Thank you all for your patience as we embrace PURE Bikram Yoga North Austin (formerly Yogagroove). It's official, starting NOW, your memberships will be good at all FIVE studio locations! Be adventurous. Seek out new teachers, meet new yoga friends, try new class times. The world is your oyster...well, at least the Bikram world in Austin, Tx is.
The community we create in our yoga practice is a special one. We are a group of people consciously working to improve our lives, and those surrounding us, through better physical and mental health. We practice because we know it works. The experience is enough for us to know and commit to yoga, but it isn't enough for everyone or everything. In our society, we have to be able to prove our beliefs and convictions. PURE Action is working to do just that. Wondering where your Challenge donations are going? Straight to PURE Action's research endeavors. Read on to hear more about what they are studying and mark your calendar to attend Dr. Hunter's presentation this weekend! You'll have the opportunity to get a good look at some of the data and ask any questions you may have about her research.
This Sunday we continue our "Sunday Talks" series with

YOUR DONATIONS AT WORK!

Much speculation has arisen over the years about the intensity and/or caloric expenditure of hot or Bikram yoga and several websites have posted estimations ranging from 500 to 1,000 calories per class. However, no published studies have addressed this topic. Perhaps these online estimations are based on heart rate responses measured via heart rate monitors, but this isn't the best technique given the variable relationship between heart rate and caloric expenditure. A better method is indirect calorimetry, a technique used to determine the intensity of various forms of physical activity by measuring oxygen consumption, which is more indicative of caloric expenditure than heart rate responses.
The caloric expenditure study at Colorado State University is measuring oxygen consumption using an Oxycon Mobile metabolic system (below). In a heated, temperature controlled environmental chamber, study participants perform the 26 Bikram yoga postures while listening to Bikram's instructional CD.

This is the first study which will provide a more accurate determination of the caloric expenditure of Bikram yoga and we're looking forward to seeing the results in the spring! In addition to oxygen consumption, other study measurements include sweat loss, body core temperature, perceived exertion, and the respiratory exchange ratio, a ratio of carbon dioxide to oxygen which provides a gage of the proportional carbohydrate and fat utilization during the yoga session. We anticipate study publication later this year. For more information, please check our website www.PUREaction.org for study updates.
Come hear Dr. Stacy Hunter present her research this Sunday, January 20th at 7:30pm in the Downtown studio.

Maca Magic: Increase Your Energy and Strength, Heal Your Hormones, Improve Your Libido - Naturally!
Maca's Ancient Roots Maca is an ancient root with ancient roots. It is a plant native to the high Andean Mountains of Peru and Bolivia. Evidence of its cultivation dates back to 1600 BC when warriors took maca before entering into battle to make themfiercely strong.
Maca grows at altitudes of 9,000 - 14,000 feet above sea level, making it the highest-altitude crop on earth. It endures and thrives in extreme ecological conditions. It grows in barren, treeless, inhospitable regions with intense sunlight during the day and whipping winds at night. In one evening from sundown to darkness, temperatures can drop from 64 degrees to 14. Brrrrr!
Supreme Adaptogen These unique growing conditions give you an idea of maca's benefits in your body. Two words: supreme adaptogen.
An adaptogen is something that helps your body adapt to stress. Maca is a supreme adaptogen helping you stand strong in the midst of whatever stress surrounds you and helping you adapt with ease.
Maca supports your endocrine system, especially your adrenals and thyroid, which makes it a great adjunct to Bikram yoga. Your endocrine system secretes hormones, and since maca supports your endocrine system it also helps balance hormones - especially in women.
That's right ladies, maca helps reduce symptoms of PMS and 'The Change'. This alone is a great reason to consume maca. For consistent results in balancing your endocrine system, boosting your energy and healing your adrenals and thyroid, we recommend having one to two tablespoons of maca per day.
Andean Aphrodisiac Remember the ancient warriors who took maca before entering battle to make them fiercely strong? Those same warriors were forbidden to consume maca after cities were conquered to protect the city's women from the excessive sexual desires of the men. Here's the good news: maca works as an equally effective aphrodisiac for both men and women.
How Do You Use Maca? Maca is a FOOD! Add maca to your favorite smoothies, salad dressings, or sweet treats. Maca is especially delicious when combined with chocolate! I love adding maca to my favorite Chocolate Maca Cherry Smoothie. I am happy to share the recipe with you - click here to email me your request; just type Chocolate Maca Cherry Smoothie in the subject line and I will email you my recipe FREE.
Are All Macas The Same? Of course not! Our favorite maca comes from Healthforce Nutritionals. They understand that maca is a cruciferous vegetable and requires digestive support. Raw cruciferous veggies do not typically digest well. They often cause gas and bloating. Healthforce is Genius because they add prebiotics, probiotics, enzymes, and ginger to this formula. All of these components help you easily digest the maca and whatever you eat it with. Brilliant! Adding vanilla and ginger to this formula also enhances the flavor and adds a nice warmth that is especially delicious in smoothies and raw desserts.
Macaforce Vanilla Spice wins the most effective and best tasting maca award in my book! It tastes great, digests well, increases your energy and strength, balances your hormones and improves your libido; I will just call it the Superfood Party Food of the Year!
