PRANAYAMA Bikram explains to us that there are three parts to a TRUE Hatha Yoga Practice: 1. Maintaining stillness during the postures. 2. Mindful breathing throughout the practice. 3. Regular use of Savasana, or Dead Body Pose. Without all three parts, you may receive some benefit from yoga similar to calisthenics because you are exercising, but you will never receive 100 yoga benefit.
Practicing Asanas (postures) and Pranayama (breath control) go hand in hand. It takes discipline, concentration, and determination to learn how to breathe normally while maintaining proper form. There are four different kinds of breathing techniques that we learn in Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class.
Standing Deep Breathing This technique begins the class. As if the arm and head movement, are not confusing enough, you are asked to compress your throat as air passes in and out: you probably never knew that a mindless, repetitive act could be SO complex! It feels strange at first because your lungs are NOT used to maximum expansion. It is perfectly normal to feel that you cannot inhale or exhale for 6 counts. The good news is, your lungs are elastic and each day you will find your breath becomes deeper and fuller. You learn daily to control the breath and sustain your inhales and exhales rather than gasp. This breathing exercise stimulates circulation waking up the muscles and getting them ready for action.
Normal Breathing This is our constant challenge--to learn how to keep our breath continuous, no matter what we are experiencing. Keep in mind your breathing pattern will be different than the person next to you. Whatever occurs naturally in your practice is what you should do. Breathing in and out of the nose while moving in and out of Asanas will create harmony in the body and mind.
80/20 Breathing In some Asanas, especially deeper backbends, retaining 80 percent of the breath creates pneumatic pressure inside your lungs. This internal compression helps to stabilize your torso--specifically the spinal area--as you bend, so that the body does not completely relax. To do this, before starting the posture, inhale fully--to whatever 100 percent is for you--and as you maintain the posture, you allow only roughly 20 percent of the air to escape as you exhale. Inhale only that same small percentage of your lung capacity back in to complete the cycle. When practicing 80/20 breathing you can integrate many things at once: you create internal support for the movement of the body with the deliberate control of your breath.
Kapalibati Breathing Blowing in Firm Pose is an exhalation breath only. Each forceful exhale (like you are blowing out a candle in front of you) improves digestion, circulation, and increases lung capacity. You generate prana (life force) and push out every ounce of carbon dioxide remaining in your lungs, replacing it with life-giving oxygen to fuel you for the rest of your day.
The more mindful you are of your breath, the more control you have of your mind and body. Remember your daily yoga practice provides you with a time in your day that you can become more conscious about your patterns, your habits, and how to improve yourself to make you more effective in whatever you do.

HEALTHY EATING SIMPLIFIED Do you think eating healthy is expensive and time consuming? It doesn't have to be. Here are some great ideas that are easy and affordable. Healthy Eating Staples: Coconut Oil - If you cook any of your food (sauté, bake, sear, etc), use coconut oil. Coconut oil does not go rancid when cooked at high heat like other oils do. Buy organic, extra virgin or cold pressed and try a few different brands to find the flavor you enjoy best. Some coconut oils are sweeter, some more neutral in flavor. Olive Oil & Sesame Oil - Use on salads and dishes that have already been prepared. Olive and sesame oils are more delicate and become toxic to the liver when cooked. Avocado - Awesome on salads and great with your snacks. Cube an avocado, mix with organic salsa and eat with Chipotle Chia Crackers - delicious! Apple Cider Vinegar - While most vinegars create imbalance in your body, apple cider vinegar (ACV) helps restore balance to your digestive system. ACV and olive or sesame oil combine with high quality salt and pepper to make a delicious simple salad dressing. Here is a video showing you how to make fun and easy satisfying salads. Organic Veggies - Keep these veggies on hand for salads and juicing: lettuce mix, celery, parsley, lemon, ginger. Organic Apples and Pears - or in-season fruit makes a great snack. Try this: melt ˝ to 1 Tbsp coconut oil, mix in chopped apple or pear, ˝ tsp cinnamon, a dash of salt and some chopped Awesome Almonds, Walnut Inspiration or Almond Courage. You just made a delicious breakfast or snack! Bulk Staples - Organic quinoa, lentils, flax seeds. - Soak quinoa or lentils in water overnight to neutralize enzyme inhibitors and enhance digestion. Steam quinoa with carrots and celery. Serve with olive oil or coconut oil, salt & pepper.
- Drain lentils and set on your counter in a colander. Rinse and drain twice a day for 2 days until they sprout tails. Steam 10 minutes and enjoy with olive or sesame oil, salt & pepper. Steamed lentils or quinoa are also delicious in your salad.
- Grind flax seed or purchase ground flax seed and sprinkle on your salads or lentils for an added boost of essential fatty acids and fiber.
Check out your neighborhood HEB. Many HEB stores carry a nice selection of organic fruits and vegetables at great prices. Look for the healthy living section, too. They usually have organic quinoa, flax seeds, chia seeds, and lentils in bulk. They also have natural, non-toxic body products like shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, etc. at lower prices. |
I practice yoga to...
stay happy. Yoga has helped me to combat medical depression and to combat general craziness (although the craziness creeps up now and again :-).
My family/significant others are...
You guys have probably hear me talk about my mom and dad in class. They both teach Bikram in San Antonio (in their 60s!) and they continue to inspire me every day. I am so grateful to them for bringing me into this amazing practice (and world!).
What I love most about Austin is...
it's ability to produce positively supreme people watching!
My New Year's Resolutions for 2013 are...
1. practice self love every day 2. do a sitting meditation every day 3. spread as much love as I possibly can!
My top 3 yoga tips to PURE Students are...
1. Don't take yourself too seriously 2. Learn to meditate outside of class 3. Have fun!!!!!!!
My favorite hydration
method is...
COCONUT WATER!!!!! Endura (an electrolyte supplement by metagenics) during the summer :-)
My favorite healthy meal is...
Right now I'm experimenting with a lot of raw recipes as my roommate has recently gone raw. My favorite salad right now is:
- dino kale
- lentils (not raw but delicious!)
- carrots
- cucumbers
- pumpkin seeds
dressing:
- avocado
- a little agave
- siracha
YUM!
Things I avoid are...
Nothing. If I'm craving something I think it's important to have a little of it so I don't eat more of it later! This being said, I generally stay away from dairy, gluten, and refined sugar. Chocolate doesn't count...
My favorite yoga clothing is...
Tonic: for it's quality Lululemon: WONDERUNDERS! Onzie: for it's affordability Shakti: it's just a classic
My favorite yoga gear is...
I don't really use gear...
My favorite yoga posture is...
Savasana! No seriously...
My favorite yoga tip is...
to become aware of the relationship between your feet and the floor. The standing postures can have a tremendous amount of grounding power (physically and emotionally). If you pay attention to the way your feet touch the ground (body weight placement, non-gripping of the toes, and simply the way the ground feels beneath your feet) it helps you to become more aware of your entire body's alignment.
My advice to PURE Challengers is... Don't kill yourself just to finish the challenge. If you have to do 2 weeks of doubles just to finish and you work full time and you have kids etc, etc, give yourself a break!
