Starbucks sippy cup with a long straw :)

My favorite yoga posture is...

OMG - I love all of them for so many different reasons and MY FAVORITES ALWAYS CHANGE!  Right now I'm really into Triangle Pose and Leg Breaking Peacock ;)

My favorite yoga tip is...

Listen to the instructions.

My advice to PURE Challengers is...
Take it one day at a time.  Just like a challenging posture in class, you have to break things down into manageable pieces and work slowly with intention.  Don't go for broke in the beginning.  Take your time, move with awareness, and enjoy the ride!
