Eight Limbs of Yoga: Pratyahara and Dharana |
Pratyahara
Pratyahara, the fifth limb of yoga, translates as withdrawl of the senses. It is in this stage that we can consciously choose non-reaction to distractions and stimulants from the outside world. Cultivating detachment from outer sources, allows us to direct our awareness internally. It is part of the reason the heat and humidity, the full room, the bright lights are in place in a Bikram Yoga class: to stimulate and challenge your non-reaction. Bikram tells us over and over, "No one can steal your peace." Your yoga practice can be seen as a reflection of your life. Each posture becomes the opportunity to establish a better mind-body connection. The discipline and attention you give to yourself during practice can be applied to whatever you choose outside of the yoga room.
Dharana
Just as each posture in the Bikram sequence prepares us for the next, Pratyahara creates the setting for the sixth limb of yoga: Dharana, or concentration. Once outside distractions are less important to you, you can make head-way into eliminating the distractions of the "monkey" mind. This is a daunting project! However don't be scared: you have already begun to develop your mind power in the practice of the other limbs of yoga: asana, pranayama, and pratyahara. You must first become self-aware, then, observe your patterns. When you can focus all of your energy and attention on one thing, you are on your way to meditation. Bikram reminds us that "you must first learn that you have a body, then how to use your body." Through regular asana practice you can establish a greater foundation for concentration and develop the ability to achieve Patanjali's great challenge "still the fluctuations of the mind."
Take the opportunity this week both in your practice and in your daily routine to look at yourself objectively. Observe your habits, recognize your desires, and attend specifically to your requirements in order to realize peace resides within you. Even when there are millions of other things going on around you, choose to focus on what you need to do each moment to keep you on your path to better awareness.

NUTRITION IN A WHOLE NEW LIGHT: EAT AND BE HAPPY
Eating more living, raw, plant-based foods makes sense from a physical standpoint; more enzymes, minerals, and nutrients give your body more of what it really needs to function optimally. Better physical health is awesome, and eating more fresh, organic, raw, living foods also boosts your mental and emotional health. Eating more life-giving foods makes you healthier, smarter, and happier.
Have you seen people who include lots of enzyme-rich, fresh foods in their diets? They glow! Their skin is clear, their eyes are bright and lively; from the inside out, they seem to have a glow that sparks light all around them. Have you seen these people? They are beautiful! Most of these people were not raised eating fresh raw foods. They made the conscious choice to eat healthier, and discovered eating raw has some additional awesome benefits.
Raw and living foods (I will use these 2 terms interchangeably) are most often plants or plant-based, organic, as fresh as possible, and eaten in their whole form. Most are eaten uncooked or prepared in a way that enhances their nutrient content.
Simply stated, plants convert sunlight into energy. When you eat more raw foods, you naturally saturate your body with LIGHT and energy and build up your biological bank account with vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids. Filling your biological bank account means you are better prepared to handle whatever comes your way in life. You call on your biological bank account to deal with your state of health, stress, daily demands, even making choices.
I notice as I cleanse and clear old accumulated toxins from my body, I think more clearly. I find making choices easier. I am happier and certainly healthier. Here's the good news: you do not have to have a 100% raw food diet to start feeling healthier and happier. Just make some better choices each day, at each meal. Choose whole, organic foods. Instead of processed snacks, find some new favorites. See what happens when you have fresh green juice every day.
Are you new to raw foods, or could you use a refresher or some new ideas? The PURE Transformation Retreat offers THREE raw food preparation and demonstration classes, as well as classes that explore the connection between what you eat and how you feel.
You will receive whole and raw food meals during your stay at the retreat, and there will be a juice happy hour and a raw ice cream social. Check out the website for more info and be sure to register before February 24th to catch early bird pricing.
