YOGA PHILOSOPHY
The Eight Limbs of Yoga 
ASANA

The third limb is ASANA, the postures practiced in yoga class.  The practice of asana, which means "staying" or "abiding" in Sanskrit, is used as a tool to calm the mind and move into awareness of one's body. The challenge of poses offers us the opportunity to explore and control all aspects of our emotions, concentration, will-power, faith, determination, and strength between the physical and the mental body.  Asana becomes a way of exploring our mental attitudes and strengthening our will as we learn to create balance between our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual experience while in class.  The discipline of a routine asana practice, allow us daily healing and improvement in all areas of our lives.  The physicality of the yoga postures becomes a vehicle to expand the consciousness that pervades our every aspect of our body. Bikram reminds us to be grateful and patient when you feel yourself move your physical body--and yes, it might hurt a little bit because you have not explored this area before.   Each day your threshold for experience should recede and you'll be able to go further. Take time this week to pay attention to how to maintain this threshold (maximum expression of the posture) and breathe normal there.  This will help you make progress in all of your asanas and allow you to go deeper into your daily practice.

1.Listen in class. Don't assume you know what's next - keep your ears open and allow yourself to experience something new.

2. Take classes from a variety of teachers -- do not check the schedule before you decide which class to take. The more open you are to new teachers, the more you'll learn about yoga, your practice and yourself.

3. Make your savasanas still and as long as possible -- it makes all the difference.

My advice to PURE Challengers is...

Think of the Challenge (90in90, 60in60, 30in30, etc) as a single, 90min class -- have no expectations, do the best you can, give it all you've got AND take breaks if you need to. Be proud of yourself for going for it and always remember that you're doing it for yourself.
